HEART OF FIRE

When Sophie got home that evening she’d nearly forgotten what had happened until she saw her sister that is.

“Hey Sophie,” Amber hugged her big sister, “How was College?”

Sophie tried her best not to grin like the Cheshire Cat when the events of lunch time came flooding back.

“It was good, how was school?”

“Meh boring as usual. I did another drawing though!”

Amber dragged Sophie to her room and showed her a drawing that was on her desk. It was of Andy.

“What do you think?”

“Awesome,” Sophie said, “Your drawing gets better by the day!”

“Just like your dancing! Because we both practice!”

Sophie giggled, “Exactly!”

“Anyway I’m going out! Mom’s at Auntie Tina’s… Uncle John has had another fall. Let her know I’m out when she gets back unless I’m back before her…”

Sophie nodded, “I will… have you got your phone?”

“Yep.”

“Good have a nice time…”

“Thanks! See ya...”

Sophie watched her sister skip off downstairs before turning back to look once more into her sisters’ room. It was hard to believe that just a few short hours ago; she had been sat with the very guy whose face adorned her sister’s room.

Andy had seemed a really nice guy… he was kind to her, he seemed caring, and she had to admit he was pretty good looking too. She could see now why Amber found him so attractive.

Sophie left her sister’s room and went into her own. She opened her bag and took her dance shoes and text books out. As she did, something fell to the floor. She picked it up… it was the napkin Andy had wrote his number on. Sophie sat on her bed and stared at the napkin for a while. What was she thinking? She didn’t like getting too close to people… not after what had happened… and yet Andy did seem different. Then again they all do when you first meet them. But still…

Sophie sighed and grabbed her phone, “It’s my funeral…” she muttered.

Hi Andy its Sophie x

Less than a minute later …

Hey Sophie, how are you? X

I’m alright, you? X

I’m fine how was College? Was u late? X

No I wasn’t x

Good. Wuu2?X

Sat in my room. U? x

Still in the studio… Listening to CC x

Who? X

CC… he’s our drummer x

Oh okay x

Did you tell your sister? X

No I haven’t x

Fair enough x

I don’t want her harassing me… or you x

Understandable x

Thanks again for today. That was quite a memorable lunch J x

Sophie suddenly heard the sound of tires pulling up on the gravel outside.

Oh my mom is back I have to go a family issue has happened I need to make sure everything is okay x

Okay x

Sophie put her phone down and went downstairs to greet her mom.

“Hey Sophie sweetheart, how was your day?”

“Hi mom it was great. Amber told me about Uncle John is he okay?”

“Yes sweetie he’s fine now nothing serious.”

“That’s a relief. Oh speaking of Amber as well, she’s gone out.”

“Okay. So what made your day so great?”

“Oh…” Sophie bit her lip and looked and the white marble floor, “Well I umm went to the mall for lunch today and I sort of made a friend.”

“Oh how nice Sophie that’s great! A boy or a girl?”

“Boy … his name is Andy. He’s a little older than me.”

“A little older?”

“Umm… he’s 23…”

“Hmm that’s alright…”

“Mom! We’re just friends… nothing like that…”

“I know Soph, but you know it’s been 2 years now sweet, a girl your age should be seeing boys, despite what you’ve been through.”

“But I don’t want to go through that again…”

“Sophie not everyone is like Jonathon…”

“But it’s so hard to trust someone now… I can’t be too sure anymore…”

“You can’t go the rest of your life not trusting people Sophie or you aren’t going to get anywhere…”

Sophie sighed, her mom was right.
