I Grew From Those Who Hate Me
We’ve been on Warped for about a week now. I’ve become really good friends with CC, but that’s pretty much it. Ashley is always hitting on me, but I shouldn’t have expected any different. Me and Andy talk a lot, but it’s usually just small talk and I trust Jake a lot, not as much as I do Jinxx though. Jake and Andy know about my self harm issue since they kinda found me doing it… They promised not to tell CC or Ashley though. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Ella’s gonna be on the rest of the tour with us. She got a break from modeling for a while, so she gets to spend the rest of summer with Jake. I’m actually kinda happy that I get to meet her.
“Jake! Wake up you lazy ass!” Andy yells into Jake’s bunk. Jake just hits Andy with his pillow.
“Fine, I guess we won’t go pick up Ella from the airport then.” Andy teases. Jake pushes Andy to the floor and gets out of his bunk.
“Why’d you have to wake me up now, though? We have to take the bus to the airport which is 20 minutes away. You could’ve let me sleep until we got there.”
“But that wouldn’t have been any fun”
“Would you two shut up!? Jinxx is still trying to sleep!” Jinxx yells at them
“Sorry” Jake and Andy whisper yell.
I’ve been up for like an hour so I was just sitting and playing Xbox, laughing at how strange they are.
I really like it here with them. It’s much better than what I had to go through in my hometown. Speaking of my hometown, guess where Warped Tour is today? There are so many bad memories in this town and not a lot of good ones. We stop at Waffle House for breakfast before picking up Ella since she said she’s already eaten.
“Yay! Waffles!!” CC yells as he runs off the bus.
“You have to put a shirt on first or they won’t let you in” Jinxx yells at him.
CC sulks back onto the bus and puts a shirt on.
“Yay! Waffles!” CC yells, running off the bus again.
We walk into the restaurant and walk to a table. As we walk past one table, someone punches my arm. Heather… We sit down.
“I’m gonna wait on the bus” I whisper to Jinxx.
“Why?”
“Because Heather’s in here.”
“Don’t worry about her. You’ve got us now; and besides, it’s not like she’s gonna start a scene in a restaurant.”
“Fine…” I say
We eat quickly so that Ella doesn’t have to wait too long for us. We get up and walk out of the restaurant… and so does Heather… The guys don’t even notice her. They’re getting on the bus and Heather pulls me back by my shoulder.
“Look who came back” She teases with that stupid smile on her face.
“I’m here because I’m on tour and this just happens to be one of the shows. Now let me leave so we’re not late to the airport to pick up one of our friends.” I say calmly
“You know they’re not your friends, right? They’re just pretending.”
“I don’t care if they are just pretending. They’re the closest thing to family I’ve ever had.”
She punches me in the face just as Jinxx walks off the bus to see what’s taking me so long. He stops and then runs over to me. I have a bloody nose, but that’s all.
“You bitch!” He yells at her and then hits her. The surprised look on her face is hysterical.
“What’s wrong, Val, can’t fight back by yourself? You need this fake friend to defend you?” She teases.
“You know I can hurt you since I’ve done it before. You’re helpless without your little group to defend you” I say
“Then why don’t you fight back”
“Because I refuse to drop down to your level.”
“You’re no fun anymore. I liked you much more when you’d just lie on the ground while I hit you.”
I can see that Jinxx is getting angry.
“Just get out of the way, asshole” I say. She refuses to move so I punch her in the stomach and knock her over on her back.
“You’re lucky that I like to avoid fighting” I say and walk past her.
She gets up and grabs my wrist as I’m walking away, causing me to fall to the ground. The guys had just gotten out of the bus in time to see this happen. Jake grabs her and holds her away from me while Andy helps me up. My wrist is in so much pain and I can’t move it. CC is trying to keep Ashley from hitting her and Jinxx is just standing there all tensed up.
“You’re gonna be sorry when I find you without your fake friends around to help you” She screams
That sentence causes Jinxx to walk up to her and punch her in the jaw. He then walks over to me and hugs me.
“Don’t believe her. We’re not pretending. I love you more than anything” He whispers.
Me and Jinxx walk on to the bus and I tell him that I can’t move my wrist. He tells Jon to drop us off at the hospital before picking up Ella. The rest of the guys get on the bus.
“Jinxx, what was that about?” Andy asks
“That’s the girl who helped make her life hell” He answers
“I know that, but why’d you punch her? You know that’s illegal.”
“She can call the cops if she wants. No one can hurt Valerey and get away with it.”
Andy stops asking questions. I guess he figures he shouldn’t mess with Jinxx while he’s in this mood. Jon tells us that we’re stopping at the hospital to drop Jinxx and me off before heading to the airport.
On the way to the hospital, Jinxx is just sitting on the couch looking kinda distant. I poke his side and ask what’s wrong.
“You wouldn’t have gotten hurt if I had stayed next to you” he answers.
“Come on, don’t blame this on yourself. You had no control over what happened.”
He nods
I kiss him. “I love you so much. I know you’re not pretending” I say and he hugs me.
The bus drops us off and we head to the E.R. We wait in the waiting room for like an hour before the rest of the guys and Ella show up.
“What took so long?” Jinxx asks
“Ella’s flight was late so we had to wait a while.” Jake answers
“It’s a good thing this is our day off.” I say.
“Uhm… Valerey” some nurse calls my name. Me and Jinxx go back and everyone else stays in the waiting room. They take an x-ray of my wrist and then come back after a long while and tell me that my wrist is broken. Yay!.... So we wait for another hour for them to get the stuff ready to make the cast. Overall we were in the E.R for almost 4 hours.
“So it was broken? You didn’t seem to be in any pain at all, though, when I helped you up.” Andy says as we walk out to the bus.
I shrug my shoulders “High pain tolerance I guess”
“First day back in America and already had a trip to the E.R” Ella jokes. Her voice is so cute.
“Let’s get lunch!” CC says and runs to the bus.
We walk to the bus slowly to irritate CC.
“Hurry up guys” he yells
We get on the bus and head for a Burger King. Once we get there everyone gets off and I tell Jinxx I’m gonna lay down in the bunk.
“Aren’t you hungry, though? We were in there for a while and you hardly ate breakfast.”
“No, I’m good.”
“Alright… see you in a little while, then”
I go to the bunk area and lay in mine and Jinxx’s bunk. I pull out my razor blade from behind my phone’s battery and make a few cuts on my upper arm before I hear someone get on the bus. I put the blade away quickly, just in time for Jinxx to open up the curtain.
“What’re you doing here? Didn’t you eat?” I ask
“I ordered my food to go. I brought you a chicken wrap since I know you like them.”
“Thanks, but you didn’t have to.”
“You need to eat something.”
“I’m not hungry, though.”
Jinxx sighs. “Fine. I guess I wouldn’t be up to eating either if I had just broken my wrist”
He puts the bag on the floor and lays down beside me.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“Nah, I don’t feel hungry all of a sudden.”
We lie there and talk for a while before I fall asleep. I wake up to my phone ringing. Jinxx is still asleep, so I answer it quietly.
“Hello?” I whisper into the phone
“Hey, bitch”
My heart sinks. “Heather?”
“Surprised? Don’t think you’re getting off so easy.”
Jinxx stirs. I must’ve woken him up.
“What’s wrong, Val?” he asks
“Um, nothing” I say. I get up and walk to the bathroom.
“What the hell do you want?” I say
“To make your life hell” she smirks
“You accomplished that in high school, so will you please leave me alone.”
“But it’s so much fun to torment you. By the way, did you ever find your parents?”
“I wasn’t looking”
“What a shame. I’d love to see how they’d react when they saw you again.”
“I’m not planning on finding them, so better give up on that dream.”
“Aw, but I know where they’re at” she pouts
“You do?” I ask, suddenly interested.
“I’ll just tell them you don’t want to see them…”
“If you know where they’re at, then tell me”
“Why don’t I just bring you to them?”
I think for a minute. “Fine. Meet me at Burger King”
“Which one?”
“The one close to the school. You’d better hurry, though, because we’re probably leaving soon”
“Will do”
This is a bad idea, isn’t it? I walk out of the bathroom and back to the bunk.
“Who was that?” Jinxx asks
“It was Dylen” I reply “He wants me to go for a walk with him”
“Alright”
“He’s coming here and we’re gonna walk around the block, so I may be gone a while”
“Alright. There’s a park near here, so you guys head over there after your walk and me, Ella and the guys will be there”
I head out the bus door just as Heather pulls into the parking lot. I walk over to her and open the passenger side door. I get in and we drive off.
“They’re near by right?” I ask
“Yea, real close”
I have a really bad feeling about this.
We pull up at an old strip mall.
“Why’re we here?” I ask
“This is where your parents told me to meet them”
Soon after we arrive, another car pulls up. Is this really them? I’m getting really nervous. A bunch of girls get out of the car. Oh god… I should’ve known this was coming… How could I be so stupid?
Heather grabs a hold of my arms and holds me still. Who knew she’d still be friends with these idiots even after high school ended. The other 2 girls start hitting me and when Heather’s sure I can’t fight back, she lets go of me and I fall to the ground. Heather kicks me in the stomach and I cough up blood. Everything gets blurry and then goes black. When I wake up they’ve already left. I check my phone and see that it’s been more than an hour since I left the bus and I have three missed calls and 33 texts.
I call Jinxx
“Valerey, are you okay?” he answers after the first ring.
“Uh, yea”
“Where are you? I texted Dylen and he said he didn’t even know you were back in Ohio”
“I’m a fucking idiot…”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because I believed Heather when she said she knew where my parents were”
“Where are you? I’m with Dylen and we’ve been searching everywhere for you.”
“Tell Dylen that I’m at the old strip mall where Emily got killed. He’ll know what you’re talking about.”
I hear him tell Dylen and then Dylen yells “She’s there?!”
“We’re coming to get you. Dylen said to stay hidden until you see a car pull in that flashes its headlights.”
“Alright” I say and then hang up.
Heather was probably hoping that she’d kill me here. This place is scary. I go and hide behind one of the pillars. A little while later a car pulls up, but it didn’t flash its headlights. I tense up hoping it’s not someone who’s planning another murder or rape at this place. As soon as a man steps out of the car, another car pulls up and flashes its headlights. The man gets back in his car and drives off to the other side of the parking lot. I stand up and run over to the car. Jinxx hugs me as soon as I reach him.
“Nothing happened, right? You feel fine?” Dylen asks quickly
“Other than being beat until I fainted, no.” I answer
“Thank god” He says
“What’s wrong with this place that has you so worried, Dylen”
“They closed the mall down after some crazy guy killed a girl named Emily. This happened like 12 years ago or something, but after they closed it, this became a place for people to kill someone or rape them or other horrible stuff like that. Everyone thinks that the person killing people here is the same person who killed Emily since he never got caught. They’re always killed in the same way, too, so that’s another reason people think it’s the same person. I think in the 12 years since Emily’s death there have been 4 murders. That’s why I was driving so quickly to get here.”
“And then there’s the legend that says if you come here and don’t commit a crime that something bad will happen within a week” I say
“Well that’s creepy… Let’s go” Jinxx says
Me and Jinxx sit in the back while Dylen drives us back to the bus.
“Nothing hurts too bad does it?” Jinxx asks
“Not really. I mean, I feel sick, but that could just be because I coughed up blood or because I passed out”
“That’s good, I guess”
We get back to the bus and the guys and Ella all hug me.
“Thank god you’re okay” Jake says
“Yea… can I go back to the bunks? I’m pretty tired.”
Jinxx picks me up bridal style
“I can walk, ya know” I say, laughing
“But you’re tired”
“Ugh, fine”
He laughs at me and then sets me down in the bunk. He climes in after me and wraps his arms around me.
“I’m glad you’re okay” he whispers.
“I was so stupid to believe her”
“No you weren’t. She told you she knew where your parents were. What person wouldn’t believe someone when they say that?’
“If you say so…”
He smiles “I love you, Valerey”
“I love you too, Jeremy”
We lie there and talk until almost 9. We stop and CC yells “Food!”
“You hungry?” Jinxx asks
I shake my head “I just wanna sleep”
“Alright”
I snuggle into his chest and within minutes I fall asleep. Tomorrow I get to play Warped with BVB as a guitarist fill in for Jinxx while he plays violin.
