Tunnel Vision
Is it odd to tell you that ever since Esther went missing I would sleep in her bed instead of mine and Andy’s? Well if it is then I don’t do it…
It has been a few days since she had disappeared with no one to say where she had even gone. She had left without a trace. All the guys were able to tell me was that she will be back and not to worry, that they would find her. All I got from that was that F.E.A.R. had taken her or she left knowing that she would bring harm to whatever Andy had built here. If that was the case I thought of her as a selfish bitch. What was I saying? She wouldn’t just leave me without a goodbye. Would she?
Coma and Andy shrugged me off every time I had asked what they had thought had happened to Esther, that told me they knew something…and I wanted to know what they knew. Andy had convinced me to sleep with him last night even though I wanted to sleep in Esther’s bed. I woke to hearing Andy whispering in the bedroom.
“WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEEN!” I heard, what I thought was, Coma whisper a yell.
“I can’t just sit here and lie to her! We need to do something before she figures out what happened.” Andy’s voice chimed in.
I shuffled in the sheets trying to cover my eyes. I heard shuffling of feet an even more shushed voice of what I was sure was Coma. “We can’t risk something happening to just keep Kitty out of this.”
Even when they’re not talking to me they call me Kitty…wait…keep me out of what? “I want to tell her trust me…” Andy stopped midsentence when I shuffled under the sheets.
I cursed myself as I heard them walk out of the bedroom. Not wanting them to keep talking behind my back, I quickly jumped out of bed and entered the living area.
“Oh, hey Coma, what are you doing here?” I asked while rubbing my eyes as if I had just woken up.
“Morning, Kitty I was asking Andy about…”
“He was asking if we wanted to have breakfast with him, Ashley, Jake, and Jinxx.” Andy finished his sentence.
Coma shot a look at Andy saying ‘what?!’ Then Coma looked back to me with an obvious fake smile. “Yeah. what he said.”
“Sounds like fun.” I smiled back.
“Well get dressed then.” Andy said.
I threw on a new pair of pants and an old shirt. I tied my hair up in a messy ponytail. I re-entered the living area to find Ashley and Jake. I raised my hands to my shoulders questioning where Jinxx was. Ashley responded with a confused shake of his head. Coma elbowed him in the chest and stepped forward.
“Ready for food?” Coma asked.
“You’re going to get food without me?!” Zain chimed in.
“Not anymore,” Andy said wrapping one arm around my waist.
I leaned into his shoulder and we all walked to the court yard. It felt like a small army walking toward the court yard laughing about whatever joke Ashley cracked or when I punched Jake in the stomach after he called me ‘Kitty’ again. Zain dragged me to Cho and got me the morning special. We sat with the rest of the gang and when I entered the conversation they all stopped talking. Was everyone in on Andy and Coma’s secret?
I couldn’t stand not being inside the loop. “What?” I asked when I got 8 eyes on me as I sat down beside Andy.
They all looked away at once. “Nothing,” was mumbled under their breaths.
What was the secret? I wanted to know what it was. I could figure out that it wasn’t a good one and it had to do with Esther. I gave Andy a questioning look but he shrugged it off and pecked me on the cheek.
“Don’t worry about the ‘Kitty’ thing too much.” He whispered in my ear.
I leaned closer to his ear so I could respond. “I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about what you’re keeping from me.”
His eyebrows narrowed, I shook my head wanting to know. I grabbed my plate, stood up, and left Andy and everyone else to eat without me. I threw my plate away and decided to take a walk to reflect on what had happened since Esther and I came here. I was mid thought when I found myself at the entrance of the camp. I glanced out toward the empty desert that surrounded the camp. Just beyond that was what all of us feared…F.E.A.R. My mouth dropped at the worst thought that came to my head. The worst secret that Andy could keep from me.
