An Angels Last Fall

Third Wheels can be Fun

Juliet had been on the phone all morning. Flirting, she called it when she took a pause to eat a bowl of fruit. She would walk around the living room and kitchen. Messing with this and that. Twirling her hair around her index finger. She would pop out her hips and laugh as if she were a child on the school ground. I had tried not to listen in, and succeeded most times, but when I did break, all I heard was her laughs.

“Today?” She said loudly sitting next to me on the couch. “I could be there in 30 minutes if you can?” She smiled big, and sat up straight. “I’ll go get my coat!” Why would she need a coat? It was the middle of summer.

I stared at her as she ran past me and into the hallway. I shook my head and narrowed my eye brows. I shrugged my shoulders and was startled as my pair of shoes were thrown over my head and landed on the ground.

“Come on, let’s go get some coffee.” I heard her voice echo from behind me. I reached for my shoes and slipped them on.

She let me pick the radio station after she had finished curling her hair and we had gotten in the car. I asked for silence instead. Living with one person would not be so bad I think if that one person was not Juliet Simms. There were a few cars on the road and several people walking along side us on the streets. I always wanted to know what they were doing. Who they were going to see? Who were they leaving? What diner they were attending? Being a Watcher I had gotten used to knowing. But being human stripped me from that privilege. I was still not able to use my essence again. That must have been the last I had of it.

Juliet parked along the street a few blocks away from the coffee shop. She locked her car and we took the short walk to our beverages. When we walked in Juliet spared no time to stand in line and order a coffee. Instead she ran to a man at the bar and sat down next to him. She tucked her hair behind her ear and shook his hand. He put a hand on her thigh and leaned in close to her.

I took a deep breath and looked around for an empty table. When I looked to my left I saw Andy. He met my gaze and smiled at me. He patted at the empty chair next to him and I walked over to sit.

“Third wheel huh?” He said when I had sat down. I cocked my head and narrowed my eye brows as I set my forearms on the table. He nodded toward Juliet and her friend. “They’re obviously on a date or something. That would make you left out. Therefore, the third wheel.”

“Ohh,” I breathed, “I supposed so.” I smiled looking back to them.

“Hey, me and the guys in my band have a movie night once a month. You want to join?” Andy said making my blush.

I could see his smile change as I tried to hide the heat. “Uhm, yes, that would be nice.” The heat went away and he showed a larger smile.

“Good!” He put his hand on mine. I looked down at our hands. My heart started racing. I pulled away and set my hands in my lap. “I’m sorry…” he said pulling his hand back as well.

I gave him a weak smile and lowered my head. “Just friends.” I smiled with my gaze still toward the table.

When he didn’t say anything I looked up to see that smile of his had faded. A raise of the corner of his mouth was in its place. “Of course, I’m sorry. I should remember what I say.” He chuckled, but he didn’t smile.

I frowned and took a breath to apologize for being rude when I heard a loud slap. I turned around quickly to see that Juliet was on her feet and her friend was holding his face in his hands. She grabbed her coat and spit on him. She walked over to me quite fast and grabbed my hand. I reach out for Andy to say goodbye but Juliet was too fast. Andy ran out with me and waved his hand goodbye. I waved back. Staring at his tall figure in the middle of the side walk. His smile was back.
