We Don't Belong

chapter ii

–andy’s point of view –

“Alright, take out your Gatsby books,” I announced to my third period class. I was half way through the day and I was still dragging ass. After bumping into that girl in the hallway, I’ve had a weird feeling. “Sorry, it’s my first day again,” kept replaying in my head. I don’t know if it was her first day as a student, or a teacher.

I can’t get her out of my mind. She had gorgeous brown hair with a tint of red that went down to about the middle of her back. Her green eyes were perfectly shaped, and as cheesy as it sounds, they sparkled in the dingy school lights. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about it, and if—“Mr. Biersack?” I heard someone say.

I snapped my head up and looked at the Juniors that were sitting in their desks patiently. I was too busy thinking about the mystery girl, that I had completely forgotten I was standing behind my desk in class. “Oh, I, uh, sorry. Um, read chapter seven, take notes on it and then get with a partner and discuss it. You have the whole period.” I was giving them an easy period, because today was not my day. Not only am I fixated on the girl I bumped into in the hallway, I have a new student coming in fifth period.

Thankfully, next period was lunch. I would have time to go and get a coffee and pick up something I could eat quickly and then come back and plan for the new student. I grabbed the envelope out of my side drawer and looked over the paper work again. It had all the other classes she was registered for, and nothing caught my eye. She was an average student. After looking through the three pages I was given, I noticed another three pages that were hidden behind them.

Another new student.

Seventh Period – Introduction to British Literature
Biersack, Andy
Start date: November 10, 2014

Two new students in one day, wonderful. Not to mention, they are siblings. I let out a sigh, something that is no longer foreign to me. It must’ve been loud, because everyone in the class turned to looks at me, a confused look on their faces. “Don’t become a teacher.”
For the rest of the period, I went through all of my lesson plans, seeing where I would have to fit in some things to get the two new kids up to date. I had everything set up that I would need. But, the one thing I really needed was a coffee.

I wanted to go to the coffee shop to get one, but I really didn’t feel like signing out, and then signing back in. I decided on just going to get one from the teacher’s lounge or the cafeteria. I made my way through the halls until I made it into the crazy cafeteria. The room was filled with teenagers, different groups scattered all over the place. I made my way over to the coffee station and grabbed a styrofoam cup. I went over to the caffeinated machine and pressed the button, the hot liquid flowing into the cup. When it was filled almost up to the rim, I reached over to get milk, but someone was standing in my way. “Can you hand me the whole milk?” I asked the girl. She nodded her head and reached to get it. When she turned to hand me it, my heart stopped. It was her. “Thanks.”

“No problem,” She smiled. Oh my God. She is flawless. “Thanks for helping me out before.”

“It’s no problem,” I responded. She was polite too. I looked down to pour the milk into my cup and began to speak. “But I never got your na—“ She was gone.

I put two sugars in my drink and a lid on the cup and walked out of the cafeteria. I looked around for her somewhere, but I didn’t spot her. When I made it safely to my classroom, I plopped down on my desk chair. I brought the cup of coffee to and from my mouth, glancing at the clock every so often. This was a wasted lunch period, and I wanted this day to end. But, I was going to figure out who this girl is before the day actually does end.

“Alright,” I began, clearing my throat. “Is Sadie Marshall here?” I asked, my eyes scanning over the students in the room, all of their faces familiar. Not only was the kid new, but she was also late, which was holding up my plans. Which were going to be the same as my plans third period. “So is she not here or—“

“I’m so sorry I’m late,” the voice that I recognized immediately, even though I’ve only heard it twice. She closed the door and turned to face me. “Is this Mr. Biersack’s cla—“ she stopped short. All the color drained out of her face, as it probably did mine.

–sadie’s point of view –
My day was not going well at all. I’ve been late to all my classes. It took me forever to find someone to sit with at lunch. And the school’s coffee sucks. The only good thing about this day was bumping into that attractive kid before first period.

It was now fifth period, and I was once again lost. The bell rang two minutes ago, and I’m pretty sure I’m in the wrong hallway.

English 11; Biersack, Andy; Room 206

I started looking at the room numbers again, and mentally yelled at myself because I have been walking past it for the past five minutes. I quickly opened the door. The faint talking I heard from the other side of it stopped. I closed the door just ask quick as I opened it, beginning to talk. “Is this Mr. Biersack’s cla—“ I stopped. I looked at the teacher standing in the front of the room and instantly recognized him. He’s the one who helped me in the hallway.
My heart fell into my stomach. He had the same look on his face. When I grabbed my books from him earlier, I felt something. I felt butterflies in my stomach, my heart beat so fast.

Mr. Biersack cleared his throat and began talking. “Uh, you can uh, sit in the seat right there.” He pointed to the second seat in the third row. I nodded, making my way over there. “Okay, class. Take out your Gatsby books and read chapter seven and take notes. When you’re done get with a partner and discuss it. You’ll be doing this the whole period.” His eyes kept flashing over to me while he was talking. His piercing blue eyes made me blush.

I awkwardly sat in my seat. Watching everyone else in the class begin to do as they were instructed. “Sadie,” Mr. Biersack’s voice choked out. I looked at him and he signaled me over. I stood on my wobbly legs and made my way up to the front of the room. He shook his head before looking up at me. “We’re reading Gatsby. You can grab a book from the shelf over there,” he said, motioning over to the self by the windows. “Here are all the papers you’re going to need for it. Read at your own pace and if you’re really far behind don’t worry about it.”

I nodded grabbing the papers from him and going over to get a book. Once I got it, I sat back down in my seat. I flipped through the papers seeing endless discussion sheets, and papers with reflective questions. I opened my book and began reading.

I was really getting into it, but I was interrupted by Mr. Biersack. “I forgot to give you this paper,” he put it on my desk.

It felt unevenly heavy. I turned it over to see a blue post it note on the back, it had black cursive scribbled on it. “Stay after class.”
