Escaping Grace

Shining Knight in Skinny Jeans

There was a flash of movement as my eyes opened, but I couldn't seem to hear anything. Romochka was suddenly hitting the mirror, and shiny things exploded slowly across my vision.
I felt a thud rather then saw it, and I raised a hand to my forehead, feeling damp. i brought my hand back, red swimming in front of my eyes.
I tried to move, but I only managed to make myself feel sick. I pressed my cheek into the cold floor, praying to pass out. I squeezed my eyes closed.
Slowly, I could hear again, and there was a lot of shouting amd shuffling. Finally, there seemed to be some kind of roar, and then more smashing.
Then blessed silence.
"Leah!"
There went the silence.
Someone rolled me, and I groaned in pain as I landed on my back.
Ow. So much ow.
"Leah! LEAH, OPEN YOUR EYES."
Did they have to yell? I squinted, and his face swam above mine.
"A-Andy."
He brushed my hair out of my forehead. "Can you move?" he demanded. I tried, and I whimpered. I turned my face away, but he wouldn't let me.
"Shh, it's okay. Don't cry." I cast my eyes around the room fearfully. "He's gone, it's okay." he brushed at my hair in a soothing manner, and I tried to calm myself. I raised a hand and he caught it quickly.
"No, no, don't try anything," he said hastily. "Lie still. I need to call---." "
No," I gasped. Not Vale. He couldn't tell Vale.
"You need an ambulance."
" I'm... I'm okay," I forced the words from my mouth. "It's not that bad."
He didn't believe me whatsoever.
He ignored me, and pressed his phone against his ear, his knuckles busted and bloody.
He'd saved me, I realized.
He started talking, and I closed my eyes. Vale was going to freak out about the mirror. She'd bought it with our first official paycheck.
"Leah. Leah, you have to stay awake."
"I am," I said in annoyance.
I opened my eyes, and realized after a moment my meds had kicked in. I hoped. I was sleepy and loopy, and at least it kept the pain at bay.
Andy chambered to his feet and ran outside the apartment, apparently looking for the number.
I rolled to my side, and slowly forced myself up. I had suffered worse than this. This was nothing. I probably just had a concussion, and that would go away.
I looked over as Andy came over, stowing his phone away. "You should be lying down!" he exclaimed, and knelt in front of me.
"I'm fine," I said, slightly dizzy. "I just have a headache." "Leah, you don't know that. Hey," his hand cradled my face gently, and he made me look at him. "Please don't move."
I sighed, relenting. He sat down beside me, and I leaned my head back against the couch.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, tilting my head to look at him.
"We were talking, remember?" he looked at me in worry. "The call got cut off, and I didn't know what was going on. I was in town, so it didn't take me long to get here. Thank God I did."
Yes, I thought. There was no telling what might have happened.
Tears scalded my eyes again.
"Shh, Leah, it's okay," Andy hesitantly put his arm around my shoulders. I turned my face away, trying to stop the tears unsuccessfully.
Andy turned, and made me look at him. "It's okay, angel," he said quickly, brushing at my hair. "it's okay. I'm here now. I'm here. Please don't cry."
he pulled me against his chest as I full out sobbed.
"I'll get blood on your shirt," I sniveled.
"I don't care. It's okay."
He wrapped his arms around me loosely, and I probably ruined his shirt with my running makeup and the blood from my forehead.
I felt so sick. I heard footsteps in the hallway, and I jerked in panic.
"Over here!" Andy called, and I looked back.
It was just the paramedics. There was a man and woman, and the woman knelt down in front of me. "Sweetheart, I need you to look at me," she ordered, and I reluctantly pulled away from Andy. Her fingers brushed over my face, surveying the damage, and then she pulled my arms out. My knuckles were red and hurting, and there were a circle of bruises around my wrists and upper arms. There really wasn't that much damage.
"Come on, let's get you downstairs," she murmured, and motioned at the other paramedic. I hesitated, then let him help me to my feet. I wavered, but otherwise I was stable.
"I don't need to go to a hospital," I said as soon as everything stopped spinning. The paramedics frowned. "You might have a concussion, or internal bleeding," the woman informed me as she herded me over the broken door. "The only way to be safe is to go."
"No," I stubbed up. I wasn't going to the hospital where they would stick me with needles and give me pitying looks constantly. I didn't need that and I definitely didn't want it.
The woman pressed her lips together. "Leah," Andy stepped over to me and I glanced up at him, "you need to be at least looked over. To be safe."
"No."
"At least come down to the ambulance," the paramedic urged me. "We will check you out best we can."
I hesitated. That wouldn't be so bad. "Okay," I allowed, and the paramedic glanced behind us. I followed her gaze, seeing a cop I hadn't noticed before. He nodded, and his partner stepped out off the apartment.
This had turned into such an awful day.
