A Demonic Love

Learning The Basics

Lily bit down on her lower lip as she considered Andy’s request and she found that she couldn’t meet his gaze as memories and thoughts flooded her mind. How could she teach him to be something that she had failed so miserably at? At least that’s how she had been made to feel by almost everyone in her life-like the ultimate failure who could never do anything right…every day of her life from the time she was thirteen until her death a day ago.

Her mother always seemed disappointed in Lily’s choices in life, especially in the way that she dressed and the music she listened to and that resulted in Lily having no other way of dealing with her emotions other than to take it out on her own skin. It had been her mother who had pushed her over the edge that very last night of her life, over some stupid grade that Lily had gotten in gym for not participating. Looking over at Andy, Lily knew that she had to help him.

“What exactly do you need to know about being human?” Lily asked, smiling softly as Andy bit down on his lip ring in thought. God he was so hot when he did that and Lily felt a blush creep up her neck as she looked away from him.

“Well- I really like this music stuff that I keep hearing. Can we start there?” He was so cute as he asked her, his eyes were big and bright as he looked over at her through his bangs. Lily felt her heart melt as she sat there and looked at him, her light colored eyes taking him in as he just continued to look at her.

“Uh-well the music that’s on this iPod is all rock music. Rancid, The Damned, AFI-“ She looked at him then. Andy had his elbows resting on top of his bent knees and his chin was resting gently against the palms of his hands as he smiled over at her. His eyebrows were raised slightly, his blue eyes curious as Lily only looked at him and smirked.

“How do these humans make the noise?” His voice was sincere as he asked this and Lily tried really hard not to laugh at him, but a few giggles escaped her lips as she looked at him. This was so awkward-everyone knew what music was where she was from and so Lily was struggling for a way to explain things to Andy so that he would understand.

“They’re called bands Andy-the humans that make music are called bands. They play instruments…guitar, bass, drums and piano-although there are lots of different instruments that people play, but those aren’t usually used in rock music.” Lily grabbed for the iPod, which was sitting in between them on the couch and she held it in her small hands. She looked down at it, thinking to herself as she tried to figure out a way of explaining things more clearly.

“How can one tell the difference? What instrument makes which noise?” It was such a simple question, but Lily found herself stumped as she sat there, her bottom lip sticking out and she noticed that Andy was smirking over at her, his eyes focused on her lips.

As she sat there, the iPod in her hands, suddenly Lily got an idea and she moved to get up. Andy followed her with his eyes, wary of what she had planned and he remained seated as Lily disappeared into his kitchen and suddenly the apartment was filled with banging noises as she opened and closed his cabinet doors. Lily was a strange human-she was bubbly and seemed intelligent, but Andy still didn’t understand why she hurt herself the way that she did. His thoughts were interrupted by Lily, who was finished in the kitchen and had taken a seat on the couch once again. She had placed a large bowl on the table in front of them and then she took what she had called ‘buds’ and placed those in the bowl. Picking up the iPod, Lily crossed her fingers as she pressed play and suddenly the entire room was filled with music.

“Yes! Okay, so do you hear that?” She jumped in her seat triumphantly and Andy just leaned in, straining to hear the faint wailing sound that was coming from the bowl.

“Yeah…yeah I do. What instrument is that?” He asked, his head coming back up as Andy looked to Lily and smiled brightly.

“That’s the guitar. Most bands have two guitar players, one lead and one rhythm. Here…” She stuck her tongue out as she spun her fingers around and soon the sounds changed and Andy could hear a loud thumping coming from the bowl.

“What is that? It’s shaking the table…” He laughed as Lily only smiled and turned the volume down slightly.

“Bass. Most bass players help to keep the beat along with the drummer. Bands usually only have one bass player.” Lily said as she turned to the player once again, choosing a different song. Andy could only nod as he held out his hand and began ticking off his fingers.

“Two guitar players, one bass player…what is that? It sounds like someone hitting something against a wall…” The sound was low and fast and every once in a while there was a soft tinkling noise and Andy found himself nodding his head to the beat.

“Drums. All bands have to have a drummer-they set the frame work for everything and help everyone else keep time.” Lily smiled as Andy reached for the player and spun the dial until finally a slow song came on. Lily knew this song and she smiled as she sang a long softly.

I saw a star beneath the stairs glowing through the melting walls.
Who will be the first to begin their fall?
Or will we become one?
Am I the star beneath the stairs?
Am I a ghost upon the stage?
Am I your anything?

“Wha-what are you doing?” Andy was looking at her strangely and Lily only snapped her mouth shut as she realized what she actually was doing. Singing-she never sang in front of people…ever.

“I-uh-well all bands have to have a singer…” She held her hands up to her mouth, the blush on her cheeks flaming as Lily tried to hold back her tears.

“Oh. Well is there anything else to this music?” Andy asked, feeling something in his gut-affection. No, Demons weren’t ever affectionate with one another and Andy wouldn’t know the first thing about being affectionate towards someone, especially a human.

“Not really…” Lily still held her hand over her mouth as she spoke and all Andy could do was cock his head to one side and look at her.

“So that’s it? All you humans do is kill one another and listen to music?” He asked and Lily laughed so loudly that she hiccuped and her eyes got wide as she smiled over at him.

“No…we go to concerts to listen to music and we dance. We watch movies and read books and some of us write and hang out with friends…” She sounded like she was getting defensive and Andy could only look at her with eyes wide as he took in everything that she said.

“What is dancing?” He asked suddenly and Lily sighed-of course out of all the things he would take from her little outburst it would be that.

“Uh, well it’s when you move your body to the music that you’re listening to. Watch.” She stood then, grabbing for the iPod as Lily put on an angry and fast sounding song.

Andy watched as Lily thrashed around the room, kicking her legs out and flailing her arms around like she was trying to hit someone. He smiled as her face got really intense looking and soon Andy was up and jumping around with her. They laughed and kicked at one another, not hard enough to hurt and Andy could see why humans liked doing this. It got their aggression out and while Andy had always been taught to take his anger out on humans, he could see this as a good alternative. Suddenly the music changed to something slower and Lily stopped jumping, her eyes looking down at the floor as Andy stopped his movements and looked down at her.

“How do we dance to this?” He asked and Lily looked up at him, her cheeks red as she bit down on her lip and shuffled her feet.

“Do you really want to know?”She asked and Andy could only nod as he looked down at her.

Lily reached down, changing the song to the one that she had sung to before and as she came back up she moved towards him, her arms coming to rest on his shoulders. Andy just stood there and Lily huffed as she removed her hands from his shoulders and placed her palms on top of his hands and moved them so that they were resting against her hips. Her arms were back around his neck and she had moved close enough to Andy that her body brushed against his lightly. They swayed back and forth and as the song continued, Lily moved so that her head was resting against his chest gently and Andy found that he kind of liked dancing like this too. All too soon the song was over and they broke a part, something that Andy found he disliked and it was strange for him to feel this way.

“Um-so yeah…that’s how you dance.” She smiled up at him as she sat back down, crossing her legs underneath her as Lily waited for Andy to join her.

“Have you danced with a lot of people like that?” He asked, almost wary of what her answer would be. Something fell into his chest as he looked at her and Andy felt as if he would die himself if it came to be that she had been with others in that way.

“No…I wasn’t very popular when I was in high school…” Her voice was low and Andy noticed that Lily was gripping at her right wrist tightly as she avoided his gaze.

“Well that’s absurd…I like being around you, why wouldn’t other people?”His voice was low as Lily looked up at him and cracked a small smile.

“I don’t know if you know this Andy…you aren’t like most people.” They both laughed at this and Lily let her hands fall into her lap. Her eyes glanced over at his lap and she saw that he had one hand resting palm down against his knee, but the other hand was resting on its side nearest to her legs. Quickly and without thinking twice, Lily reached out and placed her hand in his.

It felt strange, sitting here with a human girl and laughing, their hands entwined, but Andy felt himself comforted by the simplicity of it. They laughed and joked as Lily told him more about being human and what it really was to be one. They all seemed to like movies, Lily seemed to really love them and she also seemed to really like something called Batman, which intrigued Andy as he thought about how a human could be part bat and still remain human. Maybe it was because Andy was part Demon and part human, but he found that he could relate to Batman in a way.

Finally after a few hours Lily’s yawns were growing deeper and her eyes were getting sleepier looking. Andy didn’t want to keep her up, so as her eyes began to close, he stopped talking and allowed her to fall asleep. Her hand still held his as she rested her head against the pillow and Andy didn’t dare move. He stayed there all night, playing over in his head the events that had happened the things that he had learned. He knew that tomorrow he would have to go talk to Cal-to see if there was even a way to get Lily home safely or if he would have to keep her hidden here for the rest of her afterlife. As he looked at her in the darkness, a soft smile came to his lips as Lily mumbled in her sleep and her small hand gripped his tightly.

Andy knew then that he had gotten in way over his head with this human, but for some reason he was okay with that and he looked forward to being around her more and more.
