My Perfect Weapon

Chapter 29: Coming Home.

After signing her release papers, Skylar walked out of the hospital. Detective Jenkins met her at the entrance. "Detective, what are you doing here?" she asked.
"I heard you were getting out. I thought I would come by and see if you needed a ride home."

Before she could answer, Andy stepped out of the shadows. "That's generous of you, detective." He said as he walked to Skylar's side. For a moment she didn't know how to react. What was he thinking? To her suprise, though, Detective Jenkins smiled at him, before speaking. "Don't worry, Andy. I'm not here on official business. I actually wanted to give this back to you." He said holding out the journal. "It seems somehow most of the evidence disappeared from the police station. Without the evidence we don't have much of a chance of catching the guy." He winked at Andy as he said the last part.
"You would think the police would be more careful with the evidence." Andy said as he placed an arm around Skylar and pulled her to his side.
"Indeed. So, how about that ride?"

In the car both Andy and Detective Jenkins told Skylar about their late night visit together. She was surprised that he seemed to be ok with Andy. "Don't worry, Skylar. Your secret is safe with me." He said looking over at her.
"I'm glad, but, can I ask why? You could get in a lot of trouble for this."
"When I was growing up, I was often bullied. Mainly because I had a fascination with all things paranormal. People thought I was weird. I know how it feels. I guess I just wish that I had someone like Andy there for me."
"You were bullied?"
"All the time. People called me a freak. They would beat me up almost daily. Just because I was into things they considered to be strange. I'll never understand why people look down on someone for being different. The world would be boring if we were all the same."

When they got back to the apartment building, Andy opened the door for her and she stepped out of the car. The brace she had to wear was beginning to get uncomfortable and her ribs were hurting. Andy seemed to notice this right away. "Come on, my love, let's get you inside. I'll get you something for pain." he said as he picked her up bridal style.

Detective Jenkins led the way to the apartment. He took the keys from Andy and unlocked the door. When they got inside, Skylar saw Lacy an Erica standing there holding a welcome home sign. "Erica? What are you doing here?" She asked surprised to see her.
"Hi, Skylar. I know I'm probably the last person you want to see right now, but I'm really sorry for what I did. I never wanted to leave you in that ally. Megan and Alex wouldn't let me call for help. I promise I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

Skylar looked up at Andy, who was still holding her. He walked over to the couch and set her down before he spoke. "Skylar, she really does feel bad. She wouldn't be here if I thought otherwise. I turned her. She's like me and Lacy now. It's part of her punishment for what she did." He said kneeling down in front of her.

Skylar looked over at Erica. She was looking down at the floor with a look of shame on her face. Skylar made the decision to forgive her then. She had never been one to hold a grudge. "Erica, I forgive you. It's clear to me you feel bad. That tells me you're not a bad person." She said giving her a small smile.
"How can you after what I did?" She asked looking up at Skylar.
"The past is the past, Erica. We all do things we regret. As long as you learn from those mistakes, I think you shouldn't dwell on it."
"I think that's a very good philosophy to have." Detective Jenkins said speaking for the first time. "Ms. Johnson, you're looking better than the last time I saw you." He add with a nod in her direction.
"Thank you, detective. I'm glad to be here. We weren't sure if it would work or not."
"You must really love Skylar then."
"She's like my sister."
"You're lucky to have such good friends, Ms. West."
"Thank you, detective. I know and please call me Skylar."
"In that case, Skylar, please call me Kevin." He said as he turned to the door. "I'm sure you guys have some catching up to do. I'll leave you to it."
"Thanks for the ride, Kevin." Andy said as he walked him to the door. "If you ever need anything, you know where to find me."

With one last nod he walked out the door. Skylar couldn't help but smile. She was glad to be home with Andy and Lacy. And it seemed as if she would be finding a new friend in Erica. Kevin would keep her secret and everything was finally going well. Now, if it would stay that way.
