Children of Dawn

Chapter 5

Jake’s POV
September 17th, 2003, Idaho
“Jake, you know which rest stop we left the trailer at right?” My grandmother shouted from the other end of the phone.
“Yes, yes. We’ve been over this a dozen times,” I groaned. Grandparents could be really annoying. Especially when you were helping them move.
“We’re sorry we aren’t going to get to see you before you take the trailer. We’ve already left with our friends to go to dinner one last time before we go get our last boxes from the house,” she said. I winced and pulled my ear away from the phone. She seemed to think that you had to scream at people for them to be able to hear you through the phone.
“It’s alright. I’ll see you when you move into your new house,” I said with forced politeness.
“Oh, I’m sure you’ll miss us! I’m so--”
“Hey, grandma the roads are getting kinda busy, I gotta go, love you!” I interrupted, knowing that she’d hang up if she thought my safety was being threatened.
“Goodbye, dear! We’ll see you soon!” She shouted.
“Bye!” I yelled back snapping the phone closed. I sighed and looked at the empty road in front of me. Sometimes lying didn’t feel bad. I was almost to the rest stop. I saw the sign, it was in just ten miles farther up the road. My old truck shuddered as I forced in faster up the hill. It wasn’t long before the turn into the rest stop appeared. I rolled into the parking lot, the moving trailer was sitting on the edge of the lot. I thought that it had a dog on the side of it, not a parrot but I shrugged it off. I was not calling back my grandparents, I’d get sucked into another forty minute conversation about the weather. The parking lot was nearly empty except one car sitting about halfway across the lot from me. The trailer was padlocked shut, and I didn’t have the key, so I didn’t bother trying to get into it.
It didn’t take long to get the trailer hooked up to my truck. In ten minutes I was on my way down the road. I didn’t get far. Maybe half a mile before I saw the red and blue flashing lights behind me.
“Shit,” I whispered to myself. I tried to think of why I’d been pulled over. I hadn’t been speeding, the tags on my truck were good, none of my lights were out. I slowed the truck down and pulled off to the side of the road. I rolled my window down expecting to get a cop at my window, instead I heard a shout.
“Get out of the vehicle and put your hands on your head. Face away from me,” A voice shouted. A line of cop cars were rolling up behind me, and the cop that was yelling had his gun pointed in my direction.
“The fuck?” I said. I opened my car door and stepped out into the road. With my back to the police I put my hands on the back of my head, getting shot was not on my list of things to do.
“Now walk back towards the sound of my voice,” The cop yelled. I stepped slowly back, as the officer yelled to me. I heard dogs barking. A rough hand grabbed my wrist and pulled it down behind my back. It was cuffed and then the other hand was brought down with it.
“Okay let’s go,” The officer said. He pulled me over and forced me down onto the hood of the car.
“Dude, what is going on?” I asked.
“Our undercover saw you, so don’t play dumb,” The officer said as he started patting me down.
“Got anything that’s gonna stab me in your pockets?” He asked.
“I have a box cutter in my back pocket, it should be closed. I’m just helping my grandparents move,” I said. He pulled everything out of my pockets. The dogs barked again and I heard them scratching at the back door of the trailer.
“Where’s the key for the trailer?” The officer asked me.
“My grandparents have it, buddy it’s their trailer,” I said.
“First of all, I’m not your buddy. Second of all give up that story now, we know who you are and we know what you’re doing. Where’s the key?” He demanded.
“I don’t have it,” I said.
“Anyone got bolt cutters? He’s not talking,” The officer yelled.
“Got it, and SWAT is on their way,” Another man yelled. The waked up to the trailer and I heard a bang as they broke the lock.
“Aren’t you guys gonna feel awful when you open it up and it’s nothing but my grandparent’s antiques,” I said shaking my head. I heard the creaking of the door to the trailer.
“That doesn’t look like antiques to me,” The officer turned me around. Inside the trailer was a massive machine, it had a ton of wires coming off of it and rows of dynamite shoved into the center.
“What’s that mister, uh, Jacob Mark Pitts? Looks like we found you out. What were you guys planning on blowing up with that?” He said smiling smugly as he looked at my driver's license.
“I have no idea what that is! I was just supposed to pick up my grandparents stuff” I yelled fear settling in my gut.
“Yeah right, don’t worry we’ll crack you in interrogation,” He said patting my shoulder and turning me to put me into his cruiser. Suddenly there was a squeal of tires. A red van screeched towards me with it’s sliding door open. A masked man hung out the side with a crowbar in one hand. He sung the crowbar, I ducked just in time, and it smacked the officer I was with straight in the forehead. I had no time to react, at the same time a pair of hands grabbed me by my shirt and pulled me into the van. Guns began to fire as the van door slid closed and I sat on the floor of the van trembling. The masked man with the crowbar pulled off his mask and looked at me. He was scruffy and looked like he was in between heroine highs.
“Boss, this isn’t our guy,” he said.
“What?” A man said as he turned around from the riders side seat to look at me. We were speeding down the highway with cops hot on our tail.
“It’s just some stupid kid,” the heroine addict said.
“Well we have no use for him,” the boss said looking at me with a sneer. We flew around a tight corner and I was thrown into the wall of the van.
“Don’t worry I’m losing them,” The driver yelled. I was struggling to catch my breath, but the sound of sirens was growing more faint.
“What do you want me to so with him?” The heroine addict asked.
“Get rid of him,” The boss said. The heroine addict pulled a handgun out of the waistband of his jeans and put the barrel against my forehead.
“No, please don’t,” I begged.
“Not like that you moron, if someone finds his body they’ll know he wasn’t with us. Let him go and half the cops will be spent looking for him, that’s less after us,” The boss sneered, I sighed with relief. The heroine addict put the gun back in his waistband.
“If you don’t want me to waste him then what do you want me to do?” the heroine addict asked.
“Bust his cuffs, we’ll slow down and throw him out. He’ll run cause he’s just as wanted as we are now,” The boss said smiling, “ And he won’t go to the cops either, cause if he does we’ll kill him, right?” He asked his smile was sickeningly sweet. I nodded dutifully. The heroine addict grabbed bolt cutters and cut the cuffs off me. There was a biting pain in my shoulder as he stuck me with a needle. Panic forced its way into my mind.
“What was that?” I demanded as my vision started to blur.
“Don’t worry, just a little something to keep you out of the way for a few hours while we get away, it’ll fuck with your memory too,” The heroine addict smiled revealing rotten teeth, “You don’t really think I’d hook you up with something in my special stash did you,” I was relieved he didn’t shoot me up with heroine, but I was quickly losing consciousness. I felt my muscles start to go weak. The boss yelled something, but my hearing was fuzzy, I couldn’t make it out. Suddenly the van door slid open blinding me with light. The heroine addict grabbed me by my belt and flung me out the door. I couldn’t do anything to catch myself, but I didn’t really feel it either as I crashed into the woods around the highway. I rolled off an embankment and slid until I came to a stop with my legs in a stream. I couldn’t move and slowly the forest faded to black until I passed out.
