We Don't Belong

chapter i

– andy’s point of view –

“Can I get a large coffee.” I had a crisp five dollar bill in my hand ready to pay for the coffee that I needed to jumpstart my morning. The barista set the cup on the counter and took my money. I let out a long sigh, running a hand through my hair as she began to get my change.

“Tough day ahead of ya?” she questioned, closing the register drawer, handing me my change.

“Something like that,” I answered, taking a sip of the black coffee. Straight black coffee is the only thing that got me through the day. “More stressful than tough.” She nodded understandably, which was weird because her job was simply making coffees, but I couldn’t judge. “Well, I better head out. Thank you.” She smiled, and waved.

I wish I still had a minimum wage job. A job where I only had to work a few hours a day. I’ve only had my job for two months and I already see gray hairs forming within my black hair. I got in my car that was parallel parked outside of the only coffee shop in town. I started it up and made my way to the building in which I work. The drive there was no more than five minutes, but I wish it was more than five.

I retrieved my brief case and coffee. I slammed my car door and quickly made sure I had everything I needed before locking up my car and heading into the dated brick building. Not even two minutes in and someone has already approached me. “Hi, Mr. Biersack, sorry to both you, but—“

“It’s before eight-thirty, is it important, Miss. Calvin?” I questioned. She nodded her head and I remained silent, signaling that she should ask her question.

“I really didn’t understand the homework last night. Were we supposed to do the fifth page of the packet? Because that’s what you assigned, but it didn’t make sense,” the brown hair student worried. I sighed, grabbing the packet for her and looking over it.

“Ah. I assigned what was supposed to be tonight’s homework. Don’t worry about it, just try answering the reflective questions on the chapter we have read.” She nodded and made her way back to the table she was sitting at before she approached me.

I continued into the building and into the main office. I signed myself in, my sloppy cursive writing on the paper showing that I made it in on time. I then went to my mailbox and retrieved any mail I needed. I tucked the mail under my arm and maneuvered my way through the hallway until I reached my room. I unlocked the door and turned on the lights, dropping my brief case on my desk and placing the coffee on the coaster I had on the wooden desk. I glanced at the time every so often while going through my mail. The only thing that stood out was the envelope that had big red writing on it.

NEW STUDENT NOTICE

I swiped open the envelope and glanced at the paperwork inside:

Sadie Marshall
Fifth Period – English 11
Biersack, Andy
Start Date: November 10, 2014

“Great,” I muttered to myself. This school was just wonderful with informing me of a new student. I had planning to do with all my other classes, and now I had to planning how I’m going to get this new student up to date. I ran a hand through my hair, letting it go to the back of my neck and begin to scratch it.

I shoved the paperwork back in the envelope and put it in the side drawer of my desk. I opened my brief case getting all the papers I would need for my classes today organized. I put all the classes I had on yellow post-it notes and stuck them to the correct stack of papers. I put them to the side of my desk and looked at the clock 8:41. The bell for first period was about to ring. I grabbed my phone and my now empty coffee cup and left my room real quick.

I went into the bathroom real quick, throwing out my cup and fixing up my appearance. I fixed my black tie, and buttoned up the sleeves of my white button down to just below the elbows. Wearing my sleeves like this only shows a small portion of my tattoos and the school didn’t seem to have a problem with it.

The bell rang and I left the bathroom. I had to make sure I was in my classroom for when my first period came in. On the way there I bumped into someone, the clash causing the girl to drop all of her books. “I’m sorry,” she muttered. “It’s my first day, again.”

–sadie’s point of view –

“So why did you want to come back home?” I questioned my mom as she pulled up to the school drop off.

“Both me and your father thought it would be a good idea for you to finish out high school here, and for your brother to start fresh.” She smiled.

“Well, I think it’s stupid. If we were going to come back here anyway, what was the point of leaving in the first placed?” I asked, annoyed. My brother was just quietly sitting in the back, his head against the headrest as he looked out the car window.

“Sadie, please don’t start. It’s not like you don’t know the people. You’ve been gone for a year.”

“Whatever,” I mumbled as I got out of the car. My brother followed my lead and we both began walking up. We were getting looks from everyone—perks of being the new kids. “This is so stupid,” I said to my brother, Max. He just shrugged his shoulders.

I only knew where the main office was because I was an office aid freshman year. Max and I quickly let the office people know who we were, and retrieved our schedules. We parted ways and I looked at the flimsy piece of paper in front of me. These hallways are so foreign to me now, and I was looking back and forth between my schedule and the room numbers.

In the process of doing this I managed to bump into someone, all my books falling on the ground. This was just great. “Sorry,” I whispered. “It’s my first day, again.” I said as I looked at the mystery person. My heart stopped when I saw the person. He had short black hair, and perfect bone structure in his face. To top it all off, crystal blue eyes. He had on black slacks, and a white button down shirt with a black tie. This kid is a little too dressed up for school.

“It’s fine,” he assured. He had a melodic deep voice. I smiled and looked down at his arms, that were holding some of my books. He snapped me out of my trance. “Uh, you better get to your first class. Or you’ll be late.”

He handed me my books and I thanked him with a warm smile. He started to walk away but I stopped him, “Do you know where room 307 is?” I inquired. He chuckled a little and pointed next to me. My cheeks heated up with embarrassment. “Thanks.”

I could get used to him being one of my classmates.
