Children of Dawn

Chapter 4

Jinxx’s POV
Despite my hopes Sammi was not getting better, in fact she was getting much worse. A day in the cold with no food hadn’t done her any good. When I arrived back in our allyway she was in a feverish sleep and wouldn’t wake up even for food. So I ate by myself and pondered my choices. Sammi was dying, that was clear. If she died I would also lose our baby. The folded up paper in my pocket seemed bigger, more prominent. I couldn’t see any other choice, but I knew that there would be some consequence to me going to that address for help. I looked at Sammi sweat coated her brow, one hand was wrapped around her shoulders and the other was on her stomach. I shivered in the cold and huddled closer to the fire. I knew that I couldn’t keep procrastinating. She was going to die if I didn’t do anything.
I pulled the address out of my pocket and looked at it again it was about a twenty minute walk, with Sammi in my arms it would probably take a bit longer. I sighed and looked at her one more time. It was my only choice, and I had to do it for her. I leaned over to her and gathered her up into my arms. She weighed less than a feather. I considered it for just another moment before I took a deep breath and walked off in the direction of the address. The streets were nearly empty as I walked down them. Only a few cars drove swiftly by buffeting me with a cold breeze. Other than that it was a still night. The stars shone crystal clear in the sky and the moon looked down on me like the squinted eye of a god. I marched on. It was a disturbingly long time before my arms started to ache from carrying her. I knew I wasn’t that much stronger than I was in the past, she was just so much lighter.
Eventually I began to get into the more industrial side of town. The stars didn’t seem as bright there. The smog from the various factories didn’t let them shine so brightly. It was darker, not as many street lights cascaded their light onto the roads. I swallowed hard and considered turning back. Someone could jump me, I didn’t have anything to defend myself with. I was walking slowly by some storage containers, trying to find the warehouse when I suddenly heard a crunch of gravel. Like someone who had been standing still took a step. I froze and gripped Sammi tighter. My heart seemed to still as I waited, listening for another sign of movement. My eyes strained in the dark for something, anything. A few yards down from me there was a bright street light, all around it there seemed to be nothing but darkness around it. Like the streetlight absorbed all the other light around it.
I was about to just convince myself that I had been hearing things and keep walking when I heard footsteps. My body went rigid as a massive man stepped into the the light. His massive shoulders cast a sloping shadow onto the ground. He was well over six feet tall and his arms bulged with muscle. I hardly dared to breathe.
“I wondered if you’d come,” He said his voice was so deep that it gurgled. “Come this way we won’t hurt you,” I whirled quickly to face the other way as another large man stepped out from behind a blind corner. I must have walked right past him without seeing him. I hiked Sammi up higher into my arms, they were beginning to burn, I wasn’t going to be able to hold onto her for much longer. I swallowed harder and turned back to the man under the light. I heard the footsteps behind me get closer. I thick, meaty hand thudded onto my shoulder and started slowly pushing me forward. I had no choice but to walk. As I got closer to the man under the light I saw that he had pierced ears, a shaved head, a tattoo running up his neck and a scar dragging down his cheek.
“We had a bet going whether or not you’d show up,” The man said as I was pushed up next to him.
“Oh really? Did you win?” I asked, my voice came out thin and wavering. The man smiled a bit.
“I did win, Thatch there owes me some money,” He said, the man behind me growled.
“You’ll get all the money I owe you when I’m damn ready, Butch,” Thatch grumbled.
“We’ll settle our dues later, but right now this is about, Mr. Jeremy and his lovely lady here,” Butch said.
“Call me Jinxx, and what do you want from me?” I asked.
“Well Jinxx,” Butch said smearing my name teasingly “That is for our boss to tell you. It’s a bit of a walk, why don’t I relieve you of that burden,” He gestured to Sammi in my arms. I took a step back.
“Don’t worry your skinny little ass, I’ve been given direct orders to be courteous, I won’t hurt her,” Butch said, his polite grin featured a few gold teeth. He held out his meaty arms, despite not wanting to I let him take Sammi from me. It didn’t seem like I had much of a choice. I was slightly comforted by the fact that he took her from me very gently. She didn’t even stir as she was taken from my arms.
“Alright, let’s go,” Butch said. He turned and started walking off with Sammi. Tatch put his hand on my shoulder to move me along, but he didn’t need to. I wasn’t going to let Sammi out of my sight.
We walked silently down the rows of storage containers. Suddenly we came to the end of them, off to my right was a massive abandoned warehouse. It’s red paint was faded and peeling, revealing rusted patches underneath. A flickering white light bleached a bay door white. Thatch left my side, finally. He walked ahead of Butch and I to open the big door. He grabbed the edge of the door and hauled it open. It scraped along the ground and the shrieking sound it made echoed through the streets. Sammi jerked awake in Butch’s arms. She saw him and screamed, fighting with all her might to get out of his arms. She was no match for Butch, he simply held onto her more tightly.
“Who the fuck are you? Jinxx!” She screamed. I ran up next to her and grabbed her hand.
“I’m right here babe, I found you someone who can take good care of you,” I said. She looked at me like I was crazy.
“Who the fuck is this guy?” She shouted.
“This is Butch,” I said kindly. At that point Butch just kept on walking. I walked next to him still holding Sammi’s hand.
“Wh- Where are we?” Sammi asked turning to me the fear was becoming clear on her face.
“A warehouse outside town, there’s a doctor here who is going to ask me to do a job for him, and he knows how to help you,” I explained. As we entered the warehouse I noticed that there was a hospital bed on the center of the room. There was an IV next to it and some curtains.
“Jinxx, that’s insane. What job is he going to have you do?” She said, I shrugged. The weight of my bad idea was settling in my stomach.
“Oh my! I was worried that you wouldn’t find it in yourself to take me up on my offer,” A new voice called. I turned to the source of the sound. A pale and skinny man in a doctor’s coat emerged from behind a the curtains. He smiled broadly at me and made his way quickly across the floor. He took my hand in his trembling cold one and shook it quickly.
“Oh I am so happy to see the both of you, still alive and well! I am Doctor Brazold” He shuffled away from me and shook Sammi’s hand as well. She looked at me for answers and all I could do was shrug.
“You can really help Sammi?” I asked.
“Of course, and as an added bonus, for helping me I will give you two a total of two hundred thousand dollars to help you get back on your feet,” He smiled, “but first let’s get the young lady on the bed, shall we?” My jaw hit the floor, that was a lot of money. Butch walked swiftly with Sammi and laid her down on the bed. I walked up next to her and took her hand.
“So what is it that you need me to do?” I asked. Dr. Brazold pulled up a stool on the other side of the bed and immediately began checking Sammi’s pulse and doing other physical checks.
“Mr. Jinxx you may realize that I am sick myself, not to worry nothing contagious, and I need help acquiring something that will help me. You have an uncle that taught you a bit about surgery correct?” Dr. Brazold said looking up at me. There was a thud behind me and I noticed that Thatch had put a chair down behind me, I sat in it.
“Y-yes. I do know the basic terms of the body and surgical tools. I’ve never done surgery on someone before though,” I explained quickly.
“Well you see, I am in need of a kidney. I have a packet of instructions for you and a box of tools. If you want me to save Ms. Sammi here, and your child, I will need you to go get that kidney for me, and when you get back she will be on the mend,”
