Imagine Me and You

A pair of black boots tapped against the glossy wood of the hardwood floor and ten fingers pressed lightly against the ivory keys of the piano in front of her. Raevan Purdy-thirteen and looking just like her father-was getting frustrated with her impromptu piano recital. It’s not what you think though-her brother, Ashley, was her half brother by their shared father and yet they looked almost identical. Glossy dark brown hair, although Ashley had enhanced his with redish streaks and his was more black, their almond shaped chocolate brown eyes could stare down anyone and of course they were both tan year round, thanks to their father.

Raevan had grown up with her mother in Las Vegas-her father had left them a few years ago which explained why she now had another half sister in Montana. But she loved her mother-they had had a good time together until she got sick and passed away over a year ago. That’s when Ashley had been called and much to her shock he had come straight away, leaving the current tour he was on with his band to get her settled in LA.

Now she called the guest room in his condo home and Raevan was just happy that Ashley had let her do with it what she wanted. Dark purple poster covered walls, a queen sized bed and a large television that doubled as her computer screen-it was much better than the trailer she had been sharing with her mother in the desert right outside of Las Vegas.

The only shitty part of it all was that Ashley was rarely home and Raevan often found herself alone. She had people coming in to check on her and Ashley had even offered to have her come out on the road with him, but Raevan was still unsure. She was still getting over losing her mother and the thought of not having a real home kind of made her feel insecure. She always felt insecure though and even though Raevan knew she wasn’t fat, she still covered herself up.

Teasing a twelve year old often will make them feel bad about themselves and even though she was now thirteen and growing in to herself, Raevan still felt the need to cover up. She often wore long jackets, skinny jeans and band t-shirts-covering her figure and making her seem boyish.


“Sounds like you’re getting good Rae.” Someone said from behind her and Raevan only smirked as she turned from the piano and faced her brother. Ashley was standing there in front of her, his tattooed arms crossed over his chest and his reddish black hair was hanging over a pair of tired eyes. He was home from tour since the guys were recording and they were all getting ready to head out to Virginia to stay with Andy and his wife.

“Thanks. What are you doing home? I thought you would be out with whoever you’re seeing these days…” She teased him and Ashley only smirked as he ran a hand through his hair and moved towards the plush black leather couch that was sitting in the middle of the room.

“Well, my little sister, we are going out tonight-you and me.” He said as he smiled at her and reached for a white bag that was laying over the back of the couch. She was facing him head on now, her brown hair hanging in her eyes and she could only look at the bag in his hands warily.

“O-okay…what’s in the bag?”She asked and Ashley only continued to smile at her as he held out the back towards her and Raevan placed it in her lap. She up zipped the front of it and could barely hold her gasp in as she looked down at the dress that was draped over her lap. It was a deep purple color with a sweetheart neckline and a lacey detail that if she looked close enough she could see that it made small skulls all over the skirt and bodice.

What was this for?

“Ash…I-I can’t take this. It must of cost you a fortune!” She said as she looked up and Raevan could see the tears in her brother’s eyes. Why was he looking at her like that?

“You’re worth it Rae. Now get dressed-we’re leaving in an hour.” He smiled at her as he came over and kissed the top of her head softly.


Raevan jumped up and ran off towards her room-she had an hour to shower, do her hair and get dressed. She managed to accomplish most of this in thirty minutes, but when it came time to put the dress on, she paused. It showed off her arms-actually it showed off most of her figure and Raevan didn’t know what to do. She had now figured out what was going on-Ashley had missed her birthday back in January because he had been out of town and now he was making up for it. But she didn’t know if she could wear this dress-it was too tight, it showed off too much and she wasn’t pretty enough to pull it off. Silently Raevan pulled on a cropped leather jacket and left her room, her heels clicking against the floor as she walked.


“You look beautiful. Are you ready to go?” Ashley was standing by the door, his own jacket slung over one shoulder and Raevan only smiled. Her brother was devastatingly handsome in his black slacks and white button up shirt with the vest-no wonder he always had girls hanging all over him.

“Yeah…where are we going again?” She asked as she pulled the jacket around her shoulders more and Ashley only looked at her. He moved behind her, his fingers brushing against her shoulders and soon enough she felt a thin chain fall against the skin of her neck.

“A small party-Happy Belated Birthday Raevan. I’m sorry I missed it back in January, but this should make up for it now. Why don’t you take your jacket off-it’s going to get hot in the car…” He was standing before her again and looking down in to her matching brown eyes.

“I-um…I’ll be fine.” She bit down on her lip as she walked forward, but Raven stopped walking as she felt Ashley reach out and grab for her arm. She spun around to face him and she noticed that there was a softness behind his brown eyes.

“I know what you think about yourself Raevan and I want to tell you that you’re dead wrong. You are beautiful, inside and out…you are a Purdy, after all.” He smirked at her and as she thought it over for a moment, Raevan did something she had never thought she would be able to do.


She took her jacket off and followed her brother out the door and headed to have the time of her life…
