Sons of Night

Chapter 28

Andy’s POV
It was almost totally dark in the hospital room. The only light came from street lights on the the road outside my room. The dim lights filtered in through blinds leaving striped patterns on the wall. It was late, close to midnight, but I didn’t really care to look at the clock and see. It had been quite the day. After I woke up my parents had come in and hugged me and kissed me more than I’d ever been hugged and kissed in my entire life. My mom was crying of course, and my dad looked like he was trying not to. Police came in with them, I did my best to ignore them, but I guessed why they were there. To try to make sure that I didn’t figure out what story to tell to match up with the other guys. We didn’t talk about them though. We caught up. It was the first time since I’d been back that we’d really been able to talk. We talked about family members, marriages, children, breakups. Just about everything I had missed as far as drama in the family goes. It was nice to get my mind off of everything else.
They didn’t let me see any of the guys, or Mayden. That really pissed me off. I wanted to see her and make sure that she was okay, but they said that because we both were on bed rest for a while we couldn’t see each other. They didn’t want the guys around me because they thought we were going to make up some story together. Apparently they kept all the guys separate from each other and were trying to get them to talk. Seeing if they all told the same story. That’s what my parents told me at least. Then the nurses made them leave, I needed rest they said. They were probably right. At that point my head was throbbing and I was getting out of breath just from talking too much. The nurses said that someone was going to be there to talk to me in the morning. So everyone had left and I was alone. It was about seven at night by that point. The nurse told me to just relax, calm down and lay in bed and watch TV. That was a hard thing for me to do.
I decided, though, that it was in my best interest to do as I was told. So I didn’t argue. I watched TV even though I had no idea what the shows were because I’d been gone so long. After about two hours of relaxing the nurse came in and told me that it was time for me to go to bed. I resisted pointing out the fact that I was in bed and had been in bed all day. So I had just nodded and rolled over to face the wall. I’d been that way for about three hours. Not moving, not sleeping, just thinking. Watching the shadows on the walls. Part of me screamed that I needed to escape, but the rest of me knew that this was my end game. Laying in the hospital bed waiting for people to determine if I’d be put in prison, sentenced to death or set free. I hoped that I was set free, all though it didn’t seem highly likely. Suddenly I heard the door to my room open. Light flooded the room from the hall, there were shadows of two nurses cast on the floor. They were talking in a soft joking manner.
“So it’s you who has to check up on the living dead boy?” One of them said in a teasing whisper. I rolled my eyes.
“Yeah, lets hope he hasn’t escaped into the night,” the other one laughed. I considered yelling to them that I was still here, but I stayed quiet. They thought I was sleeping, I was going to let them think that.
“Have you heard, some of the younger nurses think that he’s super hot,” the first nurse said.
“I can’t say I disagree with them, everyone likes a bad boy,” the second nurse said quietly. I heard them both stifle laughter, I couldn’t help the smirk that tugged at my cheeks.
“Well I have to go finish my rounds, good luck with him,” the first nurse said.
“He should be asleep, anyway I’ll see you later, save me some coffee,” The second nurse said. Then the shadow of one of them turned and walked down the hall. The other turned into the room.
The light from the door went away as it closed. I closed my eyes, stilled my face, and slowed my breathing. I heard the nurse pad quietly into the room. She was behind me, looking at my IV drip and reading the chart by my bed.
“You can tell the younger nurses I’m not interested,” I said rolling over. The nurse jumped and then sighed.
“You’re supposed to be asleep,” She said, chastising me.
“I tried but I couldn’t,” I said. She shook her head at me, smiling a bit.
“I’m actually kind of glad that you’re awake, I have to change the bandages on your head, make sure everything looks okay. Do you care if I turn the lights on?” She asked, I shrugged.
“No, I don’t care,” She walked to the light switches and flicked one of them on. I flinched in the bright light. I sat up in the bed, looking around like I expected something to have changed, but nothing had changed it was just the same as it had been when the lights went off. She came back over to me and sat the bed up so I could recline. She came over and started unwrapping the gauze from my head.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“You can call me Ellie,” She said.
“Ellie, are the people here scared of me?” I asked. She was silent for a long moment, she just kept taking off the bandages.
“I think that everyone is more just shocked that you are who you are and you’re alive,” She said. I nodded.
“But do people, you know, think that I’m a murderer?” I asked.
“Well everyone who knows who you are of course thinks you’re a murderer, because you did in fact murder someone,” She said.
“I’m innocent, it was self defense,” I said, “I didn’t mean to kill him, I didn’t know he was that close to the stairs,” She turned my head to the light so she could see the wound better.
“You’re a fast healer,” She said, “This wound looks very good, no infection or anything,”
“Are you afraid of me?”
“No, you seem like a very nice guy to me, but whether I believe you are innocent or not doesn’t matter. The judge is who has to decide if you killed that boy or not,” She said.
“I’m innocent. I’d never hurt someone on purpose,” I said defiantly. She started wrapping my head back up.
“Then why’d you run?” She asked as she stuck the fresh bandages down.
“Because I knew no one would believe me. Everyone in that school hated me,” I said. She sighed.
“Well who says they’re going to believe you now?” She asked.
“I don’t know. I hope they do though,” I said. She sighed again.
“For your sake, I hope they do too. In my opinion by stopping that killer you’ve saved more lives than you’ve taken,” She said, “Now go to sleep, Andy,” she laid the bed back down and pulled the blankets over me. As she left the room and turned the light off a yawn stretched my jaw. Somehow as the lights went off I was suddenly tired. I rolled over onto my side, and didn’t have to stare at the wall for very long before I was asleep.

Notes

Boom! There it is second update, if you all are subscribed to the prequel Children of Dawn go check it out that's where the other update is. This chapter is a bit more mellow, but don't worry there's more to come, a lot of loose ends need to be tied up.
