Fight for F.E.A.R.

Deaths Invitation

Audrey's POV
Surely I must be dead by now, if not I hope it comes soon. I don't know how long it's been, but something is carrying me. I'm too weak to even open my eyes or make a pathetic cry for help. I'm in unbearable pain from the wound in the side of my body. I can feel the warm ooze of my blood leaking down my side and dripping off my back. The wind is blowing again and I can feel the sand grazing my face and the sun burning my exposed flesh. I can now hear the sound of shouting, but I can't make out what is being said, and I can hear the sound of pounding feet, running feet. I pray it's not the shadow warriors returning. I've suffered enough pain. I'm passed into someone else arms. I can feel a hand on my neck.
"She's not dead, Andy." a deep voice says.
"She's so close, Jake, I doubt she will survive the night. Keep an eye on her, you know what to do...if things get...if they turn dark. Find her a cot in the infirmary shelter," replies an even deeper, rougher voice.

"Got it," the first voice says. They are walking with me. The light is shaded from my eyes and I am rested on what I believe is a bed. A gentle hand carresses the side of my face. "Maria?"
"Yes, Mourner?" a quiet voice answers.
"Can you help me? This one is still alive. She was found by the Prophet. A shadow warrior attacked her."
"Of course, sir. Let me fetch some water and we can cleanse her wounds."
"Very well, thank you," the man replied. I could hear him sigh. My body is lifted by my back, and I wish I could scream at the agony it causes in my side. The cloak is removed from under me. A smooth, warm hand pulls the fabric of my tank top up from my waist and peels it away from the dried blood, removing it completely by ripping the shoudler of it and pulling it away. A set of footsteps return. "Maria, look at this, this is one of the worst I've seen."
"Oh my. This poor girl, I almost pray that she passes. This is one bad wound," the woman says.
"I don't know, let's at least try. The Prophet was very clear in doing our best to revive her."
"I know, master. We've lost many in the recent weeks. Let's get this clean and bandaged."

A wet rag is run over the wound. I try my best to react, flinch, move away from the intense burning it creates. I can't move. I don't have any strength left. "Master, she's still bleeding."
"I see. Wait a moment, I have an idea," the man says, I believe he was referred to as Jake. "Jinxx! Jinxx! Come here!" he yells. I can hear someone running.
"What? What happened?" a new male voice says.
"Come with me, I need you to do something," I assume the man name Jake says. I hear a gasp. "We can't stop the bleeding. Could you possibly burn the veins lightly to stop them? Make them close?"
"I can...try I guess. I've never done that," the news voice says.

Burn my veins? Just let me die! Let me die! I scream in my head. I hear the igniting of a flame. A burning, worse than I've ever experienced comes over my side. A quiet groan escapes my lips and the warmth disappears, leaving only pain in its place. "She's still with us, Masters," Maria replies.
A warm hand takes mine in its grip. "Please stay with us. We are trying everything we can," Jake says.
"Man, I doubt she can even hear you," the unknown man says.
"She's different, Jinxx. She seems like a fighter."
"She has something in her hand, Jake," I'm guessing this new voice is Jinxx. Odd name.
Not releasing my right hand, a pair of fingers prey open my left palm, stealing the rosary from my grasp.
"Jinxx, it's a Legion pentastar charm." Jake whispers.
"How would she have this? Only men of the Legion have this," Jinxx replies confused.
"I don't know, maybe this is why the Shadow was after her."
"I need to go check on the camp, Jake. Maria, take care," Jinxx says. I hear a canvas flap rustle.

"Maria, let's bandage this since it's stopped bleeding. I'll stay with her for the night. That way if...you know...I can help her," Jake says, strain in his voice.
"Yes, Mourner. I have the bandages right here."
A pair of fragile, shaking hands place a cotton feeling bandage over the wound in the right side of my ribs and another pair lift me, like I was carried, and I feel the bandage being wrapped around my torso, over my sport bra, and finally being sealed down with what I assume is heated wax like we do in our village. Well did...
"Thank you, Maria. Your services are no longer required," Jake says quietly.

I drift in and out of consciousness for I don't even know how long. I am only vaguely aware of my surroundings, still not being able to open my eyes. I can distinguish the voice of Jake, and the voice of Maria, as she checks on Jake every so often. I am aware of the warm pressure of Jakes hands, holding mine, and the beads of the rosary between our palms.
"I don't even know your name," Jake whispers. "I don't even know if you can hear me. I really hope you survive the night. I've buried so many recently. The soldiers of F.E.A.R. are getting closer to discovering us every day. I hate seeing so many die. There's disease, starvation, although its more disappointing to see those who die from losing hope. Things will hopefully get easier soon. Andy keeps speaking about a Matriach, and that she will appear to us soon, and then we will be able to fight F.E.A.R. I just don't see how we can ever win this war..." his voice faded off. He held my hand a little tighter. "It's horrible seeing how they don't even question harming a beautiful young woman like you." I feel cloth over my body, and I am grateful at the warmth it brings. "I'll get a fire started in here, and hopefully we don't lose you tonight." I can feel a pair of soft warm lips on my forehead and my hand is released, it falls to dangle off the side of the bed, the rosary resting in my fingers.

Its very quiet for a few moments. I can hear nothing. I've never had it be this quiet before. Am I dying? Is this the end? I am relieved as I hear footsteps.
"You're really going to stay with her all night? Im serious, Jake. She won't survive. That wound is horrible. I don't know why you and CC think she's something special, I know shes pretty, but no woman could survive that wound. Even if she lives, she will be in extreme pain and will probably die of it getting infected. Don't get your hopes up," Another man said.
"Here, let me at least make this more comfortable for you," Jinxx said. I could suddenly hear the roar of a flame, and the crackling of wood. A glowing heat licked at my body. I was freezing, and the heat was wonderful for my cold limbs.
"Shut up, Ashley. I know I'm the Mourner, but I'm tired of losing so many. It was hard enough losing Ella..." the pain in Jakes voice was almost like getting re-stabbed. "Jinxx, you are so lucky to still have your Sammi. I feel horrible for Andy. When Juliet was taken by the soldiers during that attack last year, I thought he would surely go mad."
"It's been a horrible road, Jake. We don't even know which Wild Ones, if any are alive in the tower..." the man, Ashley said. "Jake are you OK?"

"Her breathing..." Jake whispered. I could feel his hand holding mine. Another hand spread across my partially exposed chest and covered the skin over my heart. I realized my breathing was coming in short gasps. I tried to control it but it was impossible.
"Jake...just let her go. Help her." Ashley said.
"Jake...it's probably time. Just give her the peace she needs. At least she will die peacefully and not in the horrific pain Id image she's in right now," Jinxx said as his voice came closer.
"You're right," Jake said, his voice cracking. He pulled in a deep breath and placed his other hand on the side of my face. I could feel the tension in his fingers. He sighed and a warm tingling feeling began to slowly spread through my body. My pain began to fade. My breathing eased and became shallow. The pressure of his hands faded as well. I felt like I was falling in a black abyss, like getting lost in a sheet of black velvet, soft and inviting, but suffocating at the same time. Peace...peace...heaven.
