Love Isn't Always Fair

Chapter 5

The next day, I didn’t want to get out of bed. Jinxx was already out of the bed when I woke up. I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. I could hear the kids running around outside the bedroom door, meaning it had to be after ten. The kids never got up on the weekend until after ten. I needed to get up. I couldn’t let Andy control me like this anymore. I’d spent enough time doing that in the first two years of our divorce.
I slid out of bed and stood up. I quickly put on a pair of my old faded blue jeans and a random black t-shirt. I strolled out the door and Drake ran right into me.
“Wow!” I chuckled, wrapping my arms around him. Drake looked up at me and smiled sheepishly.
“Watch where you’re going hot rod.” I teased as I ruffled his hair.
“Sorry mom.” He said with a laugh. I kissed his forehead then released him so he could continue doing whatever it was he was doing. I made my way into the kitchen where Kat sat texting one of her friends. I rolled my eyes. I really didn’t want her to have a phone but Jinxx insisted that it was important that she had one.
“Morning Brat.” I teased. Kat put her phone down and looked at me.
“About time you got up, lazy bum.” She joked right back. I smiled softly a her
“Did you guys eat already?” I asked as I opened the fridge.
“Actually no, Jinxx took off to the recording studio pretty early this morning.” She said, picking her phone back up.
“Pancakes?” I asked her. She gave me a nodd as I pulled out the eggs and milk.
“Drake” I yelled down the hall. I waited till saw his head pop out from his bedroom door before I continued, “Homemade pancakes sound good?”
‘“YEA!” Drake yelled running down the hallway. I chuckled as he skidded to a stop by the counter. He bounced excitedly on his heels as he waited for me to get over there.
“Now Drake, what’s the first step we take before we cook anything?” I asked as I ruffled his hair. Drake smiled and walked over to the kitchen sink.
“Sorry mom.” He said. After both our hands were washed we started on making the breakfast. Kat sat in her seat, talking about school while we cooked. Apparently her and her friend Sarah were fighting. I personally didn’t like Sarah because she liked to be mean to Kat and was only wanted to be friends when it benefited her. But I didn’t want to upset Kat, so I didn’t say anything.
“What about your grades?” I asked as I watched Drake pour some batter into a pan. Silence fell over Kat. I looked up at her to see her looking at the table. Tears were brimming in her eyes. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her.
“We’ll get those grades up, promise.” I said. “Even if I have to devote every minute I have off to helping with homework. We’ll do it.” Kat smiled at me.
“Thanks mom.”
“No problem kiddo.” I stated and went back to cooking pancakes. A few minutes later, Kat sat the table and Drake got out the orange juice. We all sat down and started to eat.
“Hey mom...do I look more like you or like dad?” Drake asked, causing me to joke on my orange juice. I coughed forced myself to swallow as I looked at him.
“What brings that on?” I asked him. Drake shrugged and pushed one of his pancakes around.
“You never talk about Dad. We don’t have any pictures of him. I don’t even know his name.” Drake said finally looking up at me. “And I just want to know something about him.” We sat in silence for a moment then I sighed.
“Honestly, I see your father in you. You look just like he did at your age, except you have my natural black hair. Cat’s hair is the same shade as Andy’s. You’re eyes are the same color as his.” I smiled, pausing to take a sip of orange juice.
“You’re father has the most beautiful eyes. They’re what drew me in.” I teased. Drake smiled content with the answer and started eating. I swallowed hard and looked at Kat. Hat was staring at her hair with love and distaste. I placed my hand over her free one and smiled at her. She looked at me for a moment then smiled back.
After breakfast we cleaned up and then went into the livingroom to watch a movie. The kids chose Batman. I chuckled. God they were Andy’s kids alright. I frowned as I settled into the couch, hitting play. A part of me wishes he could see the kids now. He would be so proud of them.
Kat was getting a solo on this years Christmas program. And she’s been accepted into honor choir. She had such a beautiful voice. Kat’s strong suite wasnt school, she got that from Andy. Kat would rather spend all day singing in her mirror then taking notes in class.
Drake was an amazing artist and he could play guitar. Drake had got the artistic streak from me and the music from Andy. He had also inherited Andy’s ADD.
They were great kids. Sure Kat had an attitude problem, but she was just lashing out. An who could blame her? From the bullies at school to having to deal with the memories of her father, Kat was overwhelmed. It didn’t excuse her behavior but I understood where she was coming from. I had acted out too when I had lost my parents as a child.
Of course, out of my loss I gained Andy and his family. Though Andy and I were divorced, I didn’t keep the kids away from their grandparents. Kat actually texted Andy’s parents religiously. Drake called them every now and then when I was home long enough or Kat would give up her phone. Luckily for me, Andy’s parents respected my decision to wait to tell Drake about his father and hadn’t brought him up. Drake simply thought that they were my parents since they did raise me.
I hadn’t realized how lost in thought I’d been until I felt Kat shaking my leg.
“Movies over, can I go to my room?” Kat asked. I thought for a moment then agreed. She took off to her room and shut the door. Drake stood in front of me smiling.
“Yes baby?” I asked.
“Can I show you Black Veil Brides new song? They just came out with it yesterday!” Drake looked so hopeful.
“Sure thing baby.” Drake drug me into his room and pulled up the song on his lap top. It wasn't a bad song. I was actually getting into the opening, even head banging along with Drake..until Andy started singing. My heart stopped and I let my eyes close. God I missed when he use to sing to me. I felt the corner of my mouth tug up as I remembered when he would sing to Drake while I was still pregnant. His head resting against my belly, singing until Drake stopped kicking, then he’d kiss my belly and go sing Kat to sleep. He was such a good father.
I sighed. Here i was years later, and still in love with the prick.
“Well mom, what did you think?” Drake asked. I offered him a smile.
“I love it! It’s such a good song.”

Notes

I'm so sorry I took so long with the update. I'm working on five fan fictions at the same time, so its a balancing act. But I graduated from high school a few days ago so I should be able to update more often.
