Sink Your Teeth Into Forever

Chapter 54

Andy's POV
"Look to the western sky!" I bellowed. The incoming helicopters where coming in low, trying to stay below the swirling storm. I felt the rest of the band shift so we all were facing the same direction. We couldn't see them yet, but we could feel them. The sound of the blades buffeted my ears, there was more than one, probably more than three. The blades beat out of time with each other giving me head ache.
"We've got the advantage, we know they're here but they don't know we're here yet," Jinxx shouted into my ear over the noise.
"He's right guys, we should hide and surprise them," I shouted to everyone else.
"Where in the world do you plan on hiding?" Mr. Peterson asked. I didn't answer.
"Jinxx cover us," I ordered. A second passed and I felt the sand begin to pull out from under my feet. Jinxx dug us a pit, right out from under us until we were about seven feet deep. Then he covered the hole with sand, hopefully making the ground above look normal. Once that was settled he lit a little fire in the palm of his hand so we could see each other. Mr. Peterson's face was astounded, he looked like he was ready to begin blubbering incoherently again so I put a finger to my lips to silence him before he could get started.
We listened. The now muffled sound of the helicopters was still getting louder.
"Here's the plan, we wait until they land and come out onto the island, then we come up from the ground, human or wolf whichever you prefer, and we knock some heads together. Remember don't kill anyone unless you know that it's Braikens," I said. Everyone nodded. So we waited. In the dim light of the fire I could see everyone's eyes closed or tilted above listening to the sounds. The chopping had become even louder, they had to be right on top of us at that point. Then one by one the sounds of the blades halted and we were thrown into silence. My keen ears searched out the sounds of human life. I heard it then. The faint sounds of hushed footsteps. They were expecting us. The footsteps of multiple people wandered about the island. One drifted in our direction, and then made it's way right over head with bits of sand tumbling down on our heads. The steps stopped right over CC's head. He looked up and then looked me.
"Go," I whispered. CC's face broke into a grin and he leaped straight up and through the sand. I heard a scream and watched his back paws pull out of our little hovel. Then I heard gunfire.
"Go!" I yelled. We all burst out of the sand, except Mr. Peterson, who I will say, may have spent a bit of time digging himself out. Ash and I sprung out human, while Jinxx was a wolf. Jake was performing a beautiful dance of going from wolf to human and back again as he bounded about knocking people out. CC appeared unhurt as he ran around like a blur grabbing people's clothes in his maw and tossing them around. Some people appeared to break an arm or a wrist as they fell or they would become disarmed and then leave stay helpless on the ground. Jinxx was a whirlwind. He rarely ever showed his true power for fear of hurting someone, but here he was hovering above the ground using winds to support his wolf form while sand, water, and fire swirled around him so thickly that I could barely see his green glowing eyes. He followed CC around pinning the people CC disarmed to the ground with out hurting them. He bound them to the ground with rock by their wrists and ankles so that they couldn't be moved.
For me everything slowed down, I could see the bullets whizzing past me and hear shots being fired individually. I had to find Braikens, Ash and I had to kill him. Ashley took off across the sand he had caught Braikens scent and was after him, I followed behind going as fast as possible, though Jinxx's whirlwind was making things a bit more difficult due to the now even higher winds. We covered our eyes against flying sand, Ash was running towards a helicopter parked on the sand. Braikens was there, I could smell his evil already. As we approached he appeared in the doorway of the helicopter.
"Stop right there, Beasts," He barked holding up what appeared to be a controller for a remote controlled toy. Ash and I stopped.
"You take one more step and every person on this island will be electrocuted to death," He threatened holding up the remote.
"You have to stop, this is madness!" Ashley yelled as rain began to fall.
"Call it whatever you want but you'll be dead, I've got wires laced throughout the sand on this island and this button will send an electric charge through it and kill us all!" Braikens screamed, his eyes wild.
"You don't want to do this, man," Ashley negotiated.
"Oh yes I do, this world will be without five less demons on earth and I will be remembered as the man who exorcised the demons with technology,"
"No you won't, their's a hundred innocent people underground that you'll kill too, just put it down and lets talk," Ash said calmly. I was trying to find a way to leave the situation without Braikens noticing, but it seemed impossible and I didn't want to edge him on. I kept praying that Ashley would keep up his banter while I thought of a way out. Leave it to the guys with no helpful powers to fight the criminal mastermind with the big red button of doom. I looked behind Braikens and out into the door behind him, where I saw to my surprise, Mr. Peterson standing behind him. He was holding a piece of paper up that I could barely read. When it came into focus a smug joy came over me.
"I disabled the wires, his button is useless" read the paper.
"Are you sure?" I mouthed over to him, and he nodded.
"Why don't you press that button lets just see what it does," I said to Braikens.
"I will do it, and it will kill you and the people you love," He yelled back to me.
"Nah, I really want to see what it does," I said with a shrug.
"Andy, he's serious don't push him," Ash warned. I waved off his comment with a dismissive hand.
"What if I did this?" I said, and I put one foot up on the helicopter's running board.
"I warned you!" Braikens screamed as he pressed the button, and behold nothing happened. He trembled with rage and pressed the button again.
"Why isn't it working? Why isn't it working?" He screamed his voice becoming shrill. I was leaning against the helicopter smugly when my plan failed. Braikens moved so fast that I barely saw him there was a glint of metal and an ear shattering bang that matched the sharp pain in my chest. I looked down at the blood soaking through the front of my shirt I looked up at Ashley as my knees became weak. He stared back at me in shock, not yet fully understanding what had happened. I didn't feel it as I collapsed onto my back, staring up into the now pouring rain. My tears mixed with the rain and the last thing I saw as my ears rung and the world faded to black was Ashley covered in someone else's blood screaming over me.
