My Perfect Weapon

Chapter 58: Don't Fear The Reaper

Jinxx set across the room from his new assignment. He watched as the man set sipping his coffee in the little café smiling at the people as they passed. Jinxx always hated these jobs. The man was a father of two and his wife had died two years ago. His children would be orphans and he felt guilt rise up in his chest. He tried to ignore it knowing there was nothing he could do. This was his job.

This was the life of a reaper. Knowing the moment someone was going to die wasn't always pleasant especially in situations like this one. It was his job to make sure his assignments passed over smoothly. He had to make sure they went where they were suppose to go. Most people would think that meant either heaven or hell but that wasn't always true. Sometimes people were sent into new bodies to live new lives.

There had been cases where a reaper had been late or unable to be there at the moment of death in which case the assignment would become a ghost. When that happened it was hard to convince them they were dead and they would to continue to roam the earth still thinking they were living their lives.

Jinxx glanced down at his watch. It was almost time. He stood from his seat and crossed the room slowly. No one noticed him as he approached the man. The man looked up at him as he came to stand in front of the table where he sat.

"It's time, Mr. Thomas." he said to the man.

The man grabbed his chest a look of pain on his face. His body fell off the chair and onto the floor leaving his spirit body on the chair he had been sitting in. A look of shock came over his face as he looked down at his body on the floor. He looked up at Jinxx.

"Are you death?" he asked.
"No, Mr. Thomas. I'm just a reaper." he answered.
"What about my children?" the man asked with a look of grief.
"They will be fine, Mr. Thomas. I promise. But right now you need to come with me. Someone has been waiting for you."

He turned as the door between the worlds opened revealing the small dark haired woman standing there. She smiled as she held out a hand to her husband.
"Jessica?"
"Yes, Adam, it's me. It's time to come home." She said.

He took her hand and Jinxx followed him through the door. Another assignment safely led to where he was meant to go. Just one more job and he would be able to retire and live a normal life. Well, a normal life as far as being a reaper goes.

He walked into the office of the head reaper. Death himself set at the desk smiling kindly at him. Death was not the skeletal figure most people imagined. He looked like a normal person except his eyes. They were a vivid silver. He wasn't scary or evil on the contrary he was very friendly and loved people. Sometimes he would even go into the human world and interact with them. Though he had to where sunglasses when he did so to hide his unusual eyes.

"Jinxx, another successful crossover I see. You're record is spotless. You've never failed to bring them over."
"Thank you, sir. I always try to be prompt."
"I will miss you after this last assignment. Any idea what you'll do once you retire?"
"I don't know yet, sir. Maybe settle down somewhere."

Death rummaged around his cluttered desk for a moment looking for something. He finally found what he was looking for and handed Jinxx the file. He looked over the information and then a look of confusion crossed his face.
"Sir, it doesn't say where I'm supposed to take him."
"This is a special case, Jinxx. I won't you to handle it. This man's name is Kevin Jenkins. He will be shot tonight at midnight in a robbery gone bad. I need you to make sure this doesn't happen. Do what ever you have to do to keep him from dying."
"I don't understand, sir."

Death smiled. He looked thoughtful for a moment.
"Sometimes, Jinxx, a man's destiny isn't to die, but to live and do great things. I know this is an unusual assignment, but it's something that has to be done."

Jinxx nodded though he still didn't fully understand. He wouldn't question it. He would do his job as instructed. He had no idea how he was supposed to keep this man from dying. The file said he would be shot in the head and that wasn't something a person could recover from easily.

"Jinxx, you should know this man keeps some unusual company. Including werewolves and vampires. Perhaps you could ask for their assistance."

This man was friends with vampires and werewolves. Well, that wasn't something you heard everyday. Humans were rarely aware of their existence and usually when they were, they always tried to kill them out of fear.

Jinxx turned and exited the room. He knew he probably wouldn't be able to do this on his own. It was time to pay a visit to some vampires. He just hoped they would listen to him since reapers and vampires weren't on the best of terms with each other.
