Church Is In Session **COMPLETED**

I'm Nobody's Hero

Andy POV

Catherine got up and left me to ponder over what she knew I was keeping form her. How could I tell her such a huge thing? How would she take it? It nearly killed her when Esther was stabbed when they first got here. I got every one’s eyes on me as I watched Catherine storm off.

“Don’t even think about it.” Jake warned. He took my side in this and wanted to try and get Esther back without letting Catherine know what really happened.

“I know…I just hate keeping this from her.” I trailed off.

“You keep the Esther thing away from her.” I regretted telling Coma about my…incident with Esther.

I didn’t even know how I would have even looked at Esther that way now. All I saw was Catherine. And I was now keeping two huge secrets from her. I knew I would never let her know about what happened with Esther and me but I was starting to think that she needed to know about what was happening now.

“Wait, what Esther thing?” Ashley asked.

“Nothing,” Coma and I spoke up at once.

“Andy, the camp deserves to know what is happening.” Jake said.

“I plan church today but all I will tell them is about the disappearance of Esther.” I had told Coma not to set off the bells and let the camp go about their lives without knowing the war that was taking place just outside their front doors.

“When?” Zain asked swallowing his last bite of food.

I was surprised that he wasn’t more distressed about this whole thing. I could see that he was trying desperately to keep in his pain. “Now.”

I stood and walked toward the auditorium telling Coma to set off the bells to bring the people in for church. Zain followed me to the front of the auditorium, like he normally did, and took his place in a chair behind the podium. I watched as people began to flood the room filling up every available seat. I darted my eyes from person to person looking for a face I knew wouldn’t come. I rested my hands on the edges of the podium and watched as Jinxx closed the doors without Catherine.

I took a deep breath and began church. “We’ve had a rough few last months. Most of us have not been introduced to the harm. Some of us have…had a few losses.” I paused to think about how I was going to phrase the next sentence. “About a week ago Louis came back into camp…and was injured.” How was I going to tell them that his abdomen was slit all the way across? “We have had yet another form of loss. A few months ago we had two new additions to our camp. Their names are Catherine and Esther. Since their arrival they have had several close calls with life. We have stopped that but now…Esther has gone missing. I would love to think that she just moved camps, but I worry for her safety. We will fight against all odds to reclaim what we have here. The tears we’ve cried won’t be an abandoned river.” The crowd nodded and mumbled in agreement. I looked up to the door to see Catherine walk in and stand beside Jinxx. “We will fight for what’s right. Reclaim our freedom!” I raised my fist in the air and the crowd mimicked. A smile spread across my face. I looked at Catherine and she immediately turned the other way and walked back out of the auditorium. “But…for now we must keep living like we have. Give bread to those families that have nothing. Invite wonders into your home for the night. Give the homeless shelter. We will destroy F.E.A.R. But first we must destroy the monsters in our own home.”

Like at the end of most church sessions people would come to me and ask questions about how I thought we were going to kill F.E.A.R. I had no answer for them but I was able to give the people I could some glimpse of hope.

When walking back home I spotted Catherine and ran over to her. “Hey, come home tonight, please.” I rested my hands on her shoulders.

She tried to shrug them off but stopped. “I just want safety, that’s all I’ve ever wanted.” Tears began to trickle down her face. I wiped the first one with my thumb but that seemed to bring more. “I want to feel safe with you but now that I know you’re lying to me about Ez I don’t feel safe in your arms.”

“Cat…” I could feel my eyes swelling up. I needed to tell her.

“No, I…” when the tears had become too much she walked away from me and toward her house.

I wanted her to trust me. I wanted to tell her everything. But her knowing the truth would hurt her more than when I was lying to her now. She may have not needed me, but I needed her.

Jinxx POV

Andy was doing the wrong thing keeping a secret like this from Catherine. But I understood him. If he wanted her to be in the dark and risk her getting more hurt in the process then so be it. In my experience the person in the dark always goes out to try and receive information on said subject. In the end they always get what they ask for if not more. In the ‘if not more’ sense it usually comes with pain or even death. I didn’t want Catherine to get hurt just as much as Andy didn’t. But f he was not going to tell her by the end of the week I was. She deserved to know what had happened to her best friend.

“What you thinkin’ about?” Ashley asked when church had started.

I shook my head coming out of my day dream and whispered back, “nothing.”

Andy kept talking about the stuff he normally did, his words brought the people hope. He showed them that not all people need to suffer as they do. “Like hell,” Ashley whispered.

“What?” I asked.

“Something’s up,” he pushed for an answer he already knew.

“It’s just the Esther thing Andy is…”

Catherine walked through the door cutting off my sentence. “What?” She asked when Ashley and I practically starred her down.

“Nothing,” Ashley said turning away first.

I held my stare for a few more seconds then turned my attention to Andy. When I saw Catherine turn away at Andy’s stare I had to say something. “He’s just trying to keep you safe. He doesn’t want to hurt you more than you already are.”

Although I didn’t agree with Andy I couldn’t let him loose the love of his life. “I know…”She walked out of the auditorium.

Someone had to tell her. And I was going to make sure it would be Andy.
