Almost Easy (Janxx)

Mind the Gap

*Jake's POV*
There was a gap between the road and the rural part of Portland. It was about a mile or so deep, one-fourth of a mile wide. So we had to continue on foot.
Andy carried Juliet because she was beginning to become more and more sick. She was sweaty and sickly pale and couldn't even walk a straight line. She was physically the weakest at this moment and we couldn't risk her attracting any danger. She'd be attacked first because the zombies and Raiders always took who they persumed as weak.
We walked around the missing link in the chain, several yards away from the mouth of it. I looked down the hole, straining my eyes to see through the darkness. I could barely see a few miscellanious limbs at the mouth of the gap, hanging from when escape was attempted. I went out on a limb and decided that the living dead was at the bottom. It sounded about right. They didn't have the same thinking skills to know to move around a deep dark crevice. Good for us, not so much them.
After a few minutes, we heard a loud screech. It broke through the silence like a weak barrier and we all turned to see the cause of it. It was a zombie, crawling on all fours. Blood dripped from its stained, rotting teeth and its eyes were missing. It began scampering towards us, still screeching.
CC quickly gunned it down, the bullets tearing through it like a knife through warm butter. "Nice aim," Ashley noted. CC just nodded at him and grasped his hand lightly. I felt a bit envious of their relationship. How it was stable while the world was not amazed me in many ways. I wondered if I could be that way with Jinxx.
It was obvious that he liked me. Jinxx was usually regal, collected and quiet but around me, he would blush and act nervous, kind of like a dork. I found it absolutely adorable. I made my appeal to him apparent as well. Why not? After all, it was just the end of the world as we knew it.
"Isn't that the farm Jinxx and that kid are at?" CC asked. He squinted and lowered his gun.
"Yeah, I think so," Juliet replied quietly. She had a scowl on her usually beautiful face. She hated being protected but we had to or she'd be killed.
The farm had a nice-sized ranchhouse and a large unpainted barn behind it. There was a path leading to what looked like an orchar, where different fruits like strawberries and blueberries grew.
"Dude," Ashley said. "Why didn't we arrive here much earlier? That is so...awesome."
"Well, besides the fact that we were trying to avoid being eaten alive..." Andy began sarcastically, his voice trailing off.
Ashley waved his hand in dismissal. "Yeah, I know, I know. You just gotta enjoy the small things."
Andy nodded and continued walking. We followed, flanking him and Juliet from different angles, weapons at the ready. We walked through the tall grasses that surrounded the front door and Andy pressed the doorbell with his thumb.
I heard a voice from indoors say,"Behind the door. I'm not sure if it's a threat or not." Then the door opened.
*Jinxx's POV*
I shooed Scythia behind the door as I heard the doorbell ring. I wasn't sure if it was a Raider or not, but I wasn't taking any chances of losing the little girl. This is pathetic to say, but I thought of her as my only friend while I was out here, besides a little black and white kitten I found named Blaze.
I attempted to smudge the bright red lipstick off my lips and remove the eyeliner with my tattooed arm. Since her parents were dead, I was trying my best to substitute for them. She liked to play in the makeup that was around the house so I let her use me as her experiment.
I opened the door, hoping I looked presentable. "Yes?"
Best thing ever: it was Andy and everyone else. He gave me a strange look and began laughing. "Your makeup," he said.
"Shut up, Andrew," I hissed. "Scythia? You can come out now."
She peeked from around the door, knife in hand and glared. Her glare became a shy smirk. "Oh. Hi." She looked at Juliet in awe.
"Well?" I said. "Are you going to come in or just stand there ad judge a seven year old's makeup abilities?"
"Why not both?" CC chimed in. He smiled, the slight, barely visible gap between his teeth showing. Scythia blushed and ran back inside, down one of the hallways.
"Scythia," I called. I turned back to them and said, "Make yourselves at home. I'll be back."
I chased after Scythia and checked one of the three unused spare rooms. They were empty. I found her in the pantry, sitting on the floor, eating crackers with a terrified look on her face. I sighed and sat with her. "Scyth," I said. "What's wrong?"
"That girl was pretty," she said, her blue-grey eyes on the ground. "So was that guy with the smile. Is it bad that pretty people scare me?"
I felt bad. I got scared by good-looking people as well...like Jake. I shivered at the thought of him. " No, it's not. But you can't run from these issues. C'mon, they'll love you, promise."
She dropped the box of Keebler crackers and stared at me in awe, her mouth stuffed with crackers. "Promise?" she asked, swallowing the food.
I hooked my pinkie in hers. "Promise," I replied. I picked her up and carried her to the living room where everyone was waiting. Ashley was fiddling with one of the flowercrowns Scythia had made and CC was having a self-debate between which Blow Pop to eat. Typical idiots, but they were my best friends.
"This lovely girl is Scythia," I announced. Scythia buried her face in my hair, shaking slightly.
"Wassup, Scyth," CC said. Ashley laughed and nudged him in the side with his pointy elbow.
Everyone else just said simple hellos, which caused her to relax. I set her down and fixed my eyes on Jake's hazel ones. "I gotta go talk to someone," I told her. "Make nice with my friends, okay?"
She nodded, her face still slightly flushed pink. "Great. Jake?"
He nodded and stood, following me to one of the spare rooms.
