The clock on my car stereo read: 7:08 p.m. The sound of my Mustang’s engine calmed me down. I drove around downtown St. Louis looking for a good place to eat. I strayed away from any touristy looking places; they all looked way too crowded for my liking. I wanted a quiet little café where I could eat a little meal and have a nice latte. I settled for just going to Starbucks and getting a muffin and latte there. I hadn’t eaten anything all day, but I really wasn’t all that hungry.

I found a parking space out front and parked my car. Stepping out, I put a dollar in the parking meter and headed inside. The little Starbucks was completely empty, expect for a blonde woman standing behind the counter. She flashed me a smile as I made my way towards her.

I pushed my bangs out of my face and muttered, “I’ll have a tall, white mocha latte, and…a chocolate muffin please.”

“Okay. That’ll be $7.15.” I handed her a ten-dollar bill, she handed me my change, and I made my way over to a little booth.

I pulled my phone out—to my surprise, I had 4 missed calls from Andy. Still a little bit hurt over the incident, I decided it was best to just talk to him when I got back to the hotel room.

The smiling barista brought my latte and muffin over to my table, setting it down in from of me.

“Thank you.”
“Have a nice day.”

I looked around the quaint coffee shop, pleased by the artwork and decor.

I finished my muffin and latte, heading to the closest Walmart. I drove through streets lined with bars, restaurants, businesses that were closed. I really liked it here, even though there were a lot of people.

I strolled through the aisles looking for the hair dye section. Looking at all the different colors of dye, I picked up a box of pink Splat hair dye and headed for the check out. I picked up and toothbrush and toothpaste because I’d forgotten to pack mine.

This store was pretty empty, a few people here and there. I went to a self-checkout and made my purchase, dragging myself back out to the car. I was honestly dreading going back to the hotel room. I was here to have a good time, but it’s gone wrong.

I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket, pulling it out to find Andy calling me. I let it ring,
uninterested in talking to him. We were going to talk face to face; not until then.

Taking a deep breath in, I slid the room key into the handle, waiting for the indicator light to turn green. I pulled the door open, slowly walking inside. I swung my jacket off, throwing it on the couch. I slid my feet out of my boots and kicked them to rest by the couch legs.

Bracing myself for a fight, I sulked towards the bed. Andy was sitting on the edge of it, staring out the window at the downtown lights.

“Andy…” He turned around to face me. “I think we need to talk….”
