We Caught Fire

We Don't Belong Here

Odessa stood still, her eyes stared straight ahead of her as the cool spring wind blew around her ankles. She continued to stare upwards, her eyes trying to take in every last detail of her childhood home for the very last time. The color of the siding, the shingled roof that she had spent so many nights sitting on as she looked at the stars. The covered porch where she would sit waiting for Moira so they could walk to the bus stop and looking over towards the yard, Dess noticed their old tire swing that hung from an old oak. That old tire swung softly in the breeze, almost as if Moira was swinging in it gently. Dess felt angry, so much so that her teeth clenched until they hurt. She didn’t want to leave, but she knew she had to. The band was to start their summer European Tour with Motely Crue in a week. Both she and Andy had things they needed to get done before the start of the tour.

“You ready to go babe?” Andy asked, breaking Dess’ spell as she turned to him and smiled softly. She turned to look back at her home and Dess felt her heart fracture at the thought that she would never see this place again. Moira would never see this place again.

“I don’t have much of a choice so yeah.” Her voice was sad as Dess turned away from the empty house and faced Andy. His blue eyes were bright in the sun, but there was a sadness that clouded over them as he looked down at her.

“I’m sorry babe…” He couldn’t say much, but Andy placed a protective arm around her shoulders and led Dess towards the waiting car. He wanted to take her pain, every last ounce of it, away but Andy knew that he didn’t have the power to do that. More and more these days he felt himself becoming powerless to stop things that were happening in their lives.

They got into the car, both sitting next to one another in the back. Andy didn’t remove his arm from around her shoulders and Dess was grateful for that. She wanted to cry out, to go back to her childhood home and to never leave. She wanted to lay under the oak trees and stare up at the sky, the shadows from the blowing leaves dancing across her face as Moira giggled as she played. Dess would probably never see the Virginia leaves change in the fall ever again nor would she see the snow covered mountains in the dead of winter and it broke her heart. She wanted to stay here-she would give anything to stay here. They couldn’t though and Dess just had to accept that, even though it killed her to do so. She looked to Andy and smiled as she took in the peaceful look that laced his boyish features.

“I love you Andrew Dennis Biersack.” Her voice was peaceful and Andy smiled as he looked down at her. Dess’ face was shining in the sun, but he could see her features cloud over with anger and hurt as they drove away from the only home she had ever known.

“I love you Odessa Annmarie Montgomery…more than I ever thought possible.” He leaned down, his lips were soft against hers and he smirked into their kiss as he saw her eyelids flutter softly at his touch.

The trip to the airport didn’t seem to take as long as Andy remembered it being, but of course everything in his life seemed to be flying by these days. In no time they had gotten through security and were sitting at their gate. The airport, thankfully, wasn’t that crowded and Andy had only been stopped once by some fans and he gladly stood for pictures as Dess waited patiently. Dess was sitting next to him, her beautiful eyes closed and he knew that it was more because she was trying to hold back her tears than it was because she was trying to sleep. He was next to her and as Andy looked down at his notebook, he bit down on his lip ring in frustration. He had song after song going through his brain, but he knew he could never write fast enough to get it all out.

“You working on some new stuff for the album?” Dess asked as she heard Andy huff for what seemed like the millionth time. She knew he could get frustrated with his writing and Dess was hoping that maybe if he talked about it with her that it would make things easier.

“Yeah. We scrapped almost all of the stuff we had written over the winter. I’ve got some stuff running through my head and I just really need to get it all sorted.” That was pretty much Andy’s way of telling Dess that he needed to be left alone. He looked to her, his smile small as he turned back towards his notebook. She sighed softly and took a breath, the anger in her stomach flipping over violently.

Dess just looked at him, her eyes growing soft at his concentrated look and she smiled as she leaned over and placed a small kiss to his throat. They lapsed back into silence and Dess looked around her, finally her gaze falling upon two girls who were sitting a gate over. She felt the tears come to her eyes as these two girls, obviously sisters, were sitting there laughing and chatting while their parents sat nearby. She choked down her tears silently and turned back to Andy, his face was still down in his notebook and he was scribbling away.

There was a small announcement about their flight boarding and Dess shook Andy’s shoulder gently, finally gaining his attention. Grabbing her own bag, Dess moved to get up, stretching her arms over her head as Andy closed his notebook and reached down to grab her hand. She felt her heart beat quicken at his touch and smirked up at him as his blue eyes shined down at her. They shared a quick kiss before getting in line to board and stood there hand in hand while they waited. They boarded the plane in near silence, all Dess could hear was Andy as he mumbled softly to himself all the way down the ramp and all the way to their seats towards the back of the plane.

The couple sat there in silence as the plane settled and the safety speech was given. She rolled her eyes, at this point Dess was a pro at flying and sometimes she wished she could opt out of flights that had to include such a dull spiel. Finally the plane began to take off and her eyes scanned over the cabin. Not many people were on their flight and her and Andy were the only two people sitting in their row. Looking over towards him, Dess felt a pang of jealously over take her as he scribbled away and she wished she felt the inspiration to sketch. Dess watched silently as Andy’s hand flew across the page and Dess felt her heart sink down towards her stomach. Was this going to be a repeat of the last tour that they had been on together?

“I’ll be right back…” Dess said it out loud, even though she knew that Andy wouldn’t hear her because he was so obviously lost in his own world.

“K.” One word from him and with that Dess headed back towards the bathrooms. The rest of the plane seemed to be in a lull, the silence almost deafening but on the inside Dess felt her body screaming.

Dess reached the bathroom and quietly shut and locked the solid looking door behind her. She didn’t really need to use the restroom, but she knew that she needed to get away-away from Andy and away from people in general. She could feel the anger, hot and poisonous, as it threatened to bubble up and boil out from within her stomach. She had just lost her sister and Andy was overly concentrated on his one true love-Music.
Dess was trying to be understanding, but with someone like Andy it was very difficult.

Sighing, Dess looked at herself in the mirror and she cringed at the image that stared back at her. Her eyes were tired, the bags underneath were puffy and purplish as she poked at them gently. She knew she hadn’t been sleeping well and Dess knew that it was causing a lot of her stress and anger towards Andy. She looked up, noticing that it was time to get her hair done again, but Dess no longer felt the joy or excitement about the prospect of getting her hair done. Her fingers reached out, pulling at the pale skin of her cheeks and Dess adverted her eyes down. She had seen enough and she turned away quickly as Dess felt herself take a shaky breath.

“God. No wonder he has no interest in me anymore…” Dess sighed again, pushing her hair back behind her ears as she turned to exit the bathroom. Her fingers fumbled with the lock for a moment and Dess shook her hands, trying to get the shaking of her numb fingers to stop. Finally she was able to unlock the door and push it open as she began to walk back out towards the cabin of the plane.

Dess walked slowly back towards her seat and as she came upon their row she could see the very top of Andy’s head as she approached. Sitting back down, Dess noticed that Andy was still in the same exact spot and position that he had been in when she had left. She sat back down, sighing as she reached under her seat and pulled out her iPod. She looked down at the screen, her fingers brushing over the glass gently and Dess thought of Moira. Her sister had always loved music, even when she was little and Dess used to sing her all of the silly songs that she learned the previous summer at camp. Scanning through her playlists, Dess skipped over anything BVB related and finally found what she was looking for. Dess was soon lost in the soothing tones of Bert’s voice as she shut her eyes and mouthed the words as she drifted off.

Close my eyes and move to the back of my mind
Where worries are washed out to sea
See the changes, people's faces blurred out
Like the sun spots or raindrops
Now all those feelings, those yesterdays feelings will all be lost in time
but today I've wasted away for today is on my mind

Odessa’s dreams were sad and uncomfortable as all she could dream about was her childhood with Moira. Memories flashed past her like pictures in an album and Dess felt herself crumbling as she remembered all of these events. Christmases, Halloween costumes, Birthdays and slumber parties faded across her eyes as she laid there sleeping. Looking back, Dess realized that they had been such a happy family, her and Moira had been lucky in the parents that raised them had, for the most part, let them always be themselves. Moira and her had always been open and carefree as kids, especially Moira and Dess would forever miss her sister and her brash ways of dealing with people. Suddenly everything vanished, including Moira, and Dess felt herself reaching out as she screamed loudly for Moira to come back.

“No!” She tossed her head to the side as Odessa felt someone shaking her.

“Babe! It’s okay. You’re okay…come on, it’s time to go.” Andy was looking down at her, his eyes worried as Dess tried to rub the sleep and tears from her eyes.

Odessa grabbed her bag and followed after Andy silently, her dreams still haunting her senses. They didn’t say much as they grabbed their few bags from the claim area and then headed off to where Andy had a car waiting for them. He held her hand through the entire car ride, but Dess could tell that Andy was still really distracted.

All Odessa wanted was to go home, but as the car pulled up to their apartment building and Dess looked up at the imposing structure she realized something. This didn’t feel like home anymore and Dess feared that it never would.
