A Demonic Love

Escape Your Fate

“You don’t look like everyone else down here…” Lily said, a smirk playing on her lips. Andrus looked down at her, his stomach filling with a fluttering feeling and as he looked at her he found himself unsure of how to answer her without giving away too much.

“I know-trust me, they remind me of that fact nearly every day.” His voice was sad as he looked past her, his eyes deep pools filled with loneliness. As Lily looked at him then, she realized that while he obviously knew her name, she hadn’t even bothered asking what his name was.

He was strange to look at-he looked so human sitting there in front of her, with his hands resting on his knees and one eyebrow raised in question, it made Lily nervous almost. His hair was long and black and it seemed like he couldn’t keep his bangs out of his eyes as he kept having to flick his head back to move the offending strands. His eyes-Lily could look in those eyes all day long, they were so crystal blue in their honesty as they stared back at her with a curious expression.

He’d seen lots of humans before, Lily was sure of it, and yet he kept staring at her like she was the first human he had ever set eyes on. Looking at him once more, Lily decided that he was cute, like someone she would have been crushing on when she was still alive. Alive-oh God what had she done? As she sat there looking at him, Lily felt her eyes begin to water as she thought back on her very huge mistake.

“Wha-what’s wrong?” His voice was low and nervous sounding as he sat there in front of her and Lily couldn’t meet his eyes as she sat there in front of him, her hands fidgeting in her lap as she continued to look down.

“I shouldn’t have done what I did…to myself.” Her tears spilled over, her hands coming from her lap to cover her eyes as Lily felt her palms grow wet as she sat there and cried softly.

“Come on…” She felt his hand on her arm and as she removed her hands from her face Lily looked up at him, her eyes questioning as he just looked down at her silently.

His brow was furrowed as he looked down at her and silently he wondered why she wasn’t moving, until finally realization hit him in the gut and Andrus moved down to kneel in front of her. He fumbled with the buckles of the straps that held her ankles and finally he had freed her. A moment later she was on her feet and as Lily looked up at him she giggled-she was so short compared to him, the top of her head only coming to about midway up his chest. He seemed to notice this as well as he looked down at her and soon they were both smiling at on another, something that Andrus didn’t do very often. Suddenly a noise came from somewhere outside and he held up a finger to his lips to quiet them both down.

“Where are we going?” She asked softly as he led her towards the door, but stopped short as he turned and looked down at her, his blue eyes mischievous as Lily just looked up at him questioningly.

“I’m getting you out of here, but first we have to wait while they change the guards around.” His hands reached out then, settling on her shoulders and Lily shivered at his touch. As she looked up at him, their eyes locked on one another, Lily realized that she still didn’t know his name.

“Why? And I’m sorry-I never asked you what your name is…” She was smirking up at him now and Andrus felt like his stomach had bottomed out. She had one of the brightest and most gorgeous smiles that he had ever seen and he hoped that he could see it again under better circumstances.

“I don’t know why I’m doing this-it goes against everything I’ve ever been taught, but I can’t kill you and I can’t sit by and watch another Demon do it in my stead. My name is Andrus-“ His face was so serious as he looked down at her that Lily couldn’t help but giggle and she had to hold a hand up to her lips to stay quiet.

“Andrus? That-that’s a good name I guess…” She giggled again and Andrus just looked down at her, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly as he strained his ears to hear what was going on outside of their tiny sanctuary.

“What would you have me be called then?” He asked her and Lily became serious as she thought for a moment.

“Andy-it sounds pretty close to Andrus. Would that be okay?” She asked, her voice small and timid as Andrus smiled down at her. Cal had always called him Andy and while Andrus had never understood why, maybe Cal knowing his true parentage had something to do with it.

“My best friend Cal calls me that sometimes…so yes, that’s fitting.” Andy smiled down at her and finally all was silent out in the hall. Slowly he pushed the door open, peeking his head around the frame to make sure the coast was clear.

The hall was clear and with a quick motion of his hand, Andy and Lily were moving slowly down the hall, their footsteps covered by the distant screams that rang out from inside still chambers. Lily clung to Andy, her hand wrapped around one of his arms as he led her towards a set of stairs and then they both headed up until they were out on the street.

The night was quiet, the bloodmoon full as Andy silently led her down towards his quarter building, the only sound filling the night was the soft thud of their feet hitting the cobblestones as they walked. Lily looked up as they came to stand outside of a large building and Andy just led her on silently, hoping that no one had seen them as they made their escape.

“This is my apartment. I figure you could stay here until I find a way to get you home…” Andy said quietly as he reached down, his fingers turning the knob as he pushed the door open and held his arm out for Lily to go ahead of him.

“You-you’re sending me home?” Lily was in shock as she turned to face Andy, taking him in as he stood there, one hand on the back of his head as he looked down at her through his bangs.

“I had planned to…I don’t know if it will work, but I’ll try my hardest. Sit.” He moved then, his warm fingers touching her skin as he led her over to a leather couch and they both sat facing one another. Andy sat there, his knees crossed as he faced Lily and noticed that she was sitting almost identically to him, her fingers moving to brush the hair from her face as she tried to avoid his eyes.

“Why? Why are you doing this?” She asked, her voice quiet as she looked up at him, those haunting lavender eyes searching deep into his own.

“I-I found out some things about myself earlier and it doesn’t feel right anymore…doing what I’ve been taught to do…” He fumbled for an answer. How could he tell her the truth? That one look into those eyes of hers and suddenly Andy felt something within him awaken. His humanity.

“What did you find out?” She had guts, Andy would give her that and suddenly he realized that she must be hungry or thirsty or cold and he moved to grab her a blanket from the chest in the corner.

“I thought I was pure Demon-everyone down here is, but I found out that I’m half human on my mother’s side. My entire existence has been a lie…” He sounded sad and as he handed her the blanket and sat back down, Lily tried to make eye contact with him.

“Oh, well you do look human…except for your ears…” She moved, her hand coming to swipe away his hair and Andy looked at her then, confusion lacing his face as she just smiled at him, biting down on her lip in the cutest gesture.

They sat there, looking at one another as Andy thought over the things that he had said and done in the past hour. He had told this girl-a total stranger- more about himself than most people would ever learn about him. She was slightly infuriating, she never seemed to hesitate and she wasn’t shy about saying or doing exactly what was on her mind. Never would he let anyone touch him the way she seemed to, moving his hair out of his face and grasping for his hands. Was that normal for humans? He supposed he would have to learn more about their strange ways if he ever hoped to be true to himself. Sighing, Andy moved to get up, walking into the kitchen to get two glasses of water before returning to his seat.

“How old are you?” She asked him suddenly, her glass resting against her lips as she smirked over at him and suddenly Andy felt his face flush. She was so brazen in her questions, something that most female Demons lacked.

“In Demon years? Two thousand. In human years I suppose I would be around seventeen-the same age as you…” He moved then and a soft thud could be heard as they both looked towards the ground and there, out in the open, lay the music player. Andy fumbled to pick it up, but Lily was quicker as she grabbed for it and held it up.

“You have iPods down here?” She asked, her fingers touching the item gently as she seemed to be staring at the screen and then suddenly soft noise began to play from the ends.

“No. The boy before you was able to sneak that in and I took it from him. What-what is that name you just called it?” Andy’s eyes roamed her face as Lily looked up from the music player and stared at him, almost in the same manner as she had when she first saw his face.

“It’s called an iPod. It plays music. See, you put the buds in your ears and then you can listen to it as loud as you want. There’s some really good music on here…” In saying this, Lily placed one bud in her own ear and handed Andy the other. She motioned for him to go ahead and he hesitantly placed the small bud in his ear, a gentle smile coming to his face as the music blared in his ear.

“Do you not have music down here?” She asked, her voice slightly louder so that he could hear her over the music. Andy looked at her, his face flushing as he shook his head, his thoughts lost in the music that was playing against his ear. He never knew that something so simple could make him feel so different.

“That sucks. Music was my-well-life when I was alive. It was the only thing that kept me going for as long as I did…” She stopped, her eyes welling up as Andy took her in and soon his hand was reaching out and grasping for hers. His fingers were long compared to hers and Lily smiled at him softly as she took their clasped hands in.

“We aren’t allowed to have music down here. Cou-could you teach me?” His voice was low towards the end as he avoided her eyes and Lily could only cock her head to one side as she thought over everything. It must be terrible-living in a place where you’re constantly made to feel like you don’t belong. She could understand since that’s how she felt her entire life, but at least she had music to help her.

“What exactly do you want me to teach you?” She asked, her fingers running over the top of his hand as Lily looked to him and smiled as Andy finally looked up at her, a shy smirk playing on his lips.

“…everything. Teach me how to be human…” He looked at her then, his eyes shining in the soft light of the room and Lily felt her heart stop.

How could he expect her to teach him how to be human when she had failed so miserably at being one herself?
