My Perfect Weapon

Chapter 28: A Late Night Visit

Detective Jenkins left Skylar's room and headed down the hall. He had spent a couple of hours questioning her, trying to get information about who could be killing all these people. Unfortunately the drugs they were giving her was making it hard to get answers.

He got into his car and headed home. He was tired. It had been a long day. He turned the radio on and hummed softly to the music. He glanced down at the clock on the dash and saw that it was already 11:00. It was a good thing he never got married. A wife would probably be worried sick by now with all the late hours he kept. Though, having no wife ment he lived alone. He couldn't lie to himself, that was why he worked so late. He didn't like going home to an empty house.

He pulled the car into the driveway of his two story house and killed the engine. As he stepped out of the car, he noticed one of the upstairs windows was opened. The curtain blowing in the slight breeze that was stirring. He frowned. He knew he hadn't left a window opened. On instinct, he pulled his gun from it's holster and made his way quietly to the front door.

He unlocked the door and pushed it open. The livingroom was dark and he fumbled for the light switch. When the light filled the room, he entered the house gun first. He went through every room but found noone. Nothing was out of place. It didn't make sense. Maybe he had left the window open and just didn't remember.

He stepped back into his bedroom and put his gun back in the lock box on the top shelf of his closet. He changed into his pj's and went down the stairs to the kitchen. As he was pulling a beer out of the fridge, he heard a noise from the livingroom. He froze. How could he have missed an intruder? He had went through the whole damned house.

He cautiously walked into the livingroom. Sitting there on his couch was the man from Skylar's journal pages. They stared at each other for a moment before Andy spoke. "Why do you keep visiting Skylar?"

This had to be one of the weirdest moments of his life. He knew this man before him was only the made up fantasy of a teenaged girls journal, and yet, here he was sitting in front of him.

"I'm trying to get answers." Detective Jenkins finally answered.
"You won't find the answers you're looking for from her. She needs her rest. She won't get it if you keep harrassing her."

Since he seemed to have stepped into The Twilight Zone, he might as well go with it. "Can I get you a beer?" he asked. Might as well be a good host. Even if it was to an imaginary person.

Andy shook his head. Detective Jenkins made his way to his favorite chair and set down without taking his eyes off of him. "You're taking this pretty well." Andy said.
"I've learned over the years that there's more to the world than most people think." he said as he took a sip of beer.

He set the bottle down on the coffee table as Andy lit a cigarette. He turned and pulled an ashtray off the table beside the chair and set it on the coffee table next to his beer, before lighting a cigarette of his own.
"Can I ask you some questions?" he asked.
"Do you really want to know the answers?" Andy replied taking drag from his cigarette.
"For my own curiousity, yes. I can't really arrest you since you don't actually exist."
Andy smirked at him. "You would have to get the cuffs on me first, and even if you did, they wouldn't hold me."
"So, I take it you really are a vampire?"

Andy didnt answer. Instead, he let two fangs slide down. "Answer your question?" Indeed it did. He should have been scared, but he wasn't. His mother had always told him he was too curious for his own good. He guessed she was right.

"Are you going to keep killing people?"
"As long as they keep hurting Skylar."
"Why?"
"Have you ever been in love?" Andy asked him as he stubbed out his cigarette.
"No, can't say that I have." he answered taking another pull off his beer.
"Skylar is my world. I would do anything to protect her."
"Where is Lacy Johnson's body and Erica Richards?"
"Lacy is more alive than you think. And Erica is fine. She just needs time to adjust, but that's to be expected."
"So, you turned them? Why didn't you kill Erica like you did the others."
"Yes, I turned them. Erica was an exception. She wanted to get help for Skylar. The others wouldn't let her. She actually felt bad for what she did. I figured it would be worse to let her live with it."

This was definitely the strangest night of his life. He was sure noone else could say they'd had a conversation with a vampire before. He had so many questions, but felt it best not to push his luck.
"How can we work this out. I can't let you keep killing people right under my nose, but I can't exactly, as you said, put you in handcuffs either."

Andy looked thoughtful for a moment. "You seem like a reasonable guy. I like you. I'll tell you what. How about I promise that you won't find anymore bodies." Detective Jenkins wasn't stupid. He knew he wasn't promising not kill anyone else, only that the bodies wouldn't be found.
"I have to be honest with you. I like you as well. Technically, by law, if there's no body, there's no crime. Unless the evidence points toward foul play."

Andy stood and headed toward the door. "Will you leave Skylar alone now?" he asked as he opened the door.
"I think I have all I need from her." He replied as he stood up.
"I know you have a lot of questions, detective. About what I am. Maybe, someday, I'll answer them for you. Until next time."

And with that he disappeared into the night. Detective Jenkins sighed and went to close the door. He couldn't help but let out a small chuckle. You couldn't help but like the guy. He shook his head as he headed up the stairs to bed. This had definitely been an interesting night.
