Our Family

I wake up to my mom's singing in the shower. God I love her voice, especially the griddiness of it, if that's even a word. I want to get out of bed, but I know my dad's up and when he hears me, I'll be in shit for yesterday. Do I regret the things I did yesterday? No, I have a boyfriend because of it and I'm glad. But I'm gonna get in shit for that because dad says I'm too young to have a boyfriend. And that's where mom swoops in, she defends my rights to boyfriends but still punishes me because I was grounded. Makes sense, but looking back at my dad's face last night, he was so angry. My dad gets mad sometimes, but I've never seen that side of him.

I regretfully get out of bed and crawl downstairs. My dad's watching old cartoons with Crow in his lap and my mom just gets out of the shower. Maybe if I wait long enough for her to get downstairs, I won't have to fight the boyfriend thing alone. But Karma's a bitch that deserves an award.

"Lily you don't have to hide." My dad says. I creep up from my spot under the dining room table. "I'm not gonna bite your head off babygirl. Come sit with me and Crow." I get up and slowly, yet hesitantly, walk into the living room and sit next to them on the couch. I look down to the ground not wanting to see the disappointment in his eyes.

"Dad I'm sorry I went out yesterday." I say but I'm really not.

"You're not sorry, you feel like you have nothing to be sorry about." He says, it's like he can read my mind.

"Well it's true, I'm not sorry about it."

"There's only one thing you should be sorry about, and that's the fact that you turned your phone off so no one could reach you. I called all your uncles, if you didn't call me back they would have sent the whole BVB army looking for you."

"You guys really feel like you could get the army to do anything for you."

"Well not anything, but a lot of things in exchange for front row tickets, backstage passes, or a day to hang with the band. Okay we're getting off track, the point is that you scared the living shit out of me with your disappearing act last night. If anything were to happen to you, I'd just about die."

"I'm sorry I scared you, I just didn't feel that I deserved to be punished so I needed to stick it to the man. I'm sorry but you had to be the man."

"I hate being the man, let your mom be the man."

"Let me be what?" My mom asks walking into the living room.

"Be the best mom ever and not ground me for a month." I say and she laughs.

"No, you're grounded until I decide you're free." She says and I sigh.

"Do I at least get to keep my phone?" I ask.

"Sorry kiddo, you won't be able to call your boyfriend as long as your grounded." My dad says with a big smile. He really doesn't like the idea of me having a boyfriend. I hand him over my phone and my mom sits down next to me.

"I'm sorry did you say our little girl has a boyfriend?" Mom asks over excitedly. Oh no, she's gonna want me to have a girl talk with her.

"Yeah, Jack took me out to dinner and a movie. He carried me to the park and we slow danced. He said he wanted to be my boyfriend and I said yes, end of story." I say getting up and walking into the kitchen.

"Awwh my little girl's growing up." She says. I grab a pop tart and walk back into the living room and begin to eat.

"Mom it's not a big deal." I say.

"But it is, what else happened?" She asks.

"I'm going back to my room." I say getting up.

"Oh Lily," I turn around to my father's voice. "Seeing as you're grounded and we can't leave you alone at home tonight, pick out a nice dress because we're going out to dinner tonight with your uncle Jake and aunt Ella."

"I hate you!" I yell walking up the stairs.

"No you don't!" He yells back.

I walk into my room and notice I can't shut the door because it's gone. Fuck it, I'm not gonna make a scene, I'll just act good for the time being. I pick out my nice short black dress and place it down on my bed. I move into the bathroom and take a nice relaxing bath. I play with the bubbles for awhile but then decide to get up. Just as I begin to get out of the tub, my dad walks in.

"Sorry!" He says before rushing out of my bathroom. I wrap a towel around myself and walk out into my bedroom where my dad sits on the bed.

"Dad you've seen me naked, you've changed my goddamn diapers. It doesn't matter." I say picking up the dress.

"I know but now you have a woman's body." I let out a little laugh.

"I have a woman's body, I'm allowed to drink, but I'm not approved on the boyfriend thing."

"Maybe because I don't won't your heart to be broken from some douchey motherfucker."

"I'm gonna get my heart broken dad, that's all apart of growing up."

"I know I just don't want to see you get hurt."

"I'll be fine." I say and take the dress into the bathroom to get changed. "Did you really have to take off the bathroom door too?"

"Yeah I'm sorry, but you scared me." He says.

"Understandable." I walk out in the dress and look through my closet for shoes. "Is anyone else coming to dinner tonight?"

"Your uncle Ashley said he was bringing a 'date'."

"Do you always have to put quotation marks when you're talking about uncle Ash's dates?" I put on my favourite black ankle boots.

"Yeah, you've met your uncle."

"I know." I braid my hair to the side.

"Hey if I grow out my hair again, would you braid it?" He asks making me laugh.

"No, you're not growing out your hair again. The last time you did it was all matted and smelly like uncle Danny's beard." I say making him laugh. I go into the bathroom to put on makeup and my dad follows.

"You know you don't have to wear makeup."

"Neither do you, but you do."

"I used to. You look beautiful without the stuff."

"But I have a black eye."

"Wear it proud, that's your battle wound." I sigh and nod. I put in my silver stud earrings.

"Aren't you gonna get ready? It is five." I ask.

"It's not gonna take me that long to get ready. I just have to put on a dress shirt and a vest." He says.

"Mom's gonna make you change." I note.

"You're right, I'm gonna go get ready." He kisses my forehead and walks out of my room.

Party of seven, this should be interesting.
