My Perfect Weapon

Chapter 51: I Hear Your Cries

9 year old Emily Savage sniffle and wiped another tear from her cheek. Why did her big brother, Randy have to be so mean. She had waken up thirsty and all she had wanted was a glass of water, but Randy had been doing bad things with some girl on the couch. He had gotten angry when Emily came down stairs and interrupted them. He had yelled at her and slapped her across the face telling her he would deal with her later.

Emily knew that couldn't mean anything good. Randy was always doing something to her. Once he had thrown her in a garbage dumpster and left her there for hours. Their mom had been furious when Randy finally told her what he had done. When her mom had finally come and got her out it had been dark and Emily had been terrified. She thought she was going to be stuck there forever.

She had run up the stairs after Randy had hit her and locked her door. Now she lay clutching her teddy bear hoping he wouldn't pick the lock on her door like the time he had done when he had cut off all her hair in the middle of the night.

Their mother couldn't control Randy. The last time she had tried, he smack her backwards and she had hit her head on the coffee table. She had to go to the hospital and get stitches. Emily remembered she had cried a lot when that happened. There had been so much blood that she had been afraid their mother was going to die.

Emily sat up when she heard a noise. She thought it might be Randy picking her lock, but then she realized it wasn't coming from the door. She turned her head trying to find where the noise was coming from. Then she saw her curtains blowing in the breeze and she realized her window had been opened.

There was a whooshing sound followed by a soft thud and then a sort of rustling sound. She could see a figure was now standing just inside her window. Her heart began to pound, but she was too afraid to move.
"It's ok. I won't hurt you, little one." A deep voice said

A man step from the shadows and Emily saw that he had two leathery wings folded over his shoulders. She wondered if he were an angel but was too afraid to ask. She clutched her teddy bear closer as he moved in front of her and kneeled down so that he was at eye level with her.
"What's your name, little one?" He asked her. His voice was gentle and she wasn't so afraid anymore.
"E-Emily." she stuttered out.
"My name's Andy, Emily. Why are crying?"
"My brother, Randy, hit me." she replied sniffling.
"I'm sorry, Emily. Does he do that often?" he said wiping away one of her tears.
She nodded. "He hits my mom too. He's really mean."

She looked up at him as he moved to sit beside her on the bed. He shifted his wings slightly as he settled there.
"Are you an angel?" she asked looking at his wings.
He chuckled. "No, little one, I'm not."
"Oh. Then what are you?" she asked hoping she wasn't being rude. He seemed nice and she didn't want to offend him.
He chuckled again. "Just think of me as Batman." he said with a wink.

She giggled. Why couldn't her brother be this nice.

"Emily, I have to go now, but if you ever need help, just call my name, ok?" he said looking down at her.
"But how will you know?" she asked

He looked up at the full length mirror that was on the back of her closet door.
"Jake." he said.

Another man stepped out of her mirror and she clutched her teddy bear again.
"Don't be afraid, Emily. I won't hurt you." he said smiling at her. "My name is Jake."
"H-hi." She said smiling shyly.
"Jake, will let me know if you need me, Emily."
"Ok, but what happens if I'm not near a mirror." she asked worriedly.
"Don't worry. Jake's not the only one watching."

She nodded and then yawned.
"Good night, Emily." He said standing up.
"Good night, Andy." she replied as she laid down

He tucked the covers around her shoulders as she watched Jake step back into the mirror. She heard him move back toward the window as she closed her eyes. As she drifted off to sleep she heard a soft whooshing sound and knew that he had left. She smiled slightly in her sleep knowing the next time Randy did something to her someone would hear her cries and save her.
