We're Setting Worlds On Fire

Didn't Anyone Tell You?

They had only been on the road for two hours, but to Lily it felt like an eternity. She had forgotten how slowly time moved on Earth-in Heaven time whipped around her like a hurricane. It had taken getting used to, but Lily had finally seemed to be adjusting…now she was back on Earth and miserable. She was sitting up front with Andy, a road map in her lap as her head leaned up against the cool glass of the window and she looked out at the passing scenery. Andy had happily informed her that he had learned how to drive shortly after her death-as if Lily hadn’t watched him the entire time. She had also laughed her head off as Jake gritted his teeth every time he got in to a car with Andy while he was still learning.

The rest of the guys were all sitting in the back of the van-most of them were already passed out either from exhaustion or from drinking too much. She sighed, her cheeks puffing out as Lily looked beside her and took Andy in. He was sitting there, happily babbling on about how much he had missed her, what she had missed while she was gone and how happy he was that she was back. Lily only rolled her eyes-this was getting more and more pathetic and she needed it to stop. She wasn’t happy to be back…she was pissed the fuck off and hearing him talk about her being back was only making her angrier.

She wanted to sleep-she desperately wanted to just lean her head back, close her eyes and pass out for a few hours. She couldn’t though-dammit. Angels never slept, not even a little bit. It had puzzled her at first, never feeling tired and never being able to dream again-it was weird. But in the end it proved to be a good thing because Lily knew that she would probably only have dreamt of Andy at first. The van got eerily silent and Lily only smiled as she looked to her left and noticed that Andy was sitting there yawning. He was probably just as tired as the rest of the guys, but being the only one who was sober, he was stuck driving.

Finally Andy had seemed to run out of things to say because he was just staring out the front window, his blue eyes focusing on the road in front of them. Lily smiled as she looked out the front window as well, but quickly she felt like she was being stared at. He was looking right at her, those blue eyes of his haunting in the headlights of oncoming cars in the opposite lane. He looked so sad and he kept looking at her, looking at the road and then he would look back to her. Lily said nothing-what could she say? Instead she just tucked a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear and cleared her throat as she made eye contact with him at last.

“Yes?” Lily asked and he only shook the hair out of his face as Andy looked at her before turning his eyes to the road. She looked amazing sitting there next to him and he longed to reach out and run his fingers through her hair. She had always loved it when he played with her hair, twirling it around his fingers as they cuddled on the couch together late at night.

“Why won’t you let me touch you?” He asked, his eyes back on the road and Lily could hear the sadness in his voice. Why did this have to be so hard? Why couldn’t he just accept the fact that they couldn’t be together? He wasn’t full Demon-he wasn’t even half at this point-but he was still the heir to the throne in Hell and Lily had already been punished enough…she didn’t want to make things worse.

“Because it’s not appropriate.” She said, her voice fierce and her tone was final. If he touched her-if he even looked at her a certain way…that would be it. Lily would be a goner with no self control and she knew that she would fall all over again.

She would fall in love with him and that just couldn’t happen.

“Appro-WHAT?!Since when did you give a shit if we were being appropriate or not?” Andy asked loudly and Lily only cringed. Someone in the back grumbled in their sleep and she only hoped that none of the others would wake up to over hear their conversation. This was hard enough with just she and Andy-Lily didn’t need the entire van to hear their conversation.

“When I got to Heaven and was told that there were rules between you and I and we broke those rules. That’s why I died and since you kept breaking the rules…I’m here and I’m not fucking happy about it Andy.” Lily grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest as the map in her lap fluttered to the floorboard and she just left it there.

“Who gives a shit about their rules?! Lily we love each other-that’s all that matters. I love you and you love me and now we can be together again!” He was yelling, but his voice was still just above a whisper. They were stopped behind some late night traffic and so he was looking at her, his blue eyes angry as Lily just kept her eyes trained on the car in front of them.

“I don’t love you Andy. Please-please understand that. I loved you when I was a human, yes, but now you’re just someone who I have to be in charge of. I’m not your friend, your girlfriend or your lover. I’m your mentor and you need to listen to me when I say that you need to get your hand off of my arm before I catch it on fire!” She was looking down at her arm, her nostrils flared and her eyes angry. Andy had placed a hand on her wrist, having flipped it over to reveal her pale and perfect skin underneath. What had happened to her scars?

“S-sorry. Lily?” Andy asked softly and Lily finally looked over towards him. They were moving again, so he was watching the road before them, but as she looked at him, Lily could see the sense of confusion behind his eyes. He had seen her wrists when she was a human-he knew how scared and marked up her skin was…now it was a perfect and smooth as marble.

“Yeah…” She said and then he looked at her-those blue eyes of his were round and wide, childlike as he looked at her and bit down on his lower lip. She had moved her arms to cross over her chest once again, but her shoulders were slumped in a more relaxed fashion as she sat there and looked at him.

“What happened to your scars? What happened to you when you went to Heaven?” Andy asked quietly. He was pulling off on an exit-probably to a truck stop where they would gas up and then sleep for a little while. Everyone was exhausted-everyone but her and Lily wasn’t looking forward to sitting around all night while everybody slept around her.

“Everything was taken away from me. My scars, my pain…even some of my memories. When I died…I lost everything Andy and at first I was heart broken because of that fact, but then a few of the other Angels helped me and I became stronger.” Lily said, her lavender eyes filled with sadness as Andy looked over at her. They had finally stopped for the night at an almost empty truck stop and Andy was thankful for that. He was beyond exhausted and ready to sleep for a few hours.

“Who helped you?” He asked as he pulled the keys from the ignition and set them on the dashboard. Lily said nothing as she watched him lean his seat back slightly and pull his hood up over the top of his head. There was a light shining from above them and with a quick snap of her fingers Lily smirked as the bulb in the street lamp blew out and they were bathed in near darkness.

“An Angel named Michael. He came into the receiving room where I was being kept and talked me down. I can remember crying, hysterically, and then he showed up. He was so nice and he helped me up and took me to the Viewing Chamber. I watched Uriel fly down to you in that cemetery and I heard what she said to you…it helped me move on from things.” She explained and then Lily noticed that Andy was sitting up, his eyes sad as he looked at her. He had always wondered what had happened to her when she died and now was his chance to find out.

“Did you see a white light? I remember holding you, kissing you and then you just kind of faded…it was the most devastating thing ever.” Andy said, his voice childlike and Lily could understand his reaction. She had been terrified to die and when she died the first time it had remained terrifying as she fell from Earth and everything had grown dark and hot. But going to Heaven had been the complete opposite-peaceful and something to not be scared of.

“I did see a white light, but I also saw you in my mind’s eye. I watched Ashley hold you back as they took me away…I watched you mourn for me in the days following that. I saw you dive head first into my funeral and I watched you bury me. I watched it all and it broke me, but I couldn’t remain broken. Gabriel made sure of that as soon as I got to Heaven…” Lily mused, biting down on her lower lip as she thought about her mentor. He had been strict with her from the beginning, never letting her get away with anything and he certainly didn’t show her much sympathy.

“How long have you been watching me? How much have you seen?” Andy asked, his voice slightly embarrassed as he thought back to all of his behavior. Had she seen him with all of those girls? Had she seen the things that he had done…the things he had said to those girls? He had made a lot of them cry and he had probably made them feel bad about themselves…he had been the ultimate douchebag.

“Too much. Yes I saw you and Ashley indulging in a lot of things, but I also watched the others as well. I mostly watched you while you slept…mumbling my name and crying out for me. It broke my heart the first few times…” Lily was sitting with her knees against her chest, her chin resting on the top as she looked at him. Her blonde hair had fallen in her face, covering half of it and Andy felt his breath hitch in his chest as he looked at her. How could someone be so utterly perfect?

“If it hurt you so badly then why the cold shoulder? Why did it take you so long to come down to Earth…to make yourself known?” Andy asked. His was mirroring her body language-his long legs were up against his chest, but his chin wasn’t resting on top. He was looking right at her, his straight black hair was hanging around his face and Lily couldn’t help but think about how cute he looked in that moment.

“I told you-we can’t be together. I missed you Andy…more than you will ever know, but I can’t let myself give in to you again. I just can’t do it…” Lily said and Andy could hear the frustration in her voice. He was pushing her, he would always push her and he knew that one day she would come to him willingly because they were meant to be together…they had been made for one another.

“I know you can if you would just try…just let me hug you, cuddle you…let me love you like you deserve to be loved.” His voice was deep and sleepy sounding and Lily knew that he was getting to the point of throwing an exhaustion fueled temper tantrum.

“I don’t deserve to be loved Andy. I don’t want anything but for you and the guys to get your shit together and get our Army back to full strength.” She had opened the door and was climbing out. Was she running away? Andy only sat there and watched as Lily got out of the van, but held the door open and just stood there and stared at him.

“You do deserve to be loved Lily. You deserve to be happy and it isn’t fair that they won’t let you be happy…” He said, leaning towards her with his fingers out stretched. If she would just move a little closer to him, he would be able to grasp for her hand, hold it and rub his thumb across her skin like he used to.

He longed for them to be together again, even if was just as friends. Andy could see that Lily wanted the same thing-she missed him, he could tell. But there was also something in her that was holding her back and that made Andy angry. Where was the Lily who he used to know and love? Where had she gone? The girl who would make funny faces just to make him laugh-the girl who would giggle every time he tickled her behind her ears with his kisses. Where was the girl who had walked him through life-who had taught him everything about being human? Where was the girl who had loved him so much that she had died for him? Where was the Lily that he had fallen in love with?

“This is so unfair…” He grumbled, placing his head against the head rest as Andy turned his face towards where she was still standing. Lily had gotten out of the van because she knew that they couldn’t be in such an enclosed space right now. Andy was tempting her and she wanted to give in more and more. Lily couldn’t do that and so while he was sleeping she was going to go for a walk and try to come up with a game plan.

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you?” She asked, cocking an eyebrow at him as Andy sat up and looked at her quizzically.

“Tell me what?” He asked and as Andy looked at Lily-watched her slam the van door but the window was still down so he could hear her sigh heavily as she looked at him with a deep sadness in her eyes.

“Love isn’t always fair…”

@FallenAngel26

Aww I'm so glad you liked it! This series was really fun for me to write because I was able to put so much imagery in to it.

Just finished this series and oh my gosh! I can honestly say that a fan fiction had not made me cry until now. This story hit me right in the feels, expecially the 'just tonight' chapter. It just makes me so sad that they love each other so much but they can't be together. Anyways I love your stories, they are some of my favorites on this site :).

I just have to say that after reading this I now look at God Bless You as a way of telling Satan off

@Truly A Teenage Runaway

Aww well thanks! Start with A Love By Mistake as that is actually where this story is supposed to go. I warn you-I have A LOT of work haha so it may take some time.
