My Perfect Weapon

Chapter 59: How To Save A Life

Andy sat with Skylar on the couch watching a movie. Lacy was working on a dress for Skylar. Graduation was in two days and she was super excited to finally be getting out of school. He had to admit, he was proud of the fact that she wanted to finish. Most people would have dropped out long ago.

The door bell rang and he got up to answer it. As he approached the door an uneasy feeling settled over him. He hesitated to open the door, knowing that whatever was on the other side wasn't human.

He pulled the door open to see a man with black hair standing there. His eyes were blue and, although they were friendly, they made Andy uneasy. He was dressed all in black and something about him reminded him of the stories you hear about Death. Then it hit him. He knew why he felt uneasy. This man was a Reaper.

Andy instantly became defensive. The only human in this house was Skylar and there was no way this guy was going to take away his angel.
"What do you want? If you're hear for Skylar, you're wasting your time. There's no way I'm letting you take her." Andy said coldly.
"I'm not here to take anyone. Do you think if I were, I would have rang the doorbell. That's not how we work." The man replied.
"Then why are you here?"
"May I come in please? It's important that I speak with you and we don't have much time."

Andy sighed and reluctantly stepped back. The man entered and offered Andy what seemed to be a friendly smile. He still didn't completely trust this guy so he sent Lacy a mental message to take Skylar into the back of the house. He called to the others, who instantly appeared ready to defend Skylar with their lives if they had to.

When the others appeared, the man let out a sigh. Andy led him to the living room.
"Look, I know you don't trust me, but I'm really not here to take anyone. I'm actually here because my assignment is to save someone. Someone close to you." The man said.
"You expect us to believe a Reaper is here to stop someone from dying." Ash asked crossing his arms over his chest.
"I know it's unusual, but that is my assignment. It was given to me by Death himself. He said this man must be kept alive whatever way possible."
Ash studied him a moment then turned to Andy. "He's telling the truth, Andy. I see no deception in what he said."

Andy nodded. Ash had the ability to tell whenever someone lied. It came in handy. Andy turned to the man.
"What's your name, Reaper?"
"Jinxx."
"Well, Jinxx, tell us exactly what's going on."

They sat down on the couch and Jinxx pulled a file from his jacket. He handed it to Andy and he had a sudden feeling of Deja Vu remembering the night Kevin had come to him for help finding Lauren. He shook the feeling away and looked at the file. It was the death file of Kevin he was holding in his hand.

The file had a picture of Kevin in it along with the information about how and when he would die. The space for destination was left blank. Andy looked up at Jinxx.
"Kevin will die tonight?"
"If we don't stop it. Which is what I was sent to do."
"But if Death doesn't want him to die, why doesn't he just stop it from happening." Evan asked.
Jinxx shook his head. "It doesn't work that way. His death will be caused by another human. Humans were given free will at the beginning of time. By interfering himself, Death would be taking away the man's free will. Everything in a human's life is made up of choices. Each choice had a consequence. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and sometimes their choices effect other people, but it's his choice to make. Nothing can change that. However, someone else's choice can."
"What do you mean?" Andy asked
"I have had assignments that were saved because someone else made a choice to try and save them. There was one assignment I had where a three year old boy was supposed to be hit by a car and killed. An elderly man saw the boy crossing the street and then saw the car. He made a choice then to try to save the little boy. The man ran after the boy and pushed him out of the way at the moment the car was suppose to hit him. I ended up taking the elderly man instead. His choice saved the boy's life. That little boy is now a grown man. He's a doctor at a nursing home. He works hard everyday to care for his patients, because he knows it was an elderly man who saved his life that day. He believes that by making a person's last moments as easy as possible, he's paying his respects to the man who saved his life."
"So, how do we save Kevin?"
"You have a choice to make now, Andy. You have the power to save his life. You're a vampire. Just a small amount of your blood will keep him alive, but you also know the consequence of that choice. He will become a vampire himself. Are you willing to face that consequence?"

Andy thought about it for a moment. Kevin had been a good friend to both him and Skylar. He had kept their secret and even helped protect that secret at the risk of causing himself big trouble. He had bent the rules so many times to help him and not once had he ever hesitated or complained. He never asked for anything except the time he needed help finding Lauren and even then it was to help Lauren not himself. Andy knew Karen and Lauren would be lost without Kevin. He was the closest thing to a father figure that Lauren had and Karen depended on him to help raise her.

Andy looked up at Jinxx. "Alright, I'll do it, but it might be hard to convince him to cooperate. He's kind of stubborn sometimes."
"Then I suggest we go and start trying to convince him. It's ten o'clock and we only have till midnight." Jinxx said.

They both got up off the couch and headed to the door. He wasn't sure how Kevin would react to this suggestion. Andy knew that Kevin had been curious and fascinated about what he was, but it was one thing to be curious and another to experience it first hand. He might not want to be a vampire. But, then again, Kevin had always surprised him. He would just have to see how this went. There was another choice Andy had, but he would need to be there at a pivotal moment and he would also be risking more people finding out what he was. He would do it, but only if there was no other choice. He knew it was a choice that would cost him and the price he paid would be high. But, as Jinxx said, it was his choice to make. He might not be human, but he still had free will.
