Remembering Yesterday

Chapter 1:

Zoey sat up breathing heavily. She looked at her alarm clock and let herself fall back on her bed when she saw it was only four in the morning. She still had two hours left until she had to get up and get ready for school. She wiped the sweat from her forehead as she tried to calm her breathing. Who was that little girl she kept dreaming of? She sat up deciding to take a shower. She turned her light, then took her phone from her night stand and walked into her bathroom. She turned on some music and smiled. Music always calmed her.

Zoey walked out of her bathroom a robe around her and a towel wrapped around her head. Why had her mom appeared in her dream? That had never happened before. And why did she feel so connected to Kathie? She walked out of her room and headed downstairs. Once she was in the kitchen she grabbed a bowl and some milk. She ate her cereal silently lost in thought. Maybe Kathie was her sister? She quickly shook her head, no, that couldn’t be. From what she knew, she was an only child. She let out a soft sigh deciding to drop the subject. “Well you’re up early.” She jumped up startled and looked at her mom who smiled at her from the kitchen doorway. “Mom, you scared me.” Mrs. Parker walked into the kitchen and sat next to her daughter. “I called you several times while I was on my way.” “Sorry, guess I didn’t hear you.” “Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?” Zoey let out a soft sigh as she moved her cereal around the bowl.

“Mom, do I have, or did I have a sister?” Mrs. Parker looked at her daughter confused. “No, we’ve told you before. You’re an only child.” Zoey nodded. “Ok…” “Why do you ask?” “Well...I had a dream about a little girl. Kathie.” Zoey looked at her mom when she didn’t respond. “Mom, are you ok?” Mrs. Parker’s eyes turned to hatred, and she looked at her daughter. “Yes, I remember her. She’s one of your cousins.” “Really? Why haven’t I seen her at any family reunions?” “Because, she was a bad influence. She and your aunt, and that boy.” “Dennis?” “How do you know about him?” “He was also in my dream.” She watched her mom scowl, “Yeah…well now you know who they are.” “What did they do that was a bad influence?” Mrs. Parker stood up. “It’s getting late, you should get dressed and get ready for school. Did you finish your homework last night?” Zoey nodded as she stood up. “Good now go.”

Zoey got in her car wondering why her mom had acted so strangely when she talked about her cousin Kathie. From what she had seen in her dreams, Kathie hadn’t done anything bad. Yeah, she was clearly a spoiled child, but what kid wasn’t? She plugged her phone onto the stereo and smiled as Cher Lloyd’s song, want you back, started to play. She turned down her car window and turned up the volume. She sang on the way to school not caring if anyone heard.

“Zoey!” Zoey looked at James smiling. “Hey, what’s up?” “The girls are going crazy trying to find you. They want to know if you got the CD for practice.” Zoey took a CD case out of her purse and smile, “Check.” James let out a soft sigh, “Thank goodness.” He helped her out of her car and proceeded to close the door. “Well aren’t you being awfully kind today?” He gasped pretended to be offended. “When have I not?” “When you don’t want something.” He frowned and shook his head. “That hurt.” She laughed and playfully pushed him. “Just tell me what you want.” He gave her his puppy dog eyes and pouted. “I want to ask Cassandra out on a date.” She raised an eyebrow at him questionably. “And?” “I want you to help me. My mind goes blank whenever I’m near her. I don’t know what’s wrong with me!” “Aww, is someone in love?” He blushed and shrugged. She giggled and patted his back, “I got your back.” His eyes lit up and he grinned, “Seriously!?” “Of course, anything for my baby. Besides you two would make a great couple.” “Great! Just don’t call me baby in front of her.” She rolled her eyes as they walked into the cafeteria.

James was Zoey’s best friend. They were practically brother and sister. They had known each other ever since she moved to Illinois when she was three years old. He was older than her by a year, but due to health issues when they were in fifth grade, James lost a year of school and now they were in the same grade. She was glad for that; she felt she needed him with her at all times. James had a childish face, he didn’t appear to be a fully grown nineteen year old. He had grey eyes with a tint of blue, a snake bite, and his jet black hair was almost down to his neck. It was swept to one side and it made him look like a cute nerd with the glasses he wore. Of course they weren’t his actual glasses, he just liked to act cute. And it worked, girls flocked him all the time.

“Here comes Cassandra!” Zoey looked up and smiled. “Hey Casey.” Cassandra smiled and sat down next to James. “Hey guys. Is it me or is it cold today?” Zoey shrugged, “It’s kinda chilly.” James nodded, “It-its-winter is just around the corner,” He blurted out. Zoey rolled her eyes, James was like putty in Casey’s hands. Casey giggled and moved closer to James. “Are you cold? You’re stuttering an awful lot.” James nodded embarrassed. “Casey, James and I were just talking about how great it would be if we could go to the moves this weekend.” Casey grinned, “Really? I’d love to.” James grinned, “Cool. Is Friday okay with you?” Casey nodded, “Yeah. Is six ok with you?” James nodded. “How about you Zoey, are you okay with Friday at six?” Zoey frowned, “Friday? I’m sorry guys, I think I’m going to have to say no. I have practice that day till six.” Casey frowned, “I guess we’re going to have to leave it for another day.” “No! It’s okay really. Why don’t you and James alone?” Casey looked at James who looked back at her nervously. “I don’t know…” “Please, I insist, I’m going to be busy all next week as well. You know with the game being in two weeks, the girls and I gotta practice none stop.” James smiled at Casey, “I think it would be fun if we went together.” Casey smiled, “Well…okay. It’s a date then.”
