Picture Perfect?

DEVLIN'S POV :

"Hey , babe , you need to wake up !"
"Don't want to ." , I hear from underneath the comforter , and he tightens his grip on the pillow .
"All right , then , I guess I'll just have to go see Dr . Hong without you , then , and you can wait until the delivery to find out if we have a boy or a girl ." , I inform him .
He pops up from the bed like a jack in the box , yelling , "Okay , I'm up , I'm up ! Give me five minutes !"
I can't stop myself from laughing as I tell him , "Slow down , babe , you have a little more time than that ! Why don't you go grab a shower , and I'll put together some breakfast as soon as I finish getting dressed ."
He sits up on the edge of the bed and grins at me , saying , "I like what you're wearing right now just fine , love ."
"I'm sure you do , my dearest pervert , but I can't go to the doctor in just my bra and panties , you know . Besides , it's a bad idea in general to cook in the semi - nude ."
He just keeps grinning at me , and crooks his finger , so I walk over to the bed , and he slides his arm around the small of my back , then rubs his other hand gently over my stomach .
"Good morning , Sprout !" , he says , placing several kisses along my belly . "I'm sorry if I disturbed you last night , but I missed Mommy a lot while I was gone ."
"Honestly , Ashley ! I hope you're not gonna keep up with THAT habit later ! There's such a thing as being too honest with a kid !"
"Of course not !" , he says , as he heads for the shower . "After he's born , I won't be interfering with his space . Or hers ."
"You are incorrigible !" , I yell through the bathroom door as I finish getting dressed ."Sometimes I think I'm gonna wind up with TWO kids ."
I go downstairs , feed the dogs , and make some scrambled eggs with cheese and some green onions , and a piece of Nutella toast with tiny marshmallows on top .
Ash walks into the kitchen just as I'm putting the eggs on his plate , and sort of shakes his head when he sees my toast .
"I don't know how you can stand all that stuff , I practically go into a diabetic coma just looking at it ."
" I'm not sure myself , but it could be worse . You know my receptionist , Mindy , right ? She was telling me the other day that when her sister was pregnant she absolutely stuffed herself with sardines dipped in guacamole ." , I reply .
"Geez , Dev , not while I'm eating !" , he groans , and I giggle .
We finish eating , and go to the car to head out for my appointment . As we're driving , he asks , " Are you hoping more for one or the other ?"
"Not really , I'm cool either way . Are you ?"
He seems to think about it for a few seconds , then says , "Honestly , it changes from one day to the next . One day , I think I'd like to have a boy , so we can do all that father - son stuff together , then the next day I keep picturing a miniature version of you that I can spoil rotten and treat like a little princess . But really , either one is fine , all I really care about is that he or she is healthy and all in one piece ."
We finally pull into the parking lot of the medical complex , and I lead Ash through the building to my doctor's office . Were sit in the waiting room for a while , then the nurse calls us back . He stands back while she checks my weight and all the other standard stuff , then leads us into the ultrasound room to wait for the doctor .
A few minutes later , Dr . Hong walks in , saying , "Good morning , Devlin , and I'm assuming this is our father - to - be ?"
"Yes , it is . Dr . Hong , this is my husband , Ashley . Ash , this is Dr . Hong ."
After they exchange pleasantries , she has me get up on the table thingy and hike up my shirt . Ash is standing next to me , with his hand on my shoulder , watching her pick up a large tube .
"What's that for ?" , he inquires .
"This is a gel that I'll be putting on your wife , it helps with the reading on the ultrasound device ." , she tells him .
She then squirts a large dollop into her hand and says , "Devlin , this is probably going to be cold ." , and then she starts smearing it on my stomach . And it most definitely is .
"She slimed me !" , I say to Ash , with a giggle .
"Do you feel funky ?" , he chuckles in response .
Dr . Hong chuckles a bit herself , then picks up something that looks sort of like a bar - code scanner and starts sweeping it over my stomach , instructing us to look at the computer screen . After several seconds , an image appears on the screen , and we can see the shape of a little person , curled up almost into a ball .
"Is it okay for him , or her , to be so small ?" Ash inquires .
"Mr . Purdy , it's perfectly fine . She's only midway through the second trimester , and most of the growth will take place during the third . I don't see anything for you to worry about ."
She moves the thing around to the other side , and points to the monitor , saying , "A - ha , here we are ! Take a look right here ."
We look more closely , and see what she's trying to point out . "Congratulations , folks , you're having a ..."
"He's a boy !" , Ash bursts out . "Do you see that , darlin' ? He's actually real !"
"I could've told you that ! If he wasn't real , I think I'd notice ."
"You know what I mean ! He's not an 'it' , or a 'fetus' , or whatever , he's actually a HE now !"
After thinking about it for a second , I understand the point he's trying to make . We can actually say "he" , or "him" now , instead of having to say "or" . And we can start thinking about who he might turn out to be , and what sort of personality he might have . It'll actually be easier to think about how things are going to be now .
"Yeah , he's definitely our little boy now !" , I reply , and he kisses my forehead .
Dr . Hong wipes the schmear off of me , then prints off a picture of the ultrasound for us , and we leave the office . We get into the car and go back home , and when we get inside , I say , "Well , I guess we should call our folks and give them the news , babe ."
I'm sort of surprised when he says , "Not just yet , there's something else we should do first ."
"Which would be ?"
"We need to be able to tell them who he is . If we don't decide that before we tell anybody , my folks , yours , the guys , were going to have everybody trying to push their opinions , and I want that to be something that we decide just between us ."
I realize that he's right , and that even though they all mean well , we don't really need everyone promoting their agenda when it comes to naming our son .
"Well ,I guess we need to go through some of those books today , don't we ?" , I say .
"Already on it ." , he replies , already carrying the books to the coffee table . "C'mon , darlin' , let's get comfortable . This may take awhile ."
