An Unexpected Love

Chapter Thirteen-Avery

The sun was high in the sky and Avery was huffing and puffing as she dug her sneakers into the dirt path that she was currently struggling to make her way over. Avery, clad in the only work out pants she owned and a baggy BVB tank, and Britt were walking Wednesday up Runyan Canyon and it was kicking her ass. She hadn’t slept well the night before and then she had woken up to a text from CC, asking her what kind of food she liked. Where had he gotten her number from? A quick look on the couch, where Britt was still fast asleep, told Avery everything and she only grumbled as she texted the drummer back quickly.

Avery knew Britt had been up late the night before-talking with Ashley as she had heard the two love birds chirping at one another when she got up to go to the bathroom. Avery was happy for Britt-the girl seemed really happy as they hoofed it up the canyon, her bright yellow tank and black pants making the small girl seem even more bubbly than normal. The thing was Avery was incredibly cynical when it came to love and seeing Britt fall so quickly for someone made Avery nervous. She liked Ashley well enough-he made Britt feel good about herself and he was a pretty funny guy, but the blonde couldn’t shake the feeling in her stomach.

What was he getting out of all this? Thankfully Brittany had come to her senses and decided to come live with Avery instead of living with someone who she had only known for a total of two days. The two girls would have fun though-they had lived together in college in the dorms and so they knew one another’s nasty little habits. Brittany knew that Avery was messy-dishes weren’t her thing and neither was laundry. Avery knew that Brittany usually left the bathroom looking like a hurricane had hit it and yet the two girls connected on a level.

Right now they were both connecting on the level of being completely fucking exhausted. Avery sighed in relief as they reached the top of the canyon and were now looking out over the entire landscape of LA. This wasn’t where Avery had thought she would live-she had come out to UCLA to get a degree in Audio Communications, had changed her major to Audio Engineering and found that she liked Audio Visual work the best. Britt had a degree in Audio Communications and so she needed to be somewhere like LA for work, but Avery missed home.

It was September and usually the leaves would be turning and the wind would be growing chilly. No-not in LA…everything stayed warm in LA. Avery missed baggy sweaters and leggings-she wore boots all the time but that was because she loved them and refused to give them up. It just didn’t seem like fall when you would rather drink a cold beer than a mug of hot cider with a shot of whiskey in it. She had a fireplace in her apartment, which was more for show than anything and all of her sweaters she had left at home with her mother and father back in Virginia.

“Ugh…who’s idea was this again?” Avery said as they came to a stop and she found herself bent over, her hands resting on her knees as she held on to Wednesday’s leash tightly. She was out of breath, her bangs were sticking to her skin and she felt over heated.

“Uh-yours.” Brittany gasped. She too was bent over, her yellow tank top hanging off of her frame and Avery only grunted as she straightened and arched her back.

“Next time remind me how stupid I can be sometimes…” Avery said as she rubbed her stomach, a grimace on her face. They had stopped by IN-and-Out Burger on the way over and her fries were making a comeback.

“Well it wasn’t my idea for you to eat a double with fries before climbing up the Mount Everest of LA.” Brittany was smirking at her, her cherry red lips sipping at her water as Avery just rolled her eyes and pulled her phone out of her pocket.

“Yeah well I needed the energy. Ugh…” Avery said as she looked down at her phone and noticed that CC had texted her again. They were going on their date tonight and Avery was less than thrilled…stupid fucking bet.

CC: So dress comfy tonight-maybe bring a sweater ; )
Avery: What are you going to do if I don’t show up?
CC: Cry?
Avery: I would be okay with that…
CC: Just meet me at Santa Monica Pier by six…okay?
Avery: Fine, fine…see you tonight

“Texting with someone?” Brittany teased as she looked over Avery’s shoulder and the blonde only blushed, her ears turning bright red as she stuffed her phone back in her pocket and looked around. Time to go back down the Canyon-much easier that coming up.

“Yeah well we all can’t have our secret rendezvous at midnight…” Avery joked and Brittany only laughed softly as she pushed her best friend and the two girls began to head back down.

“Hey! It wasn’t midnight…it was eleven and he missed me.” Brittany defended as they passed a couple who had a large dog that sniffed at Wednesday with interest.

“Aww-how sweet. What will the two of you be doing this evening? I’m guessing you’re going out with him…” Avery said as they turned the corner and stopped for a moment. Avery was fidgeting with her shoe, but Brittany knew that she was doing it because she was nervous.

“Not telling. What about you? What does CC have in store for the two of you on your very first date?” Brittany asked and then giggled as Avery only groaned and pulled her mint green Ray Bans down over her tired eyes.

Brittany knew that this ‘I don’t wanna go out with the cute boy’ routine was just an act-a defense mechanism that Avery threw up any time she didn’t feel comfortable. Avery-while Britt loved her-had a small problem in the relationship department…she had to be in control. She was the best at everything-video games, date planning and everything in between. But now it seemed like Avery had met her match and it was driving the girl crazy. Brittany knew that she and CC would get along though-it was almost like they were made for one another.

When they had been coming back to LA on the bus, Brittany had shown CC some pictures of Avery that she’d had on her phone. He laughed at the ones from their Cabo trip-Avery walking around in a huge straw sombrero with a half empty bottle of tequila in her hand. CC seemed intrigued, he even expressed an interest in meeting Avery and that made Brittany smile.

Avery was her best friend-her sister and sometimes even her mother-and she knew that the girl had been through a lot of shit in the past few years. Her last boyfriend, band guy number three and the worst yet, had screwed around while on tour with not one but two girls and Avery had found out through the always reliable Twitter. Things had ended in a nasty screaming match between the couple and Avery had thrown all of his things over her balcony in to the street.

“I honestly have no idea. He won’t tell me…says he wants to surprise me.” Avery said as she swept her bangs from her face and looked to Brittany.

“Well that’s sweet…right?” The smaller girl said and Avery only groaned. Brittany wanted things to always work out and Avery was always the one to doubt everything-she didn’t get as hurt that way.

“Yeah…I suppose.” Avery said as they finally made it to the car and Brittany stopped, hanging on to the open door before getting into Avery’s beloved Impala.

“Avery-just promise me you’ll give CC a chance…you might be surprised.” Avery only rolled her eyes as she mirrored Britt’s pose and looked the girl right in her eyes.

“I’ll give him a chance, but if he surprises me with anything overly cheesy…I’m holding you responsible.” The girl said as she smirked, her lip ring glinting in the sunlight before she got into the car and revved the engine.

“What are you going to wear?” Brittany asked as she got in and buckled her seat belt. Avery said nothing as she just turned up the radio, Black Veil Brides blaring from her speakers. Avery only smirked, her hazel eyes covered by her sunglasses and she only smiled as she yelled out over the music.

“I don’t know! I’m still trying to convince myself to even show up!” Brittany only rolled her eyes as she rolled the window down and let the cool air hit her in the face.

Avery was in for an interesting night…hopefully the feisty camerawoman would play nice…
