Our faith will silence the doubt

Chapter 23

Valentin followed Kaili around the airport lost in thought. “And so I was like yeah we should totally sleep together. He won’t mind.” Valentin nodded and did a doubt take. “Wait what?” Kaili laughed, “I knew it. You were totally ignoring me. Loser.” Valentin chuckled, “Sorry, I was just thinking.” “Is it about Elizabeth?” He blushed, “I’m sorry. I know that we’re together now, but.” “Hey, I said don’t worry. Its okay, I don’t expect you be over her in months, and I don’t want you to. First love is always the best.” “Have you ever been in love?” Kaili’s heart skipped a beat. “I think I have. It’s a very nice feeling. “I know. Do you remember why you aren’t together anymore?” Kaili thought for a moment, “Probably my mom.” “Go figure.” “If I see her, I’ll say hi on your behalf.” Valentin laughed. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” “Does it matter?” He let out a soft sigh. “Why can’t I go again?” “Because the groom can’t see the bride with the dress on.” “I don’t have to go with you…I could just stay at home.” “You know your mom doesn’t want that. She knows how much you care about Elizabeth.” Valentin let out a soft sigh. “Very well. I guess I’ll see you in a few days.” “Fer sure.” He gave her a quick kiss as someone escorted her to their private plane.

“Oh isn’t it lovely Kaili. We finally get to spend a few days together.” “I know right!? I’m thrilled. I’m surprised my mom didn’t butt in like she always does.” Mrs. Sumpter chuckled but quickly turned serious. “Well she’ll be busy with the wedding planning all week, although I’m sure she’ll stop and visit every once in a while.” “I hope she doesn’t.” “I’m sorry to be a bother. But would you mind telling me why you dislike your mom so much?” Kaili smiled, “You’re not bothering me at all.” She let out a soft sigh and thought for a moment. “Can I trust in you, Mrs. Sumpter?” Mrs. Sumpter grabbed her hand, “Please do. I swear to you that your secrets are safe with me. I swear on my father’s grave. And please call me Judith.” Kaili smiled, “Thanks you. Well as you know I have some sort of memory problem.” Mrs. Sumpter nodded. “Well, don’t pay much attention to what I’m about to say. I haven’t even told Valentin about this yet, but I feel it isn’t really something I myself have had because of some traumatic experience.” “What do you mean dear?” Kaili frowned and looked out the plane window. “I feel like she’s against me. Everything she does is something that makes me unhappy. And sometimes she yells at me telling me I deserve it, or that I brought this on myself. And I don’t know why. I mean I don’t remember doing anything wrong. In the past few months since I’ve known Valentin I have stopped taking my medicine. And I have discovered that I can remember more things without it. I’ve been able to remember some of the things from my past. I was the co-captain of the cheerleading squad, I had good grades. I’ll admit I wasn’t the best daughter in the world, but I don’t remember doing anything wrong.” Mrs. Sumpter thought for a minute. “Are you trying to tell me that your mother maybe the cause of your memory loss?” Kaili nodded, “Yes. I’m not sure what it is that I did wrong in my past, but I know there’s something she doesn’t want me to know.” Mrs. Sumpter grabbed her hand. “Don’t worry dear, I promise I’ll try to help you remember your past.” Kaili looked out the car window as the gate to the Sumpter’s house opened. Her eyes went wide; this house-mansion was bigger than her home. She wondered how many rooms there where. Now she understood why Valentin had to put a façade for all those people his parents knew. “It’s a bit too big for my liking, but my husband insisted. Valentin likes to have close friends over and the cousins he is most close with.” “The ones that taught him how to dance?” “Precisely. They should be here now. They’ll be joining us at the wedding.” “Really!? That’s wonderful! I can’t wait to meet them.” “I am sure they will be thrilled to meet you as well. Valentin has told them a lot about you.” Kaili couldn’t help but blush. Valentin was such a sweet heart. She wished she had someone other than Angela to talk about Valentin. Angela was her best friend, but there was just some things you couldn’t tell a friend. It was a shame her mother like her was an only child. Her dad and his family didn’t really talk after he had married her mother. They had never really approved of the relationship to begin with.

Kaili looked around Valentin’s room feeling a bit uncomfortable. Mrs. Sumpter had insisted on having her stay in his room, since they would soon be sharing it anyway. She opened her brief case and took a pair of pink sweat pants and a white tank top out. She might as well put the most comfortable clothes on, she would be taking it off often with all the dresses she knew she would have to try on. She couldn’t help but smile, she knew Mrs. Sumpter wouldn’t mind, she had been the one to suggest the idea. She was glad her mom hadn’t come, she could finally be herself. As she put the tank top on there was a knock on the door. She put on the sweater Valentin had given her at the airport and opened the door.
