We Caught Fire

Crashing Cars

Two days after the funeral and Odessa was outside, rummaging through the garage to try and get rid of some things. She smiled as she came across her old rollerblades and Moira’s bike was still in there as well. Andy was on the other side of the garage and every once in a while she would hear him call out happily as some new piece of Batman memorabilia would come to light. Dess couldn’t help but feel angry, especially at her mother, who had just told her this morning that the house was being placed on the market. Silently Odessa walked out of the garage, wiping her arms across her face as she felt the anger boil within her.

She moved to lean up against their old Caddy, her rage filling her as she looked down at the unfinished car. Moira had loved this car and had begged their father to get it so that the two of them could fix it up. They had managed to repair the paint, but the inside was still a wreck and the engine needed to be replaced. She felt angry at her father then-angry at all of the broken promises that he had left behind. Moving so that she was facing the car, Odessa moved her foot and kicked the front right tire and her eyes grew wide as it bounced and then fell off.

“Fucking perfect…” She muttered angrily as she bent down to pick up the now useless tire. Getting an idea in her head, Dess picked up the tire and launched it towards the dirty windshield.

It felt good to watch as the cracks began to creep across the glass and Dess looked around. Finally her eyes landed on an old tire iron that she had laid to the side and she picked it up. The old metal was warm in her hands from sitting in the sun and Dess gripped it much like a baseball bat. Moving swiftly towards the windshield, she slammed the iron down and felt her blood quicken at the sickening crack that was produced.

“Babe? What’s going on out there?” Andy called from the depths of the garage and Dess just smiled.

“I’m fine…just taking out some aggression…” She smirked as she moved over towards one of the side mirrors and took a whack at it.

The tire iron crashed down against the hood, a large dent forming and Odessa felt lighter. Maybe she needed this? She had felt so angry after the funeral and maybe instead of taking it out on Andy she could it take out on this car. She raised the iron over her head once again and brought it slamming down on to the roof. She took her time, smashing in each and every window as she cursed everything and everyone with each blow. Finally she stopped, her breath coming in short bursts and she saw that Andy was standing in the mouth of the garage, his face shocked as he took everything in.

“Did the car call you a bad name or something?”He laughed as he slowly approached the obviously enraged Dess and moved to grab the tire iron out of her hands.

“Nope. Just felt like beating the shit out of something.” She said, moving away from him as she raised the metal wand over her head and brought it crashing down on the hood once more.

“That’s for taking Moira!” Another smack to the now mostly broken windshield.

“That’s for leaving me alone!” A hard crash was heard as another tire came flying off.

“This! This is for ruining my life and my happiness!” A final crash came as now all of the windows were smashed out and the car was no longer recognizable.

Andy came over, his hands covering hers as she dropped the iron to the ground and turned to him. She didn’t cry, but her head rested against his chest as they both looked over her damage. Andy was glad that Dess had been able to get her anger out and he smiled as he heard the iron clang to the ground and they both began to walk back towards the house. The garage was mostly finished and now the hard part-Moira’s room.

The couple walked into the house, Dess was still out of breath and she felt Andy holding her hand tightly. She didn’t want to do this, but she knew that her mother would just throw everything out and Moira deserved better than that. Silently they walked up the stairs and Dess could feel her hands trembling as she reached out to turn the knob on Moira’s door. The room smelled musty, no one had been in it since they had taken Moira away, but all of her posters still lined the pale yellow walls. Andy moved over to her dresser, running his fingers over a picture frame that held a photo of he and Moira from Christmas time.

“Where do you want to start?” Dess asked, her voice echoing around the room as she looked over towards Andy.

“I’ll go get boxes. Why don’t you take her desk and I’ll hit the closet. I was thinking, if you don’t want her band shirts-the guys and I could sign them and then sell them for charity…” He had wanted to ask Dess about this and now seemed to be the perfect time.

“I really love that idea Andy…” She smiled over at him and moved to sit in Moira’s desk chair.

She flipped through a few magazines on the desk and then threw them into a pile that she decided would be the ‘Trash’ pile. Moira’s laptop still sat on the cold wood and being nosey Odessa opened it and booted it up. Of course it was password protected, but after a few guesses-AndyBVB-she was in and Odessa clicked to see what files Moira had on her computer. Tons of pictures and Odessa felt a strange sensation come to her stomach as she saw that Moira had all of the pictures from her old photo album hidden in a folder marked ‘Sweet Revenge’. What?

Finally it clicked and Odessa cried out as she felt her heart break; Moira had been the one who had started everything this past winter on tumblr. She had uploaded all of those old pictures and put them out there so that people could ridicule Dess. Her heart hurt as she scanned over the computer screen and holding back tears, Dess clicked to open another folder. This one was labeled ‘BVBFF’ and as she opened it Dess’ eyes grew wide.

“Did you know that Moira wrote fanfiction about you guys?” She asked, hearing Andy’s footsteps behind her.

“No…” He placed the boxes down and came to stand behind Dess.

“Do you even read your own fanfiction?” She asked him, smirking up at him as he shuddered.

“Yeah…Andley is a thing and I find it kind of weird but whatever.” He moved over towards the closet then and as Andy began to pull clothes out he felt sad. Moira had really loved his band, every shirt that he pulled out had his face on it.

“She was also the one who posted all of my old pictures up online…” Odessa said and Andy felt his heart stop. Shit…she was never supposed to find that out.

“Oh? How do you know?” He asked, his voice curious as she turned to look at him.

“I found a file and put two and two together…you knew didn’t you.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement and Andy came over and stood silently infront of Dess.

“I don’t believe this…” She glared up at him and he kneeled down, his lips connecting with hers softly.

“She told me right before she died. She felt so ashamed Dess…she was only being a teenager when she did it. You know they don’t think about long term consequences…”Andy hoped that Dess wouldn’t be too angry with him. He couldn’t blame her if she was though.

“God!” She huffed and turned back towards the desk.

The couple worked in silence, Andy cleaned out most of the things in the closet, but left things hanging to see what Dess wanted to do. Odessa had moved from the desk, throwing most things out, and was now unpinning all of Moira’s posters and rolling them up. Andy had a good idea with having all of the band sign shirts and posters and then selling them, donating everything to cancer research and so Dess was extra careful when she began to take things down. Andy laughed suddenly and as Dess turned to face him she laughed too. He was standing there, a Justin Timberlake shirt held up to his chest.

“Really? You sure this wasn’t yours?” He asked as he tossed the shirt to her and she placed it in the ‘Trash’ pile.

“Uh yeah. I was never into JT…I was more of an Eminem kind of girl.” She laughed, scrunching her nose up at that embarrassing memory.

“You’re joking.” His face was deadpan and Dess just smiled.

“I’m afraid not…I used to know every lyric. I probably still could rap if I tried hard enough.” She laughed and moved over to stand in front of Andy.

“Why the change? I mean rap is such a great creative outlet…” His voice was sarcastic and she smiled against his skin as she moved to kiss his neck.

“My older cousin Ronnie got me into Linkin Park, which I liked because it had some rap in it and then I moved from that to better things. Now look where I am…” She kissed him then, their lips smiling against one another before pulling apart.

“I am pretty spectacular…” He held his hands up and Andy laughed as Dess rolled her eyes at him.

“God your ego should have its own press agent…” He laughed as she teased him and they turned back to working.

“Uh Dess?” She turned then and felt sad as she saw what Andy held in his hands. It was a huge teddy bear, probably close to half the size of Andy and Dess could remember winning that for Moira even now.

“Moira begged me to win that for her at our county fair a few years ago. I spent probably over a hundred bucks at this booth and finally the guy behind the counter gave it to us out of pity.” She smiled over at him, the memory in her head making her happy and yet she felt sad all the same.

“It’s wearing a shirt with my face on it…” He smirked over at her and Dess did finally notice that Moira had dressed the bear in a too small BVB shirt.

“You knew she was obsessed…” Dess just smiled over at Andy as she moved to the middle of the room and looked around, her hands resting on her hips.

“What are you thinking babe?” He came to her, his arms wrapping around her waist as he rested his chin on her shoulder.

“I can’t think of anything else we need to do…” Her voice was sad and Andy just wrapped his arms around her even more tightly.

“What about your things? When did you want to pack that up?” He asked, his breath warm against her neck and Odessa turned to face him.

“I don’t know. It just makes me so furious that she would sell this house, knowing that it was the place that we grew up…” She felt the anger rising in her again and Odessa had to work really hard to keep it under control.

“It’s probably just as hard for her to sell this place as it is for you to think about Dess…” He knew that that wasn’t true, but Andy had to be even in his feelings towards Rose and her actions.

Odessa just shook her head and Andy could see the tears come to her eyes as she moved away from him. He watched as she walked out of the room silently and he quickly followed her, coming to a stop once he reached the doorway to her room. Dess was in there, he could hear her soft crying as she began to dig through her own things and all Andy could do was join her. He knew it was hard for Dess to think about not having this house to come back to, but he was hopeful that it being sold would make Dess more open to maybe getting a place with him.

“So would you ever want to buy a house with me?” Andy asked, the silence in the room broken. Dess was unpinning her once beloved posters and she smiled as she turned to him.

“I dunno. Some mansion in LA? You know that’s really not my style.” She laughed, her voice light as he came to her.

“Doesn’t have to be.” His arms wrapped around her shoulders, his fingers making gentle trails down her back.

“Oh, so you want a small farmhouse like this one? Don’t think they have houses like that out West.” She giggled against his neck and Andy smiled. He had desperately missed this part of life with Dess and he was happy to have it back.

“I never said we always have to live in LA Dess.” Andy smiled softly down at her.

They stayed like that for a bit. Soon enough the couple had finished packing both rooms up and now they began to pack their own things for the trip back to LA. Andy knew that Dess didn’t want to leave, especially since this would be the last time she would be in her childhood home.

Andy knew that somehow, someway, he was going to save her memories. Every last one of them.
