Make Me Feel Alive

Just A Normal Day at the Office

"But ---."
"Where is page five, Ms. Tate? And you skipped half of what I was saying here! How incompetent are you at typing up notes?"
"I'm not, I ---."
"Next time if you can't understand something properly, you better damn ask! I had to have these notes for a meeting this morning and half of them didn't make sense!"
Maybe if you would write them where people could understand them, it wouldn't be such an issue! I wanted to shout at Mr. Wireman, but I didn't dare. He could type his own notes if he was going to stand there and yell at me in the middle of the Office.
He continued on for a few more minutes, but I zoned him out, and eventually he left.
For fucks sake, this was ridiculous. I wasn't incompetent --- I was the only secretary they'd had stay longer then five months and not quit, and I was starting to see why now. I glared in the direction of his office, hoping he choked on a peanut or something.
I turned back to the computer, mulling over some kind of revenge plan.
I sighed.
I wasn't any good at revenge. I grabbed the phone as it rang, and then transferred the call to Mr. Burrows, seeing as it was his wife and she was very upset with him for not answering his cell phone just because her sister was in town.
I was on the phone again when some of the bands scheduled for recording came in, and I sent them a smile; why anyone thought having two different bands come in at the same time for a recording was beyond me.
"Um, excuse me." I looked up from scribbling a phone number down, seeing a guy standing at my desk. He looked familiar, but I wasn't sure where I knew him from.
"Can I help you?" I plastered a smile on my face.
"Yeah, I'm looking for Vale Durant? Is she here?"
I hesitated. "She's in a recording session right now, actually. It'll be a while before she's done."
His face dropped slightly. Dammit, where had I seen him before? It was like I knew, but I didn't.
"But you're more then welcome to wait if you like," I said hastily. Vale was the guitarist for one of our bands, and there was always guys coming in asking for her. Most of the time she sent them away in tears, but maybe this was the guy she had been so serious about going out with; she'd made me look at least ten dresses.
"Ah, no, that's okay," the guy shook his head, his long dark hair slipping into his eyes. "I'll just---."
"CC?" We looked over, and the guys face brightened intensely.
"Hey. I thought we had a thing ---." he started.
"We do! I'm sorry, time got away from me," Vale burst, hurrying over to him. "Recording ran late. Let's go now."
What? I stared at her. She couldn't go, she had an appointment like the rest of her band did with Mr. Burrows in twenty minutes.
"Uh, Ms. Durant," I started to rise from my chair in a panic. She might not have to suffer the consequences of skipping a meeting with the producer, but I would. He would yell at me for letting her run off and not having her here.
"It's okay, Morgan," she waved her hand dismissively. "I won't be long."
"But ---."
"I'll call and cancel!" she called as they moved to the elevator, holding hands. "Don't worry about it!"
"But Ms. Durant!"
"Bye, Morgan!" she stepped into the elevator and the door closed, and I stared at it in horror.
Oh, no. What should I do? I sat down heavily, suddenly worried. He would yell at me for this, I just knew it. I need to tell him before the meeting, I realized, and hopped to my feet. I hurried down to his office, and knocked lightly on his door, waiting for him to say something. When he did, I stepped inside anxiously.
"Mr. Burrows?"
"Yes?" he sighed, looking tired. He had papers sprawled across his desk, and he'd taken his glasses off to rub his face. "Um, Ms. Durant just stepped out, and she's unsure if she'll be able to make the meeting this afternoon."
"What?" he raised his head to stare at me. "This is a meeting about their tour! Where was she going?"
"I'm not sure," I hesitated. "She said she'd call."
He glared, not necessarily at me but it still made me nervous "Dammit," he muttered. "All right. Thank you, Morgan."
I nodded, and quickly escaped from his office.
Well, he didn't yell at me, that was always a positive.
I hurried back to my desk and plopped down, glancing at the time. I still hadn't gotten any groceries this week, so another pack of crackers for lunch it was.
Some thing was going to have to give, seriously. Maybe I can squeeze in a night job, I thought, frowning at my desk. I needed to start looking around, anywhere would be nice. I couldn't keep affording to just eat crackers for lunch if I intended my health to stay intact.
And it would just be paft time, right? And maybe not every day. Or every day considering how low my bank account was. God, what if I had to cut off my internet? That would be the very last straw.
I need to find another job, I decided, and picked up my phone to start looking some up.
Or I could answer my text messages first.

Can't wait to see those legs again

Really. Ashley had no shame. I could feel my face reddening, and I glanced around before replying.

Are we talking chicken legs again?

More like your legs.Though that doesn't sound bad either.

I chuckled.

Shouldn't you be doing something? Like working?

Nope.

Well wasnt he lucky. It probably also helped that he had his own clothing line. He would never hurt for anything anymore. Whereas I was worried about spending my change on a pack of crackers for lunch.
Maybe I should cancel Saturday, I frowned. I couldn't really afford to use anymore of my money, I needed to save all that I could so I could start making payments. And technically since we weren't dating, and Ashley had already made clear this was just for kicks, I wasn't about to call Saturday a date. Which meant I was going to pay for my half of it, whatever we did.
Which meant less money for groceries and cat necessities. And Toby was allergic to cheap cat food.
And Trevor had been right, I probably wouldn't be able to live when those loans came due, especially if they wanted a big down payment in the beginning.
Now I wished I did have a car that I could live out of.
This was so embarrassing.
I ran a hand through my hair worriedly.
What was I going to do? I'd never been so bad off before. I reached for my purse, and scrounged around until I found my change purse.
Eh. Maybe I'd just skip lunch today, I could stand to lose some weight.
