Hallucinations

Andy
Bill had drifted back to sleep and I took this time to get some food. My mom and Bill’s mom were sitting in the cafeteria with my dad and I had to hold back several snarls.

“Andrew, come sit over here.” My mother flagged me over and I hesitantly approached them. I sat down and my dad looked at me with this immense feeling of regret in his eyes.

“Where’s Tom?”

“He’s outside, smoking. I tried to help him quit but if I’m doing it to I look like such a hypocrite.” His mother sighed.

“I know what you mean; Andrew refuses to stop smoking those cancer sticks.”

“You smoke, son?”

“I have a severe stress problem that usually puts me in unnecessarily violent situations so I just smoke to prevent those situations from happening. One of those stressful situations just so happens to be you suddenly showing up in my life and I smoked a whole pack.” He sighed.

“So about Bill, how close are you two?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like once the trial is over he might have to move in with his mother and she lives an hour away from you guys, what if you never get to see him again? How would that affect you?”

“What are you getting at?” I asked. He chuckled.

“Nothing, excuse me.” He got up and left the cafeteria to quickly for my liking.

Bill
I heard the door open but the scent that followed wasn’t Andy’s usual smell of leather and cigarettes. I partially opened one of my eyes and saw his father pacing while talking on his phone.

“I’m in the room with the kid, he’s unconscious and my son is downstairs…yeah I’ll get both of them I just don’t know how…that could work…I just feel bad betraying him…okay, okay…I know just don’t cut me off I can’t work without it…hearing all those bastards talk about hurting kids and then working for one just so I can feed my habit…I understand…goodbye.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. What was he planning with me and Andy? I heard the door open and this time I smelled Andy.

“What are you doing in here?”

“I am just checking on Bill.”

“Get out!” Andy near-shouted. I heard the door open again and I was sure his dad was gone.

“Andy?” I opened my eyes and saw him standing there.

“Hey sleepy head, are you alright?”

“Now that you’re here I am.” I looked down at the sheets and sighed.

“Andy, I overheard your dad talking on the phone and I don’t like what I heard. He was talking about habits and working for one and getting both of us for something.”

“Seriously?”

“You believe me don’t you?” He just sighed.

“Bill, maybe you’re hallucinating. You just went through a traumatic experience and you imagined him saying that. My dad is anything but a person capable of plotting something.”

“How could you say that to me?! I am fully capable of deciphering fact from fiction. I am perfectly capable of figuring out whether or not I heard your father stand in this room and talk about something illegal. Why won’t you believe me?”

“Because sometimes when people go through that you went through you they tend to lose their touch with reality and suddenly they see plot in every little thing.”

“Andy, I think you should go.” I deadpanned.

“Bill, I was just stating my opinion.”

“It was nice hearing it but I still think you should go.”

“Fine, I’ll see you tomorrow when I come pick you up.” He went to kiss my cheek and I jerked my head away.

“You can’t seriously be mad.” I just crossed my arms across my chest and huffed.

“You know, forget it.” He left the room and I just scoffed. How dare he call me crazy?

Andy
Bill is such a drama queen, but that’s one of the many things I love about him. I lit up my cigarette and started walking back to my place.

“Hey Andrew.” I turned around and saw my dad jogging up to me.

“What do you want?” I snarled once he was in earshot.

“Look, I wanted to apologize for all the bad things I’ve done and maybe you and I could grab a sandwich and a cola at the diner?” I stared at the man before me and sighed. I promised I’d give him a chance.

“Okay.” He put his arm around me and I pushed him off.

“I don’t like being touched.”

“Right, sorry.” We walked to the diner and got a booth by the bar. I ordered a turkey club and a root beer and he got the same.

“I’m going to use the restroom, excuse me.”

“Sure, take your time.” I got up and went to go piss. After washing my hands and staring at my reflection for a few minutes I returned to my seat and he was already eating.

“This sandwich is amazing, you should try it.” I took a bit and it was good. I finished my meal and he kept staring. I suddenly felt really dizzy.

“I should get home. My mom might be worried.” I got up and staggered out the door.

“Here son, let me help you.” His voice sounded far away like I was hearing him talking from underwater. My knees gave out and I felt myself get shoved into a car and then I blacked out.
