The Devil in the Mirror

Chapter 20

Rose's POV:

I was dressed in a black, silky, floor-length ballgown. The tight bodice of the dress clung to my curvy waist, accentuating both my hips and bust. The skirt of the dress then dripped down my legs like a warefall, the silken material gliding smoothly against my bare legs. My dark hair was pulled over one shoulder and secured with a clip in the back, and I was barefoot.

The sky was ashen, as was the scenery around me: the seemingly lifeless lake before me, the cluster of dead trees, the dry and cold earth below. Not a cloud passed across the dreary sky, and the sun glistened dimly across the plains below.

I frowned at my surroundings, before stooping low to the ground, and running my fingers absentmindedly across the chilling water, my touch causing ripples across the glass-like surface. I smiled at the ripples that skimmed over the water, when an all too familiar chuckles swept my from my tranquility.

She stood behind me, dressed nearly identical, with few alterations to her overall appearance, giving her a more wild look. Her gown was torn and ripped at the hem, the dress barely touching her pale knees. Her left sleeve was ripped off, exposing the milky skin of her shoulder. While my hair was perfectly combed and smoothed over my shoulder, her's was wild and untamed. A wicked smile graced her taut lips, the sight eery and making me shudder involuntarily. The worst, as usual, was her eyes. The grey colouring so familiar and nostalgic, an exact pairing of my own. Only they held a hidden emotion in their cold pools, a form of insanity that felt like it didn't belong among people.

Yet desoute her horrid look, she seemed blissful, content almost, "it's beautiful, isn't it?"

I didnt answer, averting my eye back to the dead lake.

"Ignoring me won't make me go away, you know hun," she tutted unapprovongly, "but alas, I do agree with your lack of voice. This is truly the ideal vision of calmness and peace, the marvelous illusion of death, lovely."

I shivered, her voice light but her words, they were unnerving.

She approached me from behind slowly, gauging my reaction at her close proximity. "I have what some might say, an obsession with the concept of death," she breathed out, visibly relaxing.

I rose an eyebrow questionably, "If you like it so much, then why don't you experience it?"

She laughed, and it sounded like of nails on a chalkboard, but also distantly musical, a horrid sound. "I see you still hold anger towards me, which I don't blame you. But I see you've forgotten my lesson, darling sister."

I played into her trap perfectly and easily, "what lesson?"

she grinned wickedly, "you cannot cut one without cutting the other."

She then shoved me forcefully into the chilly water, holding my flailing body underwater and I could move no longer.

And then I gasped awake.
