Chapter Five
Andy's P.O.V
Next day, 7:30 a.m.
Maddie looked completely tired, she would start to walk the room back and forth, check on Aaliyah and start to walk back and forth again. I wanted to try and comfort her but whatever I say or do won’t help much because at the same time I felt she wanted to desperately avoid me, seems as she was battling with something…finally she decided to stop by the window and it seemed she was about to cry, so I decided to get close and touched her shoulder, she turned around to look back at me with tears in her eyes and I need to admit it was heartbreaking to see her this way.
“Want to talk about it?” I asked.
“You don’t know how hard all this is for me, Andrew”
“I think I do know, Maddie…she’s my daughter too”
“You just found out about her”
“So?” I asked. “I feel I already love her and it pains me that we’re in this situation but something I know is that she’ll be okay”
She took a deep breath, “Don’t take her away from me please”
I frowned, “What you mean?”
“I meant, I know you’ll want to be in her life Andy and I know you’ll start a war for her custody and I-”
“Maddie, listen to yourself…I won’t start anything for her custody, I’ll see her when you let me see her and when she wants me to see her and I promise I’ll be a good father to her” I said all this as I took her hands in my mine.
“I wasn’t planning to look for you but if I can’t save my baby, I knew somehow you could”
“Let’s wait for the results and then we’ll talk about what we’ll do in the future”
“Andy, I don’t think there’s a future”
“But I do think there is because I want to give Aaliyah my last name, I want her to see me as her father, I want her to be in my life because I love her, I just found out about her existence but I love her Madison”
“You’re getting married” she said. “Have you think about what your future wife will say when she finds out you have a five-year-old daughter?”
“Yes, I have thought about it and if Juliet loves me, she’ll accept Aaliyah too”
“I’m sorry but I’m not letting you walk into my daughter’s life and then walk out like you walked out of mine”
“I walked out of your life?” I asked. “I desperately looked for you, Maddie”
“You didn’t Andy because you were busy living your dream, you were busy dating girls out of this world, you were busy having wild sex, you were busy for your best friend and just like that you left me behind without slightly caring about me or Aaliyah”
I took a deep breath, I wanted to start crying but I have to hold it back, I need to be strong because everything she was saying was true, it was nothing but the truth.
“We’ll talk about this later, right now let’s focus on our daughter”
She just nodded.
To change the topic, I remember neither of us had breakfast. “Do you want something to eat?”
She shook her head, “I’m not hungry”
“Maddie, you need to eat something and you need to rest too, you look pale and tired”
I sighed, “I don’t want to leave her”
“You don’t have to, I’ll go and get us something to eat and when I’m back you’ll sleep and I’ll watch over her, okay?”
“Andy, I can’t ask much from you-”
I interrupted her, “I’m doing it because I want to, okay? I’ll come back soon”
I kissed her forehead and left the hospital room.
Later that day, 2:50 p.m.
Maddie was finally resting, sleeping all the hours she haven’t been sleeping since she’s been in the hospital with our daughter. The doctor was trying to explain to me the process and everything Aaliyah’s going to have to go through to recover from surgeries, radiography and chemotherapy, my baby girl practically will be suffering through all this.
“Andy?” a little voice said.
I walked towards the bed and held her little hands in mine, “Yes, princess?”
“Where’s mommy?”
“She’s resting, love…do you need anything?”
She shook her head, “I feel tired”
“Sleep, you need it”
“What time is it?”
I turned to look at the clock that was on the wall, “2:52P p.m.”
“I’ve been sleeping a lot”
“Yes, honey…the doctor said that you’ll start to sleep a lot because your body needs it”
“Andy, why I’m here? What’s happening to me? What’s cancer?”
I couldn’t help but to just look at her, she was too young, too little, too innocent to understand what’s happening and I didn’t want to tell her what it is, I didn’t want her to constantly hear the doctor say she was probably going to die, I didn’t want her to panic so I just lied.
“It’s nothing, sweetheart…your mom just got scared and brought you here and you’ll leave when you get better”
“But I feel better now, I want to go home”
“But sweetheart, you need to stay here for a couple of more days and you’ll be able to go home”
“How many days?” she asked.
I shrugged, “I don’t know but we’ll be out of here before you know it, okay? Do you want to watch a movie or your favorite show?”
She shook her head, “I just want to sleep”
“Okay, want me to sing for you?”
“Can you sing my favorite song?”
“Which is your favorite song?” I asked.
“Carolyn, Black Veil Brides”
I froze…she knows about our band?
“How do you know about that band?”
“My mom sings that song to me ever since I can remember”
“Really princess?” I asked as I looked at her.
She nodded.
“Okay, let me sing for you then”
She smiled and said, “Okay”
I started to sing Carolyn for her and her eyes held something I couldn’t describe, it was worrying me so I had to stop and ask, “What’s wrong?”
“You’re the lead singer of the band, aren’t you?”
I smiled and nodded, “You caught me”
“Wow…”
“Do you still want me to sing for you?”
She nodded enthusiastically, “Yes please”
“My pleasure, sweetheart”
I continue to sing for her until she fell asleep, I couldn’t help but to smile at her beautiful face. I decided to walk out of the room and turn my phone on, there were a bunch of notifications, text messages, missed calls, it seems the guys and a lot of other people were seriously worried about me but I wasn’t going to return any calls or answer texts because I didn’t know how to explain to them what was going on, how would I tell my bandmates and especially my future wife that I’m a dad? How?
“Everything okay?” the sleepy voice that belonged to Maddie said from behind.
I turned to look at her and smiled, “Yeah, everything’s okay…just a bunch of missed calls, that’s all”
“Andy I know that you have things to do and you can’t be stuck with us 24 hours”
“Maddie, I don’t mind being here with you and Aaliyah” I said. “You guys need me here, I need to take care of you and I need to take care of her”
“Andy, I’ll be fine…”
“Madison, you’re barely sleeping, you’re barely eating…I need to stay and make sure you don’t pass out anytime soon”
“Andrew, I’m completely fine”
“Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately?”
“Please, just please…leave”
“I’m not going anywhere”
“6 years ago you were able to walk away, why not now!?” she yelled.
“Because things are different now, Maddie!” I yelled back.
“What’s so different now, huh!?”
“We have a daughter!”
“So what!?”
“And I still love you!” with that being said, I pulled her towards me and kissed her.
