Children of Dawn

Chapter 6

Ashley’s POV
As I entered the bar I knew that I had come to the right place. It was definitely a bar, not a club, but not a pub either. It was moderately crowded, there were people scattered around at tables and the bar had groups of friends socializing at them. There was still enough space that i knew I’d be able to find a place at the bar without being awkwardly close to anyone. The best part was the girls. There were a lot of them. Some of them showed skin, some of them did not, but all of them were beautiful. I took a deep breath to steady myself, it was still entirely possible that I could get caught with the fake ID. I decided to just try to look as confident as possible, like I was supposed to be there. I held my chin high, but not too high, and I walked like I’d been there before. I strode up to the bar and slid onto a barstool that was a few seats away from any other group. An invitation.
“What can I get for you?” A bearded bartender said, approaching me as he dried off a glass.
“Glass of Bud,” I said. Suddenly remembering just how much my face looked like a child’s. I was praying that my sudden lack in confidence didn’t show on my face. The bartender looked at me for a moment.
“As much as I want to trust you, you look a little bit young to be in here,” The bartender said raising an eyebrow. I nodded and reached into my back pocket. From my wallet I pulled the fake ID. I handed it over to the bar tender and prayed a silent prayer that I didn’t get caught. The bartender looked at it for a moment and then handed it back to me.
“Alright, I’ll get your drink right out to you,” he said with a smile.
“Thanks,” I said, holding back a sigh of relief. A second later a glass of beer clunked onto the bar in front of me. I had drank only a little bit before, a bit at parties, and a bit when my parents allowed. I made a mental note that I wasn’t going to get so drunk that I couldn’t think. I wanted to keep my head about myself. As I sipped the beer I turned around in my stool to look around. There were a lot of people milling around the dimly lit room. I had approximately zero experience picking up girls. I looked for anyone that looked like they might be alone, no one caught my eye. My eyes scanned across the room a few times, I was hoping to maybe, make eye contact with someone and then it would go from there. After a few minutes I turned back around to face the bar, I’d try again later.
Suddenly just as I was starting to stare into my half empty beer glass a girl plopped down next to me. She sighed hard and ran her hand through her blond and brown, curly hair. She was wearing a blue plaid shirt, with a white top underneath. Her blue jeans and boots told me that she was my kind of girl. She didn’t even seem to notice me as she sighed and ordered a beer. She rested her forehead on the heels of her hands.
“Rough day?” I asked smiling. She jumped and turned to look at me.
“Yeah, you could say that,” She said with a little half smile.
“Wanna talk about it?” I asked, taking a sip of my beer.
“You really want to listen?”
“Well I might be able to take your mind off whatever it is that’s bugging you,” I said with a comical shrug. She smiled and bit her lip a little. She was very pretty.
“What’s your name?” She asked.
“Ash,”
“Nice to meet you, Ash. I’m Brady,” She introduced sticking out her hand. I shook her hand and I couldn’t help but notice how soft her hand was.
“So Brady, what’s on your mind?” I asked, turning a bit in my stool to face her. She gave me a long look and then sighed. It looked like she was getting ready to start talking to me when suddenly she looked over my shoulder, and any interest faded from her face.
“Look, Ash. You really seem like a nice guy, but I know guys like you. Just talking to me isn’t your end game. You’re very sweet, but I’m really not interested in anything like that,” She said, and she actually looked kind of sad. She patted the back of my hand and then slid off the bar stool, taking her beer with her. I barely had time to be bummed before she was gone in the crowd. I sighed and rested my chin in my hand on the bar.
“That sucks buddy,” The bartender said.
“Did I say something wrong?” I asked.
“Nah, man. She’s just not into it,” he said and I sighed. It would have been going so much better for me if Damien were there to be my wingman. After a while of skulking at the bar no one else approached me to talk and I had to go to the bathroom. At that point I was about two and a half beers deep. I could feel the buzz a little bit, but it wasn’t too bad. I didn’t want to drink that much more. I slid off the bar stool and started pushing my way through the crowd to the neon bathroom sign. It was near the back of the back of the bar. The woman’s restroom door was next to hallway. The men’s was down a small dark hallway and past a door that led outside. It was considerate of the bar owners, no girls would get snatched by some creep out in the alley on their way to the bathroom. I made my way past the door with no problem. I went into the bathroom and did my thing. Aside from the bathroom being slightly more gross than I expected it was normal.
As I was leaving the restroom the door that lead out into the alleyway was open. Through the cracked door I saw a girl who appeared to be fighting with some guy. Her back was to me but suddenly the guys hand flew and he slapped her across the face with so much force that it knocked her back onto the ground. My stomach sank as I realized that the girl on the ground was Brady. The guy was walking towards her and quickly unbuckling his belt. Brady screamed and tried to crawl backwards away from him. I wasn’t going to just stand there and let him do something awful to her just because she rejected me. I sprung at the door and flung it open as fast as I could. I stepped between the guy and Brady. She stopped screaming and the guy looked confused.
“You can’t touch her if she doesn’t want you to,” I said.
“Move out of the way little boy, she’s mine. I take what I want,” The guy growled.
“Ash, leave. He’ll hurt you,” Brady begged behind me through gasps and tears.
“You know this little punk?” The guy yelled. His face twisted and turned bright red in rage. His meaty fists balled up at his sides. I pulled my fists up, ready to fight. Maybe it was the alcohol, but I was ready to kick his ass, even though he probably weighed two and a half time what I did.
“I’m going to gut you and fuck her on your dead body,” The guy yelled. Suddenly my confidence waivered just a bit as a switch blade appeared in his hand. I saw the glint of the metal in his hand and he lunged at me. I ducked and rolled off to the side as he charged past me like a big stupid bull. He wheeled around huffing and ran at me again. I wasn’t going to be able to get up in time to get out of his way.
“I’m going to kill you!” He bellowed. I stumbled back and my hand landed on a metal trashcan lid. I stood up fast and swung the lid as hard as I could at him. It smashed his face with a metallic clang and he stumbled back, the blade flying out of his hand. He was struggling to get up, blood pouring from his nose. I scrambled along the ground and managed to pick the blade up in my trembling hands. I stood ready for the bull of a man to come at me again. He did, running in a blind fury, swinging his fists like a madman. I ducked under one of his swinging arms and the blade in my hand sunk into the flesh under his ribs. His eye rolled in pain but he was still fighting. Still trying to grab me. Suddenly a rage like nothing I’d ever felt before ravaged my body. I pulled the blade out of his stomach and shoved it back in at a different point. Blood poured onto my hands. He stumbled back and fell onto the ground and the blade was free in my hands again.
“I’m going to kill you,” He groaned as he tried to get back up. I straddled his middle the rage boiling through my veins, I could hardly see I was so angry.
“You think you can treat women like that you vile piece of shit!” I screamed. I stabbed him in the stomach twice.
“They. Are. People. Too!” I yelled. WIth every word I drove the knife into his chest, neck and stomach over and over. Suddenly I stopped. I was covered in blood, I stood up and dropped the knife as I turned around to Brady. She stared at me in horror, still sitting stunned on the ground.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“You killed him,” She gasped. I took a step towards her.
“He can’t hurt you now. You’re safe,” I said as I took another step in her direction. She stood up quickly.
“Stay away from me!” She screamed, backing towards the door. “That was my fiancé!” She turned and ran into the bar screaming.
“There was a murder! A boy named Ash just killed my fiancé!”
