We Don't Belong

chapter iii

-sadie’s point of view –
I continued to flip through the pages of the book, my hands trembling while doing so. From the corner of my eye I saw the post it noet on my paper. “Stay after class.”

What he would want to talk about is beyond me, but at the same time I have a feeling it could be about what has been happening in the hallways. It’s my first day back and there’s already a problem I have to deal with.

At this point I just wanted this class to go by slow, but with my luck, it’s going faster than I want it too. I was actually starting the book now, as before I was just skimming through the pages and looking at the packets. But, right as I began actually reading, the loud bell rang,

Everyone in the class sprung up from their seats, shuffling out of the classroom, a few girls that looked so familiar giving me a look as they walked out of the room. Once everyone was out of the room, Mr. Biersack looked up from his papers. He dropped his pen and pushed his chair back, standing up. He walked around his wooden desk, stopping in front of it and leaning back on it.

There was an uncomfortable silence in the air and the tension could be cut with a knife. After a minute of looking around the room and trying to avoid his eyes, I finally stopped avoiding them and looked into those blue eyes. I felt butterflies explode in my stomach and put my head down, feeling embarrassed. “Sadie,” the deep, yet soothing voice let out. “I had you stay for a reason, look at me.” I picked my head up and looked at him, to see that he was already looking at me.

“What for?” I croaked out with a huge lump in my throat.

“I didn’t know you were a student,” he whispered, a glint of regret in his eyes.

“And I didn’t know you were a teacher, you weren’t here before I left.” He looked confused. “I left for my dad’s job. And then we came back. And when I saw you, I thought you were a student.” He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. We both knew we were fucked, even though nothing has happened.

“I know how I feel about you,” he said, leaning his head back and taking a big breath. “But this can’t happen, Sadie. I’m your teacher.”

I knew it was coming. “I know,” I stated. “So, what are we going to do?”

He facepalmed, clearly agitated with everything that is going on. “We’re just going to forget everything today. I’m going to forget I saw you in a way other than a student and you’re going to do the same for me.” I nodded my head, no words being able to come out.

He went back around his desk and started writing on a yellow pass. “But, before you go, I actually did want to talk to you about class,” he started, real quick filling out the rest of the blank spaces. “As I said before, just read at your own pace, and complete the worksheets as you go on.” I nodded, still not being able to speak. He was about to rip the pass of the booklet of them but remember something, “What class?”

Great, so I had to talk. “Free period in the library.” He scribbled something down and ripped off the pass. I picked all of my books up off the desk and walked to the front of the classroom, grabbing the pass out of his hand and giving Mr. Biersack a farewell smile.

I walked to the library with wobbly knees, handing the pass to the lady behind the desk. I turned on my heel and looked around for a table to sit at, as my eyesight approached the back right table the girls from before were signaling me over to them, Skeptically, I began making my way over to them. My butt plopped down on the lone chair, awkward standing going on between the four of us. “Don’t you recognize us, Sadie?” the blonde one spoke up, dropping her pencil into her notebook.

Her voice automatically clicked in my head. “Haley?” I questioned, astonished. “So if you’re here that must mean that you guys are Alex and Ella.” I was pointing in between the two, the switch finally clicking. “I really didn’t recognize you.”

-andy’s point of view –
“We’re just going to forget everything today. I’m going to forget I saw you in a way other than a student and you’re going to do the same for me.” the words came out harsher then I intended, but she didn’t seem to notice. I saw her face drop. She couldn’t possible thing this could happen, right? We finished off our conversation with actual school topics. I wrote her pass and she was on her way. I sat back in my chair, frustrated with everything that was going on.

She just had to be a student. Of course, it’s not like I could have anything with her. I’m her teacher, I see her every day, sitting behind a desk in my class. And right after I see her, I see her brother a period later, him probably being just like his sister. There had to be a way I could get her out of my mind, something, maybe even someone. As much as I didn’t want to think about being with anyone else, I had no other choice. I had to find someone that was like her, but was my age, so our relationship would be appropriate.

There’s something about Sadie, something that makes me not want to be with anyone else. But, there is a thought that will always be in the back of my mind when I see her: “She calls you Mr. Biersack, and she sits behind a desk in your class.”
