A Demonic Love

The Catholic School Girl Rebel

Andy felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest as he stood there, his eyes trained on the wooden door that remained closed before him. Cal had walked him back to his quarter building, bidding him goodbye out front but even as he stood there Andy couldn’t pluck up the courage to open his own front door. It was still early and Lily could still be asleep, but what if she wasn’t? What would he say? What was he supposed to do? Fuck-what was wrong with him? He was acting like a mere human and that wasn’t okay, at least it used to not be okay. Sighing heavily, Andy reached out a shaking hand and grasped the knob of his front door and took in a deep breath as he turned the handle and then pushed.

The site that he was met with made him smile and he chuckled lowly as Andy just stood there in the doorway, silently watching Lily. She was up and she was dancing around his apartment, shaking her hips slowly as Lily seemed to be oblivious to his presence and Andy noticed that she had the iPod plugged into her ears which explained the lack of noise. Obviously she had yet to see him as she continued to dance around and strum an invisible guitar and Andy found himself mesmerized by her as he watched.

She seemed so free-like she didn’t have a care in the world in that moment, but Andy knew that that wasn’t really true. No, something had gotten to this lively girl to make her feel so sad that she had no choice but to hurt herself. She hadn’t told him what had happened in her life to bring it all coming down and Andy was curious about it, but he was afraid that asking would be rude. He cleared his throat loudly and laughed, doubling over, as Lily jumped at the noise and she whipped around, her eyes wide as she just stood there and looked at him. Blushing, Lily removed one of the ear buds and looked down at the ground, obviously embarrassed at being caught in the act.

“Uh-how long have you been standing there?” She asked, shuffling her feet and avoiding his eyes as Andy just smirked and moved to sit down on the empty couch, her blanket crumpled up on one end and so he sat at the opposite end.

“Long enough. How long have you been awake for?” He asked as Andy patted the leather next to him, beckoning her to join him and he smirked even wider as Lily only rolled her eyes and dragged her feet as she moved to sit next to him on the couch.

“Long enough-“ She smirked at him as Lily wound the cord to the ear buds around the iPod and then bent down to set it on the table. Andy just stared at her for a minute, unsure of how he should feel about her response. The Demon in him was irritated, but the human in him felt a warmth grow in his heart as he looked over at this feisty girl sitting next to him.

“Smart ass…” Andy mumbled as he looked to Lily and noticed that she was smiling brightly at him-adorable looking with her white blonde hair tucked behind her ears. God, her smile was infectious and Andy realized that his own lips had risen into a gentle smile as he took her in and she seemed to smile even wider at him as they sat there.

“Takes one to know one. So-where did you go bright and early this morning?” Lily joked as she reached down and placed her left hand over her right wrist and rubbed gently. Andy noticed this and his heart sunk as he took in her scars and wounds that she had inflicted upon herself.

“I went to go talk to my friend Cal. He’s a Record Demon and I was hoping he would know a way to get you home. He’s looking in to it.” Andy said as Lily only nodded and looked around her. His apartment was so dark with the black walls and dark furniture and Lily found herself grow sad as she remembered her bedroom back home.

“Has something upset you?” Andy asked, moving so that his legs were tucked beneath him and he leaned forward and he noticed that Lily was smiling softly, her eyes glazing over as if she was lost in a distant memory.

“N-no…” She was lying, it was written all over her face and Andy had to fight himself as he longed to reach out and touch her.

“Lily…please tell me what’s wrong.” He pleaded and watched as she looked up at him from her lap, her eyes watery as Lily inhaled deeply and then spoke.

“I just miss being home. I’m angry at myself for being this way and I-I know that my mother is really disappointed in me with how I died…” She was crying softly now, her tears trailing down her cheeks slowly as Andy just looked at her.

“Why? Why is the way you died such a bad thing for your religion?” Andy asked the question without even thinking and he suddenly regretted it as Lily just shut her eyes tightly, but her tears were still leaking out.

“When you are Catholic you are supposed to be devoted to God completely and trust in him that any pain or anguish you feel he will take care of for you. Suicide is seen as taking your own life and destiny into your own hands and they look at that as an affront to God-if he wanted me to die then he would have chosen a different time and place for me to do so…according to my church at least.” Lily said this all in a one breath, almost as if it caused her physical pain to tell him all of this.

“But you’re human…being human means having free will over what you want for your life…” Andy said and he watched as Lily just smiled gently and looked at him. Her eyes were haunting as they looked at him and Andy felt a shiver run up his spine.

“Tell that to the people who live by their religion. Being Catholic is one of the hardest things about being human…” Lily laughed lightly, her fingers reaching for a piece of her long blonde hair and she began to twist the strands around her fingers nervously.

They stayed like that for most of the day, Andy listening intently to Lily as she explained what it was to be Catholic, which that turned in to her then explaining to him the differences between all of the religions that humans adopted. Lily found it strange to explain this to someone, who looked human, but was obviously lacking in human emotion and reaction. She had cried and Andy watched her cry and it almost seemed like he was fighting an internal battle with himself. She wished that he would just reach out and hug her, but she knew that that was something that was a foreign concept to him and she was trying to keep that in mind.

“I remember the nuns at the elementary school I went to hated me…even as a little kid I was always getting into trouble. Thankfully my mother decided to send me to a normal high school…otherwise the nuns probably would have killed me themselves.” Lily laughed as Andy smiled at her and thought back to his own time in school. The first few years had been about learning basic things like their history and the duties for each sector. It wasn’t until he got older that Andy saw how hard it was being a Torture Demon compared to anything else.

“What is high school like?” Andy asked, his eyes curious and bright.

“Miserable. I mean it can be fun learning about certain things, but for people like me it’s nothing but a chance for other people to ridicule and pick at you…” Lily’s voice sounded small and sad as she reached down and rubbed at her wrist gently.

“What did you do that with? I mean it must’ve hurt…how were you able to do that to yourself?” It had been something that Andy had wanted to know ever since first seeing her scars and he hoped that he hadn’t just ruined everything between the two of them.

“Um-I broke apart a razor that I use for shaving and I kept it hidden in my makeup case at home…I-I guess I just did it and didn’t think about the pain. Actually the pain helped me feel like I was able to feel anything at all…” She was sad and suddenly Andy reached out, taking one of her small hands in his and his skin was strangely warm and comforting.

“You-you can’t feel anything?” Andy asked, slightly confused as he just looked down at their clasped hands and he smiled. Her skin was soft against his-he had grown used to the scalely skin of the Demons around him and this was a pleasant change.

“It’s not that I can’t feel anything I-I’ve just been made to feel like my feelings don’t matter in my own life. My opinions don’t matter…they’ve never mattered.” Her eyes were welling again, the tears threatening to fall as Lily looked down at her lap and noticed that Andy’s hand still held on to hers.

“Well I think your opinions matter.” He said simply and Lily chuckled as she looked up at him. His eyes were so soft and sincere looking, the blue of them delving in to her soul as he looked at her through his bangs.

“Thanks…I wish someone felt that way when I was alive.” Lily laughed, her thumb running slowly against his skin and she smirked as Andy shivered and looked down at their hands.

“I-I can’t imagine someone being so cruel to you Lily. You’re so sweet and innocent…” She laughed at that and Andy felt himself blush. He had never spoken to someone like that before and he was nervous at her reaction. He had no idea what he was doing and he wasn’t even sure if how he was acting was appropriate to how a guy should be around a girl.

“My mother would disagree with you on that. I swear sometimes my mother thought I was the devil’s spawn.” It was Andy’s turn to laugh, his whole body shook as Lily just sat there. Her eyes were wide as she took him in, watching him chuckle until finally he was silent and they were both just looking at one another.

“Sor-sorry. Um, why did she say that about you?” Andy asked, his eyes avoiding hers as he still continued to chuckle to himself. Lily could never be a child of Satan-she was too pure and innocent to ever be related to someone so purely evil and cruel. Andy however…

“Because of the way I dress and the music I listen too…I’m not the good little Catholic School girl that she wishes I was.” Lily smirked at this, her full lips looking soft and Andy felt an urge come up with in him. He wasn’t sure how he was supposed to do it, but he desperately wanted to place his lips against hers, to feel her smile against him.

Andy felt himself leaning in closer, their clasped hands tightening as Lily looked at him, her eyes wide but she was also leaning towards him. He could feel her breath on his lips as Andy felt his eyes closing, the space between them becoming smaller and smaller. Sadly there was a knock at the door and Andy jumped away from her as Lily sat back against the blanket and pillow that she had used the night before. Andy grumbled as he moved to get up, dropping her hand to her lap and Lily watched as he ran a hand through his hair in frustration and looked through the peephole.

“Shit…” His voice was a growl as Andy turned back towards Lily, his eyes frantic and panic laced his features as he moved towards her. He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her up off the couch as he pushed her towards a back hall.

“What’s going on?” Lily asked quietly, fear lacing her stomach as Andy led her back towards a small room and as he opened the door she felt her face go numb. The room was tiny, the walls lined with all sorts of weapons and she felt frightened as Andy pushed her inside, keeping the light off as he looked at her, his blue eyes sad and scared.

“They’re here…the High Council. Stay in here and stay quiet…my life and your afterlife depend on it.” He said in a hushed tone as Andy gave her a small smile and then closed the door, engulfing her in darkness.

Lily heard muffled voices, and as she stood there, her heartbeat the only sound her small hide out, Lily felt something in her blossom. Hope…and a small crush on her new savior.
