Fallen Angel

Ashley and the Beasts

The creature pried its way into the room, hunched over, drool seeping from its teeth. One of its claws pierced the sheets of my bed, the other, my wall. I noticed a small figure beginning to emerge from the shoulder of the figure, more human than anything I’ve seen in the past few minutes, but the closer I looked, the more I realized it was another supernatural entity. As it began to emerge from the shadows of the beast, I made out some faint features: it was dressed similar to what was now Andy--the black pants, black boots, drenched head to toe in black markings. The difference was he was more Western. He had a large star on his belt, a bandana tied around his neck, a cowboy hat, and large sunglasses--all black. His markings were like a tiger, down his cheeks and neck, some across his naked chest, more sculpted on his arms.

“How do you like my beasts?” he said, taking a stand, rope tied around the beast’s neck in his hand.

I was silent as he continued to talk.

“Stole ‘em from down below, if you catch my drift.” he said hopping off the shoulder of the monster. He slowly approached me, removing his shades. Beneath all the black markings, he was pale, except for his eyes that were encrusted in heavy, black circles. His eyes were terrifying as they glowed a deep red. I peeked behind the man at the beast breathing heavily then back at him. I had backed up against the wall, no where to go. He rested his forearm on the wall just above my head as he looked down at me. “My Name’s Ashley by the way… and My, what a dame you are.” he grinned, dragging his hand down my back, bringing me close to him. “I just might have to keep you.” His fingers peeked their way into my jeans, eager to work their way down.

Just then, I took the pocket knife I had retrieved and drove it between his ribs. His hands retreated as he screamed in pain. I took the opportunity to push him away and bolted down the stairs. I barely made it out the door when I was violently knocked down. Quickly, I tried to recover but when I had gotten to my hands and knees, I felt a large boot slam itself on my back.

“That was a dirty trick.” Ashley said, kicking me over to my back. I stared up at the sky. Andy was putting up his all against one of the monsters, barely holding on. At the corner of my eye, I saw birds, frozen in the sky, the trees, as still as a painting, the streets as lifeless as death itself. My eyes rolled over to Ashley. There was a thread of blood at the corner of his mouth. I looked to where I had punctured his rib; his skin was sealing itself and within a matter of seconds, it was as if I hadn’t stabbed him at all.
“Lucky for you,” He positioned himself over my body. “I like my women feisty.” I couldn’t move. Everytime I tried, my entire midsection felt like it was on fire, especially my lungs. Every sharp breath was a piercing one. It felt like the air was broken glass. Ashley tore part of my shirt, exposing my bra. He kissed my breast softly.

“S-stop.” I whispered.

“You like that?” He said brushing my straps down my shoulders. He licked the center of my chest, working his way up to my neck. Just as he unbutton my pants, there wa a loud crash. Both of us looked. The beasts were down, their bodies seeming to evaporate into a black mist.

Ashley frowned. “Seems as though we’ll have to continue some other time.” He smiled slightly, staring down Andy, who glared right back at him. Ashley quickly shoved his hand up my bra, making sure not to lose eye contact. I let out a faint, raspy scream as I tried to fidget, but I was restrained by an overwhelming sensation of pain. Andy cringed and dashed toward Ashley on one quick step, but Ashley laughed and easily avoided his attack, hopping into a rooftop. Andy made an unexpected leap toward Ashley landing a clean punch to his jaw. Ashley flew to the ground, and by the time he looked up, Andy was holding a sword to his neck.

“Don’t touch her.”

“I could have sworn you were barely standing on your feel just a moment ago.” Ashley crossed his eyes. “Where did this sudden burst of energy come from?”

Andy remained silent.

“Oh don’t tell me... “ Ashley started to laugh hysterically. “Is it the girl?” In the blink of an eye, Ashley placed his hands beside his head, tucked his knees in, and drove both his heels into Andy’s stomach-- all in one swift move, backflipping and landing almost perfectly on his feet. “You’ve got to be joking.” He walked over to Andy who was spread out on the grass, took his heel, and drove it into Andy’s arm. I heard the sound of cracking bone as Andy belted out in agony.

I felt a sudden burst of energy and forced myself up on my feet. “Leave.. him… ALONE!” I screamed as a sudden a ray of white light emitted from my body in a gust of wind, and my mind went blank. I felt like I was moving in slow motion. I hit ashley in the nose. He landed on the ground. I straddled him, hitting him in the face over and over again. He landed a punch in my stomach pushing me off. I punched him in the chest, then the throat. I grabbed his neck and kneed him in the face. Ashley took to the air. I followed. I laced my hands together and swung at his neck, driving him back to the ground. I thought nothing. I felt nothing. I just acted.

It was then, Ashley realized he was not going to win. He took one last blow and used the dust as a screen to disappear into the night. Everything was calm. Everything was quiet. I was able to regain my senses, and just as I did, the white light disappeared with my strength, and I began to fall backwards. But I was caught by a pair of arms. Andy? I was more drained of energy than I was before. I couldn't speak. I couldn't breath. I could barely see. My head was laid gently on the grass. I felt his lips on mine. I didn’t move. I couldn’t. I felt a familiar coolness take over my body replacing the pain that I felt. Everything felt like it was drifting away, like in a dream.

When I opened my eyes, I saw a stained glass window--Jesus with his arms spread on a cross. Slowly, I sat up. A church? There was dust on the chairs and down the aisle, webs dangling from every corner. It looked as though no one had been here for a while. I looked toward the door that was slightly cracked open; it was dark outside. My eyes shifted to an orange glow: candles; they were scattered across a long table. Just below the table was a body, heavily breathing with a rag draped over the face. I quietly crawled over to the body, careful not to make a sound.

“Andy?” I whispered finally.

He said nothing.

I reached for the rag and removed it from his face. He was sleeping. I looked at his clothes, drenched in blood. Slowly, I lifted up his shirt, careful not to wake him, and placed the rag on a cut, wiping away the excess blood. I didn’t question how we got there or why. I didn’t deny anything else. Part of me stopped caring, the other was just happy to be alive. I took the bucket of water that sat beside him and cleaned his cuts with the rag. After I had gotten most of it, I paused and looked over his face. He was calm, almost innocent. I brushed some of his damp hair out of his face before soaking the rag once more. He had a fairly deep set of scratches on his lower abdomen. I gently placed the rag in the cuts and began to dab the blood away.

“I got some down below too, if you’re interested.” His voice startled me and I jumped back.

“What?” I threw the rag down and scooted away. I looked down at my clothes, remembering that Ashley had ripped my shirt. Half my bra was exposed from the shirt and my pants were still unbuttoned. I pulled my arms and legs and then covered my face thinking back to what I was doing.

“No need to stop now.” He grinned as he began to sit up. “I don’t mind. In fact, I insist.” he laughed just before being silenced by some pain.

“Are you okay?” I asked moving back toward him.

“I’m fine.” He said, holding his stomach.

“Good.” I took my fist and hit him on the head.

“Ow!” What the hell was that for!?” he shouted at me.

“For being an idiot and a pervert!” I said, hitting him again.

“Quit it!” he said catching my wrist. I yanked my arm away and tried to hit him again. “Stop! That hurts!” He said, grabbing a hold of both my arms. I tried to free myself, but then he tumbled over me, arms pinned to the ground. “Gotcha!” He flinched and grabbed his side, collapsing on me.

“Get off!” I felt my face growing red.

“I.. can’t… I used my power.. to heal you..didn’t save much for... myself.. just my arm.”

I thought back to the crunching sound of his arm underneath Ashley's boot then the kiss and the coolness that flooded my body like water. I stopped struggling. “... Why would you do that..?”

He sighed. “You kinda saved my ass back there… God only knows how… but you did.. and…” he paused. “I’m not a man who likes to be in debt.”

“Well, you can’t at least roll off?” My clothes were doing little to cover me and it made me a little anxious and uncomfortable.

“Don’t wanna. Too sleepy.”

“Andy!”

“Ooh, scream my name again.” He teased.

“Shut up!”

“I’m not the one yelling..”

“Andy..!” I winned.

He was silent.

I took a deep breath then just laid there underneath him in the silence. His head rested on my chest--bra exposed and all. One of his legs were between mine, the other on the outside. I could feel my pants halfway down my hips. His arms were angled slightly, extending above my head. To close for comfort. I tried to get my mind off of it. I thought back to before all this happened. We were cleaning the yard. We argued most of the time I was there. He’s such an Ass, I thought. But at the same time, he isn’t so bad. When I fell from the latter, he moved from the roof to the ground below me in a matter of a second. He caught me. How? “Andy?” I called. He answered with a muffled sound. “What.. are you, exactly..?”

“Long story.. in one word.. Fallen.”

I echoed him.

“An angel who fell from grace.” he paused. “Story isn’t worth the time. Goodnight.” The silence didn’t budge this time. I heard rain beginning to fall outside. Please not thunder.. I prayed.

Time passed as we laid there in the candle-lit room. The orange glow flickered, shadows shaking on the walls of the alter. Rain echoed off the roof. Just then, a loud clash of thunder struck and the whole room lit up in white before fading away.

I jumped, wrapping my arms around Andy, clutching his shirt in both my hands.

“What’s wrong..?” He groaned.

“N-nothing.”

“You keep moving.” he complained.

I felt him about to roll over, but with another clash of lightning, my grip tightened on his shirt. “No!” My arms were shaking; I tried to make them stop but couldn’t.

“...You scared..?”

“N-no.” I was still shaking.

“Then why is your heart beating really fast?” When I didn’t say anything, he sighed and shifted his body to my side, pulling me close. My head rested on his arm that held me close to his chest. He stroked my hair with his other arm. Both of my arms were tucked close to my chest, and one leg was angled between his. “You’re such a pain.” he whispered. I said nothing, just laid there. Another wave of thunder followed by lightning echoed and lit up the room again. I wasn’t scared this time.

Part of me wondered about my house.. My mom.. My job.. the other part of me worried about Andy.. his parents.. his life.. his past.. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I wondered about him. A Fallen… Where had he come from? What did he do? Why is he here? I thought back to the beasts and to Ashley. I thought about the white light. What was that? That strength, where did it come from? I looked up at Andy, this time, he was fast asleep again. I moved closer to his chest… ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum. He has a heart beat… I listened, slipping away in thought, and it was these thoughts that carried me back to sleep.

While half asleep, I heard myself mutter Andy’s name. “Thank… you… “ I mumbled. I felt him pull me close again. There, we fell asleep, in eachothers arms, under the soft light of a dozen candles in an abandon church who knows where. It’s been forever since someone held me the way he did. I just hoped that this forever-- the forever I was hoping for as I laid in his arms, would be much longer.
