Land Of F.E.A.R

Plans

Man worships the gospel that they preach to you
Living like a demon, a burden left to prove

Persephone laid in her bunk, the sound of CC’s light snoring making her smile as she tried to drift in and out of sleep. At first sleeping in a room filled with people had been strange, but now-now it was comforting. They had all retired to bed nearly an hour ago-everyone was asleep except for Perry and she didn’t think she would ever fall asleep. She was simply too nervous, her hands shaking as they laid on top of her covers and she could feel a headache coming on. It wasn’t that she was scared to fall asleep, she just had a very big job to accomplish once she did succumb to her slumber.

Persephone was finally ready-after having been with the Wild Ones for over a month and dream jumping every night since that first time, she was ready. At least she thought she was ready, but the feeling in the pit of her stomach was telling Perry that maybe she was wrong. She was going to dream jump once she fell asleep, but this wasn’t just any dream jump-it was the most important one of all. She was going to try and attempt to jump into the dreams of the Chancellor. This was important as the Wild Ones and a few select members of the Legion were leaving in a days’ time to seek out HQ. They would be looking for two things-survivors and equipment.

Persephone could feel herself drifting to sleep and deep in her heart she knew she could do this, but she couldn’t help but feel scared. What if she woke him up while she was dream jumping? Persephone hadn’t been sure how her power worked before, but after doing it for a month she had sort of figured it out. Being able to jump to the HQ meant one thing-one of the guards who she felt connected to was sleeping and she could focus on his dream. He was obviously sleeping on the job, but that didn’t really matter because it afforded her the ability to look for people who were still alive. Now she was going to jump in to the Chancellor’s dream and she had had to focus on a photo of him for the past two days before going to bed. Nothing had worked and she kept winding up back in the dungeon of HQ.

Now she felt like she was floating and just as Persephone closed her eyes before falling asleep, she locked eyes with the picture that she had taped to the underside of the bunk above her. It was a press photo of the Chancellor and a photo that everyone had had in their homes back in Wickenburg. He was looking off into a sunset, his sunken eyes even more shadowed than usual and his black hair, which was normally covered by a hood, was slicked back and shone in the light. Persephone felt an anger enter her heart as she fell into a light slumber and she knew that with that hate and anger she would finally be able to do something that she had thought was impossible.

She would finally dream jump into the Chancellor’s head and be able to, hopefully, find out what his plans were.

Persephone looked around and what she saw fueled her anger even more than she thought was possible. The room she was in was covered in lush furnishings, the velvet couches and chairs looking soft and comfortable and it made her think of the old beat up couch that her family had owned in Wickenburg. On one gleaming wooden table sat a half eaten meal and it was enough to feed three families. A large turkey, it’s skin ripped off and sitting in a pile on the floor, along with bowels filled to the brims with things like potatoes, corn, asparagus and many other things that Perry hadn’t seen or eaten in years. It was all just sitting out, rotting in the warm air and Perry huffed as she walked past and kept looking around. The walls were covered with wallpaper and as she touched it Persephone felt the soft silky material that he had used to cover his walls. She felt angry and Persephone knew that many others would be angry as well.

They had all lived in squalor for years, thinking that it was for the greater good and that all of them would be made equal. Grey clothing, grey curtains blocking out the world-grey everything! She had lived in a grey world, isolated and alone and here was the Chancellor-their great leader-living it up like a king or a sheik! It was outrageous-it was infuriating and it made her want to pick up that carving knife sitting on the edge of the table and seek the Chancellor out and take care of him herself. It would be so easy to sneak up on him as he slept and slash the sharp blade across his exposed neck, but no, no they had to wait. Silently Perry moved from the room, passing priceless paintings that lined the walls as she left through a thick oak door and was now standing at the beginning of a long hallway.

There was no telling which room he slept in, but Persephone only hoped that she wouldn’t wake anyone with the loud thumping of her heart. Her bare feet met a soft carpet and she only shook her head as she looked down and caught the pattern in the moon light shining in through a window-Persian, of course. This was a palace-there were so many rooms and as Perry popped her head into each and every one she could see that the Chancellor lived alone. What of his fellow leaders? The ones he spoke of on F.E.A.Rcast often? Did they live in homes of their own? Silently Perry continued down and she noticed that a familiar noise was echoing off of the walls the closer to the end of the hall she got. She smirked as finally she realized what the noise was and she only shook her head as she kept walking.

Apparently the Chancellor snored worse than CC did.

The final door at the end of the hall laid before her and Persephone reached out a shaking hand towards the knob. She turned it slowly, breathing in through her nose and out through her mouth and finally with one final breath, Persephone pushed the door open. It took her a moment for her eyes to adjust, but as they did so Perry felt her anger rise to the top. The bed the Chancellor was resting in was huge with four posts and soft looking bed clothes. He was asleep somewhere under those clothes and Perry was tempted to kill him as he slept, but something else caught her attention. Over on one wall, opposite the huge bed, was a map. As Perry walked towards the map, she felt her heart stop-it was identical to the one that was posted in the planning room back at camp.

It was a map of Arizona and to the East of Wickenburg sat a black pin-the camp of the Wild Ones. Persephone felt her heartbeat speed up-they knew, F.E.A.R knew where their camp was and they were obviously planning a raid on it. She had to get back to tell Andy-she had to get back to her own dreams so that they could figure out a plan. If only she could take things back with her! Perry quickly shuffled through some papers that laid on top of the desk below the map and as her eyes scanned over the words her face began to grow numb. The Wild Ones had a plan, but it seemed like F.E.A.R did as well and they had more means to accomplish their plan than the Wild Ones did.

As she looked over the papers on the desk, Persephone had her back to not only the door out of the room, but also to the bed sitting in the corner. She riffled through the papers, the shuffling noise echoing out through the room. Her back was bent over and Persephone was smiling as she read over things as quickly as possible-she was so enthralled by what she was reading that she couldn’t sense that she had woken the slumbering Chancellor up and that he was now sleepily approaching her. Persephone stopped shuffling as she heard the floorboards behind her creak and her scream got caught in her throat as she turned and locked eyes with the one person who frightened her the most.

The Chancellor

“How did you get in here?” He asked, his deep voice still filled with sleep and Persephone dropped the papers she was holding and watched as they fell to the floor and scattered.

“I-um-I walked?” She said as she backed up, her hips bumping in to the desk and rattling the things that were sitting on top. She could feel her heart beating out of her chest and as the Chancellor seemed to be waking up, his dark eyes looking her over, he seemed to recognize her.

“Persephone Jones-I’ve heard a lot about you. What, exactly, are you doing in my bedchambers…” He was coming closer to her, his gnarled and long fingers reaching out for her and Perry only took in a deep breath and reached behind her. There was a pile of papers on the desk and as her fingers gripped them, Perry felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“Shy I see-no matter. I have a use for you Persephone Jones…F.E.A.R could use a dream jumper like you.” He smiled at her, his crooked teeth gleaming in the moonlight as he looked down at her. Perry felt like her heart was in her throat and he only kept smiling at her.

“How did you-“

“How did I know? I know a lot about you Persephone Jones. I know about your parents, your sister and most of all…I know where you sleep at night. I know because I’ve been watching you Persephone…I’m always watching…” He laughed then, a manic and deep laugh that made the chills run up and down her arms.

“Y-you can’t hurt me anymore!” She said loudly as Perry ripped her arm out of his grasp and the Chancellor only smiled as she moved away from him and closer towards the door. She had to get out of there-she had to run.

“Perhaps not, but Marguerite still holds F.E.A.R in her heart and as long as we are in her heart…she will come back to us.” He laughed then and Persephone found herself running. She ran out of the room, her mind racing and her eyes filling with tears.

Persephone ran down the long hallway, kept running until she was out of breath and as she looked over her shoulder and saw that no one was chasing after her, she knew that it was almost time for her dream jumping to end. With the Chancellor being awake, soon she would wake as well and when she did she knew she had to speak with Andy-with all of the Wild Ones. The things that she had seen-had read-would change their plans vastly and she only hoped that she would get to them in time.

F.E.A.R. was coming and they would stop at nothing until the Wild Ones were dead…including her sister.

@SummerTimeDreamer

Good thought, but it won't happen. Andy lost his true love and Perry lost her's-they're just friends.
