Phoenix's POV
We grabbed the bags and silently slipped out the back door. I was surprised to find that it was almost sunset. It had taken us almost three hours to pack up the whole house. That was shocking, because we really didn't own that much stuff. Sammi was carrying most of the stuff, but not one single thing was mine. It was all Andy's. He had so much makeup and shit you wouldn't believe. It was almost funny, and I would have laughed under different circumstances. I had much less stuff than my older brother, and I was a girl. A girl who absolutely could not survive without my makeup. I had a backpack, two full duffel bags, and a big tote. Sammi had three times that much.
"Are you sure you don't want me to carry anything?" I asked her for the billionth time.
She huffed and shook her head. "No. It will just slow you down. You're the priority. We've been over this!"
"I don't care. It's not fair that you have to carry all of my brother's stuff!"
Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I whirled around at the speed of light, a scream catching helplessly in my throat. My shoulders slumped in relief when I saw that it was only CC, another of Andy's best friends. Beside him was Jake, the only guy I had ever told almost all my secrets to. Of course, he didn't know about the scars, but he would soon.
CC grinned at me, most likely trying to make the best of the current situation. "You almost shit your pants." He commented, referring to the look on my face.
"Well, yeah. It's the middle of the night and we have to get me out of the city. Of course I'm scared."
Jake laughed quietly. "Scared? Hell no. You were terrified!"
I glared at him and grabbed most of the bags out of Sammi's hands. I shoved them at Jake and CC. "Here. You be useful and carry these."
CC shook his head, but obeyed. "Andy, Jinxx, and Ashley will meet us outside the city limits. They had to pack up their stuff and ours since we had to help you guys."
"Is Ashley okay? I mean, he was in the hospital." I instantly regretted the words as soon as they left my mouth. It didn't help that Jake was now looking at me with an unreadable expression on his face. CC, on the other hand, was totally oblivious.
"Yeah, he's fine. Well, actually, I don't know." I felt my face go whiter than a sheet and swayed slightly.
"W-what do you mean?" I tried not to stutter, but it was impossible. I felt like someone had ripped out my insides, torn them to shreds, stitched them back together incorrectly, and shoved them back in haphazardly. In other words, I felt really, really sick.
"Well, he kept asking about you."
"And that's not normal because....?" Sammi spoke up, obviously noticing that something was horribly wrong.
"Well, he was acting like you needed him or something."
I exhaled slowly. I didn't know what to say. The truth was, I did need Ashley. The second I smacked him, it flipped a switch. It affected me. And he most likely didn't want a steady relationship. He was probably just trying to get into my pants so that he could prove to himself that he could have anything he wanted, even his best friend's little sister. I shuddered at the thought as a single tear slipped down my face, unseen. I didn't want my heart broken.
I turned sharply on my heel before anyone could notice that I was crying over Ashley. "Lets go." I called over my shoulder. I walked quickly to the alley, dropping my bags so that I could lift the large metal plate that guarded the entrance to the sewer. It wasn't the most desirable of paths, but it was the only way we could get out of the city without being detected.
I slipped in and retrieved my bags, waiting until Sammi and CC were down with me. I looked up and watched Jake as he slid the cover back on, plunging our surroundings into darkness.
