If Hell were any Closer

Chapter 26

Nikki’s POV:

Sitting here, alone on Christmas Eve, really gets a girl thinking.

As I sipped from my hot chocolate, sitting by the warm fireplace, gazing blankly up at the sparkling tree made my heart visibly ache.

I was all alone: my parents having already abandoned me years in advance, my boyfriend, a superficial asshole who I both wanted and was pissed off at. And my friends, who were all currently enjoying their holidays with their loved ones.

I lazily turned my head to catch a glance at the clock, and internally sighed at the time. Only an hour and a half until this horrid holiday officially begins.
Right now, children everywhere are probably eagerly awaiting for Saint Nick to arrive at their doorsteps, dragging a hefty bag full of toys and goodies behind him. And I too, was once a child, practically carved from innocence and purity. I too strained to stay up until dawn to open my presents on Christmas day, you know, before my parents decided that they hated me.

I wonder what it’s like. To still have hopes and dreams that can be fulfilled by Santa Claus, because all of those wishes I made are long dead and gone, like the rest of me.

A knock on the door startled me out of my gaze, and I briefly thought of simply ignoring it, but of course, the rational side of my brain won out. Whoever was delivering something on Christmas Eve of all days must’ve had a good reason to do so anyways.

However, when I opened the front door, revealing the snowy landscape and dark night sky, there was not a soul in sight. There was, lying on the ‘welcome’ mat, a white envelope.

Frowning, I plucked the piece of paper off of the ground and shut the door once again, tearing open the letter. I drank in the inscribed words quickly and with haste, pausing before rereading it, more thoroughly this time.

Notes

Alright guys, I'd say that this story is almost over actually, because after this, someone else shall make an appearance... next chapter. And then something else will happen, someone will ask someone else to go somewhere and then that will be a wrap!

Also, Central Intelligent Agency is more commonly known as C.I.A
