Rise From the Ashes

Violet's POV:

Andy and I stayed like that for quite some time, tears cascading down our cheeks and our bodies locked in a tight embrace. We said nothing, the only sound our ragged breathing or the occasional choked sobs erupting from my throat. Andy clutched even tighter to me and brushed a hand through my tangled locks, pulling me closer to his lean body. I shuddered against his chest, a sudden chilling sensation breaking me to the bone and ripping through my thin clothing. Andy wrapped me even tighter in his arms, before he stood up, pulling me with him. In one swift motion, he swept me off my feet and began walking back towards his tent.

I was stunned to see the night sky shining down above us. The few stars twinkling brightly in the midnight sky. I shuddered as a gust of wind billowed, and I turned my body towards Andy's, the cold numbing me.

He gently set me down on his bed, and sat down beside me, exhaling loudly. He ran a hand anxiously through his dark hair and glanced at me.

"Are you okay?" I asked, scooting closer to him and putting a hesitant hand on his shoulder.

Andy sighed and stared ahead, silent.

"Andy, you can't just bottle up your emotions, you'll kill yourself that way. Trust me," I whisper quietly.

He finally turns to look at me, his expression soft and curious. "What do you mean?"

I sigh and turn away, bringing my knees to my chest as the painful memories wash over me once again. "Let's just say F.E.A.R also ruined my life as well."

Andy tugs abruptly on my leg, pulling me closer to him, "tell me," he insists.

"Before I was on my own, I lived in the city. My parents didn't agree with William's ruling, but he did it to protect us. Secretly, he would occasionally leave town for a couple days, sometimes a week, to work with an organization of rebels to overthrow F.E.A.R. One day, when I came home from school, William was there, in my house, holding my mother at gunpoint. My dad was already dead when I got home. They killed my mother shortly after, and I tried my best to protect my sister, but they got to her before I could."

The distinct memories rip through me, threatening to break me again. I've always wondered why F.E.A.R decided that they needed to obliterate my family, why kill my father, my mother, my baby sister. During my months in captivity, I occasionally overhead the guards talking, saying how my dad had a hidden secret that somehow revolved around me. I never knew at the time what that meant, now I think I know. My dad was trying to protect me, to stop William from finding out that there was a sixth Wild One. I guess he died in vain.

"What happened after that?" He asks, his voice hushed.

I take a deep breath, "I ran after that. I was fifteen. Ever since, I survived on my own. For the first year, I stayed stayed in the city, hiding in alleys and with friends. Then I was almost captured, and I ran to the border. That's basically it," I shrug.

Andy pulls me into his arms and squeezes me comfortingly, "I'm sorry," he whispers.

I sniffle as my eyes begin to water once again and i furiously blink them back. I hate crying, it makes me feel weak, and after what I went through during my capture, I never want to feel weak again.

"They took everything from me," I whisper, "which is why I want to be the one to stab William in the heart."

Andy grins maliciously at my remark, "then I'll do whatever it takes to make that happen."
