A Demonic Love

Friendly Disguises

It had been a week since Andy and Lily’s first kiss and Andy was kind of confused as to what should happen now that they had been intimate. He had really liked kissing Lily-he liked the way she had clung to him, like she needed him, but he still felt confused as this was all very new to him…human feelings and emotions. Everything was new to Andy-even his job, which Andy loved but he was slow to get used to doing things that didn’t require disembowelment or torture. He loved being able to listen to music all day and being surrounded by it was comforting, even though it made him think of Lily, which made him miss her as he worked and wondered what she was doing. Was she missing him? What the fuck was wrong with him? Andy slapped his forehead, smirking at himself and his stupid thoughts as he ripped open the tapped box that sat on the table in front of him.

Andy had listened to music so much while at work that he was even beginning to memorize some of his favorite songs and he would often sing along to them in the backroom when they came over the stereo system. He stood there, all alone, in the backroom and Andy smiled as a familiar song came over the system and he became so lost in singing along that Andy didn’t even notice that he was being watched from the doorway to the store. He was losing his touch, as he remained oblivious as he opened package after package, continuing to sing to himself and not once did he notice the presence looming over him as he worked.

“I thought you said you didn’t know how to play any instruments…”A voice called from behind him and Andy spun around at the sound, his right hand landing on the top of his dagger, but as he looked at the person standing before him he stopped, thankful that he had been paying close attention. It was only Jake, who was probably coming back to the back to remind Andy to take a break.

“I don’t…” Andy said, confusion lacing his sharp features as he stopped his work, laying the small box cutter down and looked to the older guy who stood before him. Andy liked Jake-he reminded Andy of Cal in a few ways and it made him miss his best friend and his home even more.

“Well you can sing pretty damn well.” Jake smiled at him and Andy’s eyes got wide as he thought over his friend’s words. He could sing? Since when? He liked to sing-he liked using his voice to express how he felt and he seemed to feel more connected to the music when he sang along to it. Andy had never thought about his own voice being considered an instrument.

“I-I guess I never thought about it that way…” Andy said as he sat down on a nearby stool and began to fidget, a bad habit that he had picked up from Lily where he was constantly having to move around, fluff the back of his hair or bite down on his lip ring. It was cute when she did it, but Andy was pretty sure he looked stupid. He wanted a cigarette, desperately and Andy cringed-that was another little nasty habit that he had picked up and they weren’t lying to him when they told him that it was addicting.

“You should come jam with Jinxx, CC and I sometime. We’ve been getting pretty serious about this band and we still need a singer.” Jake said this as he came over and sat down on a stool next to Andy. The kid was a little off-sometimes he said weird things or phrased things in a strange way and Andy never seemed to know what was going on, but Jake liked Andy and he could sing. His voice was deep and raspy and he could carry a note, something that the three of them were currently lacking.

“Yeah, that would actually be really fun.” Andy said, a smile on his face as Jake said nothing and then clapped the younger guy on the back and then moved to get up. Andy was cool, strange, but he was funny and as Jake walked back out to the store he smirked-things were about to get interesting.

Andy sighed, running a hand through his long hair as he looked around the room-he was ready for a break and things were at a good stopping point and besides…he needed to process some things. He stood, stretching his long arms over his head, hearing his bones crack and pop and he smiled-he had missed the sounds of bones snapping and it made him smile to hear it now. Andy kept smiling as he moved towards the door, opening the solid steel barrier to reveal the alley way between this building and the next and Andy sighed as he stepped out in to the LA heat. The alley was empty today, shocking as it was usually full of fellow smokers from the surrounding businesses, but alas today Andy was alone, left with his thoughts as he leaned up against the building, his foot resting behind him against the brick as he held his cigarette between his teeth. He rooted around his in pockets, searching in vain for his lighter and in his distraction Andy didn’t even notice the shadow that watched him from behind a nearby dumpster.

“I never figured you to be one to pick up vices here on Earth Andrus…” A voice, deep and raspy, sounded from behind him and Andy turned, his fingers grabbing for his dagger as he ducked and spun around.

It was the Demon from a week ago, his red almond shaped eyes staring Andy down as the two Demons squared off in the empty alley. Andy took the Demon in-it had blended in well with the human world, especially the part of the human world that Andy and Lily belonged to. It’s long hair was straight, black bangs hanging in front of its red eyes as it took Andy in. Black leather boots, chains hanging down from skinny pants, a black leather vest with a light pink t-shirt underneath-Andy smirked as he pulled out his dagger and crouched low to the ground. He had missed fighting like this-like a Demon. All humans wanted to do was use their words or their fists and while Andy had yet to fight a human, he was pretty sure he could best anyone who came at him.

“What do you want?! Who sent you?!” Andy called out, his feet apart in a defensive stance as the Demon before him merely laughed and then flew at the taller Half Demon.

“I have been sent by the Lord, Andrus-to bring you and the girl home to face your imminent death and hers as well.” The Demon had a hold of Andy, his fingers digging into Andy’s neck as he had him pinned against the brick wall of the building. Andy was out of practice and he was cursing himself for being so careless.

“You will die trying. No one will ever know where Lily is…take me, but you will never find her.” Andy said through gritted teeth and the Demon only laughed, his head falling back as his high cheekbones rose towards his eyes in a smirk.

“Oh Andrus, do you really think I’ve been the only one watching you? There are others…ten of us in fact. The Lord sent us up here himself to find you and to drag you down to the Pits of Hell!” The Demon screamed as Andy had freed one hand, the hand that held the dagger and he had sliced at the arm closest to him.

Andy broke free, pushing the shorter male away from him as he swiped the dagger out in front of him, hoping he would hit his target. The other Demon dodged around, that same smirk gracing his lips as Andy felt a sweat break out on his brow. When had he gotten so out of shape? His goal for the next day-if he managed to get out of this-was to start training again to keep himself fit. He had cursed the required training sessions when he had been in Hell, but now Andy was seeing the benefit of them. In an instant, while the smaller Demon had become distracted by a group of girls walking past, Andy had him pinned against the wall, his dagger to the flesh before him and Andy gritted his teeth as he looked into the eyes that bore in to his empty soul. Those eyes…he knew those eyes and up close he recognized them almost instantly.

“Cal?” Andy asked and the smaller Demon only smirked and winked at Andy. He felt like his stomach had dropped out and as Andy pinned his once best friend against the wall he wondered where everything had gone so wrong.

“I was wondering how long it would take for you to recognize me. The other Demons are gone-you can let me go…I won’t hurt you.” Cal said, his red eyes bright but Andy wasn’t sure. Why was Cal here and why did he look so strangely human all of a sudden?

“Why are you really here Cal and what’s with the disguise?” Andy asked as he loosened his grip, but he still held his dagger clenched in his fist as Cal breathed in a deep breath and smiled at his best friend.

“I came here to warn you-what I told you is true Andy-the Lord wants you back in Hell and he has sent others to come get you. I was sent because I know you so well and I had to blend in so this is how I wanted to look if I were human.” Cal said, holding his arms out and Andy only smiled as he took his best friend in.

“Why you? Do they know nothing of your betrayal to help Lily and myself?” Andy asked as he lit another cigarette and offered one to Cal, who declined and only smiled.

“They know only what I have told them. How is the little human? Still alive?” Cal asked as he leaned up against the building, his arms crossed over his chest and Andy growled at him lowly.

“Lily is fine-we are fine. You can go back home Cal…I will deal with the other’s as they come.” Andy said, his voice low and menacing as he puffed on his cigarette and then snuffed it out on the bottom of his boot. Cal only looked at him, a bemused smirk on his face as Andy turned to face his best friend.

“Old habits die hard Andy. Actually I’ve found that I rather like it up here among the humans and have decided to stay. The women up here are much more inviting than the Hell Spawn back home…” Cal smirked up at Andy as he nodded his head towards another group of girls that were passing them by near the mouth of the alley.

“You intend to stay? And use this disguise of course?” Andy asked as he began to head back into the building-his break had been over for awhile now and he was surprised Jake hadn’t come looking for him.

“Yes, I think it’s a pretty good one. Although I would like to get some of the same markings as you-tattoos?” Cal said as Andy only nodded and walked through the door into the back room.

Cal stopped at the threshold and stared Andy down as the younger Demon moved around the room smoothly. Andy seemed to be fitting in rather well up here and while his original intention had never been to stay, Cal couldn’t help but be fascinated by Earth and all of its mortal complexities. He was a book worm at heart and down in Hell Cal would never have found someone to mate with, but on Earth girls seemed to flock to him and Cal found that he liked their harlot ways as they threw themselves at him. Cal could tell that Andy had fallen for the human girl-Lily-simply by the way he said her name and the softness that entered his eyes when she was mentioned. It was horrid-love, but Cal found that he was happy that Andy had seemed to find his place.

“So will you be keeping your name up here Calvanis?” Andy asked as he turned from his boxes and smiled at Cal. Andy knew that that name would never work up here-it was too strange, even for the crowd that he and Lily hung around.

“Of course not…I’ve come up with a new name. A perfect name for my new identity.” Cal smirked at the younger Demon, his arms crossed over his chest.

“Oh yeah? Such as?” Andy asked, his arms straining as he began to move boxes from one side of the room to the other. Cal only smirked as he entered the room, picking up a box as he passed it to Andy and his almond shaped red eyes locked onto Andy’s baby blues as he just smiled and replied to his question with a smirk.

“Ashley. Ashley Purdy.”
