The Real Confession of A Complicated Story

"Well..." I started, but I couldn't think enough to try and come up with anything to say.

"Answer us! Who is innocent? What's going on?!" Ashley shouted inches from my face.

I felt my skin get hot as tears threatened to break my feigned composure. Then I heard the sound I didn't want to hear. The sound that told me, without even needing to look or hear her next words, that Ali had cracked.

"I'm sorry Jesse," I heard her simple words as they cut through the thin shreds of any hope I had left of getting out of this situation.

"Like I said before, I could've said no," I replied weakly as I looked to her tear soaked face. The drops were rolling in a steady stream, and her voice was weak. I smiled at her, telling her I didn't blame her for any of this. And I didn't. I could have made the choice to let her do this alone, but in all honesty, the thought of possibly getting away with it and having that fairy-tale ending where we live happily ever after seemed too enticing to pass up.

The truth was that Ali and I were both broken at that point. We had a decent life, sure, but it was all a lie. We were both running from our pasts. We were both depressed. We were both empty shells of people who would rather risk jail than returning to the shithole lives we had with abusive family and no friends aside from each other. And if she wanted to do it all again, I would have.

"What are you two talking about?" Andy asked, this time with a calmer tone even though his anger was plainly written across his face as it twisted his normally chiseled and strong features.

I didn't want to look back to Ashley. I didn't think I'd be able to maintain any sense of coherent ability if I did, so I stared at the 'OUTLAW' tattoo scrawled onto his stomach as I drew in a breath.

"We did it," I said after a few more minutes of silence.

"The other girl is innocent. She didn't do anything. We didn't even know she was in the building, obviously," Ali continued when my voice failed to say another word. I heard her sniffle slightly as she tried to not completely break down.

"What?" Was all Ashley could manage as he and Andy now moved to the chairs in the room.

We could see how confused and angry and frustrated they were. The tension in the room was almost tangeable, it was so heavy.

"How is that even possible? How did you even..." Andy stopped himself mid-sentence as he tried to think, both of them sobering up pretty much completely by this point.

"I'll start from the beginning," Ali spoke. Her words were barely above a whisper, but it was so quiet in the room that they were still clearly audible.

They guys sat there quietly as Ali and I explained how we managed to pull off the explosion, how we planned it out, where we set everything up, when we did it and even how long we had been planning it. When we finished telling them everything, they stayed silent for a few moments. We both watched their expressions nervously as their faces went from blank to annoyed to angry to pissed to confused and then back to enraged as they processed everything.

"Wait, so you're just two fangirls who put our lives in danger so you could spend a few days with us?" Ashley spat the words at us.

"If you want to put it like that, yes. But we didn't put your lives in danger. We knew where you were in the building. Like I said, I hacked into the security feed. We waited until you were safely away from anything that could potentially hurt you," I answered, slightly offended. "Honestly, what idiot would risk killing the person they want to meet? Jesus, give us a little credit. Especially after hearing everything we went through to plan it and how difficult all that was!"

"Seriously?! You two lied to us and framed someone else! And you're the one who's offended?" Andy spoke with disbelief.

Suddenly Ali cracked under the pressure of the situation and broke out into hysterical laughter. I looked over to see a wide smile on her face as she tried to breathe, her laugh barely audible as she doubled over and her face turned red.

"Wow," was all Andy could say in reaction to the site of my sister.

"What about the coffee shop? You didn't think that part of the plan might have been a little much? How could that guy have possibly known he wasn't going to kill anyone firing into the house like that?!" Ashley questioned me about the two incidents since Ali still wasn't even managing to take full breaths, much less put together a sentence. However, that stopped her abruptly as her eyes went to fear.

"We had nothing to do with that. We don't know who that was or why they shot at you," I voiced as calmly and convincingly as I could.

"Andy, please belive me. I know you don't have much reason to right now, but please. Trust me when I say we had nothing to do with that and were just as scared and surprised as you were," she tried.

"Why would we believe you? Why SHOULD we believe you?" He shot back.

"Because our lives were put in danger by that person just as much as yours were. And because why would we continue to do something that could havee hurt or killed us, much less the people we did all this for in the first place? Especially after we already were with you by that point," she reasoned.

"I've heard enough," Ashley said suddenly as he stood up. I felt my heart jump at that point as my stomach dropped to the floor. Ali's eyes tried to plead with Andy's as she watched him follow Ashley towards the door.

"You may as well just stay here. Won't do you any good to go anywhere," he said over his shoulder as they headed to the door.

In that moment my sister and I knew our confession was going to cost us our freedom. They were going to turn us in. I knew they would, and I don't even know why but I felt like I had to try to say something.

"Ashley, I'm so sorry. Please, just-" but I was cut off by his angered glare. I sat in silence next to my sister as we watched the two storm out of the room and, as far as we knew, our lives.
