Together Burning Bright

False Alarm

The girl standing in front of the mirror was happier on the outside than she was in. Odessa was dressed adorably in a cute sundress that showed off her belly with its empire waistline and wide lilac and white striped pattern. She was smiling, her blonde bangs hanging in front of her face and her bright green eyes were shadowed lightly in purple and her lips were glossy and red. She made the perfect vision of what a pregnant woman was supposed to look like-happy and glowing. Inside she was screaming, crying and shouting and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Andy had been gone for two days and while they spoke constantly, Dess couldn’t keep her sorrow from showing on her face. He was having a good time-they were playing their first show that night and he and the guys were getting in the studio to work on some things. They had just gotten off of the phone and it had left Dess happy, but her happiness soon faded as she looked around at their empty bedroom. There were people arriving downstairs-all of her friends were showing up for her baby shower, but Dess didn’t want to celebrate. She wanted to curl up in their bed, on Andy’s side, and not get out until Andy got home or she gave birth-whichever one happened first.

“Odessa Annemarie Montgomery-Biersack…get your ass down stairs!” Someone was calling to her and Dess only smirked as she tucked her hair behind her ears and turned towards the doorway.

“Hey Kit. Can I please just stay up here? I’m really not in the mood for this today…” Dess said, her voice sad as she looked at her best friend before her. Kit was dressed nicely in a short blue dress, her tattoos glinting in the sunlight that was coming in from the window.

“No and I don’t care-these people are here to see you and you have to get down there.” Kit said and Dess only sighed as she moved to her dressing table and slumped down into her plush black chair. She looked at everything on the table, sighing as her eyes scanned over pictures of Andy, she and Andy together and she even had Moira’s school picture there as well.

“Kit please…” She wasn’t looking at Kit now, but Dess was looking at the school picture of Moira that was hanging on her mirror.

What would her little sister think of all this? Andy had been the girl’s ultimate crush and she had always given Dess a hard time for taking him away from her. What would it have been like if Moira had been at their wedding? Did Moira know she was going to be an Aunt? All of these questions flew through her brain as Dess continued to look at her sister’s picture, her moss green eyes getting lost in Moira’s identical ones. Now Dess was crying for a whole new reason-she missed her sister. It had been two years since her passing and it still felt like yesterday to Dess.

She could remember holding Moira as she babbled on and on, saying her goodbyes and talking about how their father was in the room. It had scared Dess then, much as it did to think about it now, but there was no changing the past. Moira had died and so had her father-there was nothing Dess could do to change that fact. God she was such an emotional mess, but there was just a lot going on in that blonde head of hers. She missed Andy and wanted him home, but he couldn’t come home and she just needed to suck it up and accept that fact.

“Dessa-I know this is rough. He didn’t die though…Andy’s just out of town and will be back as soon as he can be. Now come on-your mother sent me up here to get you…I don’t think either one of us wants her to come up here herself.” Kit laughed as Dess’ eye grew wide and the two girls shared a smile in the mirror.

“No, no we don’t need that. So have you talked to your lover lately?” Dess asked, smirking as she stood up and faced her best friend. Kit’s face was suddenly as red as her hair and Dess knew that the girl was completely embarrassed by her new found love life.

“We spoke this morning. He’s been busy with his job and I’ve been busy with your pregnant ass so that doesn’t give us much time.” Kit laughed as she tossed an arm around Dess’ shoulders and the two girls began to head down the stairs.

“Are you ever going to tell me who this mystery man is? It’s not your ex Jay is it? Because that guy was such a douchecanoe…” Dess laughed as the two girls made their way down the stairs and everyone turned to look at the two of them. Dess blushed as her mother and Aunt Kitty both gave her disapproving looks from the kitchen table.

“No, it’s not Jay and soon…we’re both just trying to figure things out right now…” Kit hissed as she linked arms with Dess and the two girls walked into the kitchen where everyone was congregated.

All of her friends were here, including Morgan who had flown out from LA and Ella who was in from London where she had been staying with her parents. Dess walked around, hugging and laughing with her friends as they all touched her belly and gushed at how beautiful she looked. The room itself was gorgeous and Dess was in awe at what Kit had been able to pull together. The ceiling was laced with light pink and chocolate brown streamers, balloons of the same coloring were floating behind each chair. There was a delicious smelling catered lunch spread out on the counter top and Dess felt her stomach rumble. Everyone was so happy to see her and Dess finally found herself smiling, a genuine smile that wasn’t fake or plastered on.

Everyone mingled and laughed, but Dess couldn’t help feel like someone was missing. Andy of course wasn’t home, but he wouldn’t be here even if he was. No, someone else was missing and as Dess looked around she finally figured out who it was. Sammi was nowhere to be found and Dess suddenly felt sad. Everyone had pretty much picked sides in the whole Sammi-Jinxx breakup madness, but Dess and Andy both remained neutral.

It had made things on tour rather awkward with Jinxx for a few days, but everyone quickly got past it. Dess had hoped that Sammi would still keep in touch, but the only person from their group that still constantly heard from Sam was Ella. According to El, Sam was dating someone new and still living full time in Berlin. Dess was happy for her friend-she wanted everyone to find happiness and love in their life. She just wished that Sammi hadn’t shut her out since the last time they were in Germany.

“Did you get enough to eat Dess?” Kit asked from her right and Odessa only nodded her head as she looked up from her empty plate and smiled. Chicken, mashed potatoes, corn casserole-the meal had been delicious and something that Dess had been craving, but she couldn’t shake the sour taste that was in her mouth.

“Yeah. So what shall we do next?” Dess asked and everyone got very quiet as they all heard the front door open and close. Dess just figured it was Trish-who was coming home from school to see Dess-and so she only smiled until someone came up from behind her, placing their hands over her eyes.

“Guess who…” A voice whispered in her ear and Dess squealed-she knew that voice…she had missed that voice. The pregnant girl jumped up, throwing her arms around the neck of the person standing behind her and Dess felt the tears spring to her eyes as they hugged.

Sam! Oh my God I didn’t know you were coming!” Dess yelled as the two girls embraced and then pulled apart. Sammi looked good, her hair was red once again and she looked happier than Dess had seen her in a long time.

“I wasn’t planning on it but then I got a call from a certain singer, who reassured me that the coast was clear in Virginia and I caught the first flight out. Did I miss anything?” Sam asked and Dess only laughed as she grabbed the girl and the two of them walked over to where the food was sitting.

Everyone laughed as they ate and hung out, but Dess couldn’t stop from feeling slightly sad. She did miss Andy and now knowing that he had contacted Sammi to get her out here for Dess, made the pregnant girl miss him even more. After sitting around, Kit got everyone together and they began to play some baby shower games. Who could change a diaper the fastest-Aunt Kitty won that one. They all put in guesses for how much the baby was going to weigh and finally they ended it with a game where everyone guessed what Dess and Andy were going to name their daughter. Moira seemed to be the popular option, but Dess kept her mouth shut as she just sat by and watched.

They were all having a good time, but suddenly Dess wasn’t feeling so good. Her stomach hurt and thinking that it was just a stomach ache from eating too much, Dess decided to ignore it and turned to speak with Sammi. The girls were all laughing and joking around, when Dess suddenly felt her stomach lurch and she was up and headed towards the bathroom. Was this it? Was she going into labor?

Dess spent ten minutes in the bathroom, thinking that something was going to happen until finally she just gave up and headed back out to the party. Everything was beginning to wind down and Dess was thankful for everyone coming, but she was exhausted and ready for a nap. Kissing her mother goodbye, Dess returned to the kitchen where Sammi and Kit still remained, both girls laughing over something the other had said.

“You doing okay Dess?” Kit asked from her spot at the table and Dess only smiled as she sat down, wincing. There was a pain going across her stomach and she wasn’t sure what to do about it.

“Yeah, my stomach just hurts…” Dess said, as she rubbed her side. Kit’s eyes grew wide as she looked at her best friend. Her heart began to race-what if Dess went into labor? Andy was across the country and Kit wasn’t sure where exactly in LA he was in that moment.

“Like cramp pains?” Sammi asked as she placed a soft hand against Dess’ stomach and smiled as she felt a tiny kick.

“Yeah, my whole stomach keeps tightening up.” Dess said, sighing as she broke out in to a cold sweat. This couldn’t be happening-not here, not now. She was still a month from her due date-was the baby okay?

“Sam-get her coat.” Kit said, her voice strong and yet Dess could hear the panic behind her best friend’s words.

“No, no I’m fine.” Dess insisted, waving a hand but Sammi had her leather jacket in her hands and Kit was pulling Dess up out of her chair.

“Like Hell. I am NOT delivering your baby in this kitchen Dess. Let’s go.” Kit said as she wrapped an arm around Dess’ shoulders and the three girls headed out towards the car.

Odessa was almost positive this was not her going in to labor, but she wanted to be sure that the baby was okay none the less. What was going to happen if she was going in to labor? Andy was across the country right now and he very well couldn’t just drop all of his obligations to come back home. Dess watched as the scenery passed by and she suddenly felt the pain stop. It was nice, as the pain she was experiencing was irritating and made her sick to her stomach, but she was also worried. Was the baby okay?

Kit was driving at the speed of light while Sammi sat in the front seat, her phone in her hands as she desperately tried to get a hold of Andy or anyone who would know where he was. She got nothing and as the three girls pulled into the hospital parking lot, Sammi dialed the only person who she hadn’t tried and who she didn’t want to hear from. As the phone rang, Dess sighed from the back seat and both Kit and Sammi turned their heads to look.

She had a smile on her face and all three girls knew that this was probably just a false alarm, but better safe than sorry.

Notes

Is this it? Is this finally it?...probably not.

Anyone got any guesses for the baby's name? I'll give you a hint...it starts with 'A'.
