The Reaper

Story Time

That night I stayed with Eve, even after I had placed her soul back into her body. I had cut down the rope, allowing her body the air it needed to survive. I watched as she slowly opened her eyes.

"Hello Eve. Do you remember me?" I asked, hoping she'd remember and realize that I was not a dream. Her eyes widened and she nodded. I couldn't help but smile. I crouched down and offered her my hand in order to help her up. She took it, and I set her down on her bed.

"P.... please don't leave?" She whispered through clenched teeth. She was still shaking- perhaps still frightened or cold. I looked down at my watch and sighed, knowing that more and more souls needed freeing. I decided that I'd free the trapped souls soon, but now was very important for the future of the humans- so I stayed. It was strange to be so close to an alive human that could see me, and it intrigued me a little.

"Mourner?" She asked, I turned and looked at her.

"Yes Human?" I replied, raising an eyebrow.

"If I'm left alone.... I.... I'm scared I'll try to..... you know.... again. Especially at school, or when my parents are home..." She whispered. I solemnly nodded, already expecting to stay with her. I decided that I'd have The Mystic conjure up a clone of my body so I could stay with her, and the souls would still be freed.

"I will not leave you unless I need to. However, I must warn you- I will leave you tonight after you have fallen asleep. I must meet with The Mystic as well as the rest of the Wild Ones." I explained. She yawned and nodded, then lay down in her bed. I pulled a blanket over her body and sat on the side of the bed.

"When will I get to meet the rest of the Wild Ones?"

"You already have dear." I replied. Her face lit up, then fell back again into confusion.

"No I haven't? I think I'd remember..." She muttered, still confused. I chuckled.

"Yes you have. Most of the things that happens in the human world stems from us. You know how you wear black, your dark makeup- all of the things that make you different... unique?" I asked, she nodded.

"That is the Deviant. He is the reason that there is a difference in people. He is the reason you like what you like, and hate what you hate. Without him your world would be pointless and dull."

"If... if he's the reason we like and don't like things.... why can't he make it so everyone likes me so I won't get bullied and picked on?" She asked and sniffed. I frowned and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Unfortunately, that is the price you must pay to have differences in your world. It comes with the good and the bad- but when you find a human that shares the likes and dislikes with you- it is magical." I explained. She nodded and sat up, hugging her knees to her chest. She became engrossed with my stories.

"What about the other ones?" She asked.

"The Destroyer is the one that causes natural disasters. Storms, fires, plagues, earthquakes, ect." I replied. She frowned.

"I thought you said The Wild Ones were good? That's not good!"

"Calm down child- he is good, I promise. You humans don't believe he is good, but he is. He does not use his powers unless good can come of it. You misunderstand. He destroys to make way for growth, renewal. He is the one that teaches you that you can be reborn from the ashes- without him you would not believe that life can come from death, creation from destruction, good from bad. He is the ying yang." I replied, she sat and thought for a while. She chewed her bottom lip as she took in all the words I threw at her, giving them meaning in her own mind.

"The others?" She whispered.

"The Mystic is the one that makes you believe in magic. He causes awe, wonder, amazement, curiosity, and sometimes he causes fear. He has amazing powers- powers even he does not fully understand. He's the magic man- the one with the spells, enchantments, incantations. He entertains- never ceasing to amaze everyone." I explained. She smiled as she understood and nodded.

"And the last one? The Prophet?" I sighed and flashed a smile at her. She was eager to learn about us.

"The Prophet is definitely someone who you've met. All humans have heard him at one point or another. He is the voice of hope- of reason. He is the one that causes you to believe in yourself, that you can do it. When you're lost and afraid, he's the voice in your head that's there to comfort you. Most humans chose to ignore him and he often goes unheard, but he is there, always willing to help. Always trying to get you to hope and believe. He knows you very well Eve, and perhaps it's your time to get to know him?" I whispered. She smiled and nodded. I was amazed at how quickly she understood.

"So... when do I get to meet them face to face?" She asked.

"Perhaps in the morning. For now, go to sleep. Once you've fallen asleep I must leave and meet with The Wild Ones. I will be here once you've woken up." I said, standing up and grabbing my scythe.

"Promise you'll come back?" She asked, holding out her pinky. I smiled gently at her and placed my pinky with hers.

"I promise."
