Sons of Night

Chapter 29

Ashley’s POV
“Fuck you!” I spat, “Let me see my friends. I’ve told you our story and it’s the truth,” I glared at the man in front of me. His tan suit was perfect, his hair combed back, and face shaven clean. I sat in front of him hand cuffed to a table, because I was dangerous he said. I was still covered in dirt and grime, it’d been two days since I’d shaven. Jail bathrooms were not the place I wanted to spend my time.
“I told you, Mr. Purdy, you will get out once all of your friends have told their stories as well. Then you’ll be able to see them,” The investigator, Mr. Reciffo, said calmly from across the table. I glared at him harder.
“You haven’t even told me if Mayden’s alive, or Andy!” I growled tugging at my chains.
“No offense Mr. Purdy, but someone who is wanted for rape and murder doesn’t have the highest amount of rights in the United States,” He said.
“I never raped anyone! The girl was lying!” I yelled attempting to stand up from the chair. The chains on my wrists kept me from getting up all the way. Two uniformed officers came and pushed me back down into the chair. Mr. Reciffo leaned forward in his chair, looking at me.
“Then why’d you run?” He asked.
“No one believed me,” I said, I was breathing hard. Mr. Reciffo looked at his watch.
“I have another interview to do, assuming the hospital will let me in his room. Take Mr. Purdy back to his cell, and somebody make him take a shower,” Mr. Reciffo said. He stood up briskly, grabbed his briefcase and left the room. Two uniformed officers unchained me from the chair and recuffed my hands behind my back, then they lead me back down the corridor and in the direction of my cell.
Mayden’s POV
I was sitting up in the hospital bed. Both of my legs were wrapped in casts, I could hardly move from the waist down because of it. My stomach was wrapped in gauze and had been surgically put back together, or so they told me, I hadn’t seen it and I’d been unconscious upon arrival to the hospital. The police officers kept telling me that Andy and the rest of the Sons of Night where safe, but they wouldn’t let me see any of them. They told me that Andy was somewhere in the hospital but when I asked about the others, they wouldn’t tell me a location. I desperately wanted to see him, just to see for myself that he was okay. Another part of me really wanted to see him so he’d kiss me, but I tried to ignore that part. They had had a lot of female police officers in my room to talk to me. As well as psychologists, therapists, and an investigator named Reciffo. He was nice enough, but people were asking me so many questions, and I was very tired.
“Mayden?” The officer asked snapping me out of my thoughts. She’d asked me a question, and I hadn’t heard her. He name was Officer White, she was taking down notes on every single thing that I said.
“I’m sorry, what did you say?” I asked. She gave me a concerned look.
“I asked you if you were sexually assaulted while you were in the woods with those boys,” She asked. I didn’t think about it.
“No, of course not. They’re good people,” I said. She stared at me for a moment like she didn’t believe me.
“You’re sure? You don’t have to cover for them just because they saved you honey,” Officer White said softly.
“I’m sure, they didn’t touch me,” I said, even though it was technically a lie. Andy had made out with me, but she didn’t need to know about that. All she needed to know was that they were innocent. Officer White gave me another stern look, but seemed to accept that I was telling the truth.
“Can I see Andy now?” I asked, maybe she’d cut me a break. I’d been so patient.
“Why do you want to see him so badly?” Officer White asked her caramel colored hands folded on top of her clipboard. That stopped me for a second, I had to think, what was a reasonable answer? I couldn’t say that I wanted a minute alone to kiss him, that would be bad.
“He saved my life, and he and his friends are the only people outside of my immediate family that act like they care about me,” I said.
“Honey, there is a thing that’s called Stockholm Syndrome. It’s when you feel love towards someone who has taken advantage of you, put themselves in a position where they are more powerful than you. You do not care about him, you love him for saving you. That man is a wanted criminal, a murderer. He’s not someone you want to fall for,” She said gently. I hadn’t even mentioned liking him, my emotions were just that obvious.
“I don’t care, I want to talk to him. To all of them. They treated me like family,” I said, I hated it, but I wanted to cry because I felt to helpless. Officer White leaned back and pursed her lips.
“You know I only want what’s best for you,” Officer White said, and I knew that she genuinely meant what she said.
“Please just let me talk to Andy,” I nearly begged.
“You’ve been through a lot, Mayden. You need to take some time and sort it all out in your head. Think about the fact that he may have been using you. Toying with the teenage emotions in your head. People like you crave affection, just like he craved catching that killer, I think he could have used you to get there,” She said, I hated it. She was looking at me sadly and shaking her head like she pitied me. I didn’t want her to pity me. I remembered Andy in the woods, and how he’d wanted to get near me. It was possible that Officer White was right. I refused to believe that though, not until I talked to him.
“What if he craves the affection like I do, what if he wasn’t using me and it was genuine,” I said, my voice was surprisingly steady. Officer White shooked her head.
“I still don’t think he’s someone one you want to try to get involved with, Honey. I hear the psychologists who’ve been watching him talking. He’s twenty-four years old and has the mental age of a teenager. He probably has anxiety, extreme PTSD, and massive abandonment issues; not to mention he’s very controlling and has a very, very short fuse. He’s a poster child for an abusive relationship. I know you’ll be eighteen very soon, but he is not someone that I think should be messed with until he’s gotten proper help,” She said touching my hand. I pulled my hand away quickly.
“You don’t know,” I said, shaking my head.
“What do you mean,” She asked.
“You’ve seen him in an environment that could make anyone go crazy. He’s not what you think he is. He’s gentle, and caring. He loves the people around him so much, and he’s smart. He and his group caught the killer before the police station had a suspect. He’s more than whatever label you put on him,” I said. Officer White stood. She swallowed and turned towards the door of my room.
“That is your decision to make, Honey. Just think about it. Think about all sides of the story. I’ll see about you getting to talk to him tomorrow. He’s still very weak,” She said. She turned back to me, gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze and flashed a smile, then she was gone.
