An Angels Last Fall

Snake

Everything hurt. But mostly my heart was in pain. I clenched my chest tight and slowly opened my eyes. The golden light of heaven was gone. The smell of clean air and chirping birds all but dead. I sighed heavily and let a tear fall from my face. How could my brother do that to me?

I sat up slowly feeling heavy. Every bone in my body seemed to make noises and move around while I was positioning myself to see my surroundings. There were small buildings with ladders and slides. Children were playing on them and screaming. I felt beneath me to see that I was laying on grass. Some of what I presumes to be the children’s parents were looking at me. Whispering to each other and others were talking to themselves through some rectangle they held to their ear.

Phone! I remembered. It was hard to keep up with them. One minute they are happy with animals pulling them to and from the store the next they had jet planes whizzing them through the sky at 500 miles an hour. Humans were too anxious to get where they needed.

I grunted as I got to my feet. I felt a sharp pain in my left foot. I sat back down to see that I had gotten a small piece of wood in my heel. It hurt. I rubbed it and looked behind me. I looked behind me to see a small picnic area. I walked over to it making sure not to step down on my left heel. I grabbed a pair of shoes that were left at the end of the table and walked toward the street. The cars drove by my slowly. There seemed to be a lot of them. Honking at one another occasionally.

I put the shoes on and looked up at all the buildings. This was much busier than Heaven. The buildings looked like they could reach the clouds.

“City,” I mumbled.

I took my eyes off of the towers and watched the people move. Most of them looked busy or late. Rushing past me, shoving me out of the way if needed. I willingly let them push me off of the side walk. When a car was starting to come close to me it honked and I ran back onto the sidewalk. I decided to move in case something like that happened again. Better to go with the current then try to stand your ground.

I wondered around for only a few minutes when I saw a woman coming out of a store with her arms piled high with bags. I cocked my head when she dropped one of them. I went closer to her and picked up her bag for her. I smiled as I handed it back. She snatched it out of my hands and gave me a sly smile. She had short blonde hair and jewelry everywhere. She had on pointed boots with a small heal and a one piece suit that seemed to be covered in scales.

I reached my handout to touch her sleave when she pulled away from me fast. “What are you wearing?” I asked.

She seemed to give a small laugh then popped out one of her hips. “Snake skin. You’ve never seen it before.” (It’s a snake skin jumper btw I couldn’t find a good pic of one on the internet.) The women then finally looked me up and down give a sneer. I had never watched over anyone of this nature. It was so unfamiliar. “What hole did you crawl out of?”

“Actually I fell.” I thought to myself.

The woman finally got a glow on her face and a small smile. She put her bags on the ground and reached her hand out to me. “I’m Juliet.” She gave me a big smile.

I took her hand, “Ciarra.”

“Well, Ciarra I think you need some new clothes. What size are you? Four?” Why had she been so rude to me at first and now she was happy to see me?

“Uhm…” I stuttered. “I don’t know, I’m new here.”

“I can see that.” Juliet rubbed her hand on my upper arm. “What’s wrong with your foot?”

I looked down to see that I was still avoiding stepping on my heel. “I got a small piece of wood in it.”

“Oh honey, let me take you to my house and we can get you cleaned up and get that splinter out okay?” She now put both of her hands on either side of me. I attempted to bring myself closer to my body but I agreed.
